Can Spell Comanche

Can Spell Comanche (2/11)

  1. SVPete, thanks for the help, and the story! I've taken a peak at Cruisers tips & will do those & post my results, as well as check the vacuum line.
  2. Haven't even tried ac/heat honestly.. I'll see if it kicks on or not. Any thoughts on the no start? I know I should probably check fuel pressure... though if I keep the truck, I would just be replacing the tank & pump anyhow (came with new parts). I did replace the fuel filter just to see if it'd make any diff, no luck.
  3. I posted before with pics of my rusty floors.. besides that I'm battling a no start issue. Bought this truck with hope of fixing it up to make it a cheap DD..though it looks like I'm in for a lot more than I bargained for. lol When I first had it dropped off (had to be towed) it was running smoothly, then it sputtered/died & wouldn't restart. I could smell gas in the oil (i assume from cranking it so much), and the tank is fairly rusted/leaking. I changed the oil, put in a little fresh gas and tried again. The fuel pump primes (haven't checked fuel pressure though) and it's started a few times..run for a few seconds then died. Most of the time it just cranks but won't fire. Can the fuel pump be bad even though it's priming? I replaced the relay and it sounds louder when it does prime (was kind of a low hum before, now it's more pronounced). I checked for spark & all plugs are getting spark. It might be completely unrelated, but in looking over the wiring I noticed this disconnected. Any idea what it goes to? I know the orange/black is for the fuel pump.
  4. A co-worker of mine has a 2012 4cyl w/ fairly low mileage (20k something i think?) He seems to like it so far, aside from having a noise in the rear-end (fixed by dealer) and it already needs new brakes in the rear (welcome to the Northeast!).
  5. Not sure if it's a North Eastern chain or if they're nationwide, but all the old ladies up here go to Joanne Fabrics lol. I know they have a few different vinyls that would be similar to the seat material, not sure what color you're in the market for. A few years back on the Fullsize Chevy forum, I saw a guy that sewed custom door panel and seat upholstery inserts in his truck.. looked awesome! Is there no place local that sells fabric?
  6. I'd be more worried about using he ethanol gas than Synthetic oil. Had to replace the whole carb on my John Deere thanks to that crap.. so now I spend the extra $.0.40 and get the non-ethanol gas. It's pricey, but Amsoil has nice synthetic oil for small engines. X2 for the Mobil 1 in the truck though. Seems fine to me.
  7. Interesting.. thanks for the info! My father did body work for a living but I unfortunately never learned it, other than helping sand, so I've never welded anything before. Though maybe I will do like you said and just get it in place temporarily and have someone with experience weld it in.
  8. Like others have said, I would definitely call them & explain. The only bad experience I had was with a multi-function switch I ordered that arrived with the cover off & it never worked properly.. but I didn't bother to send it back in time so was out the $25 +/- (my fault.) Otherwise they're parts have been what I've expected & reasonably priced.
  9. Anytime I list something on Craigslist, I always state at the end "phone calls only, no texts/emails" Anyone that says they're out of the country, can't talk right now, wants to pay and pick up later, etc. is a scam. When I was 17, I almost Western Union'd $5000.00 for a 69 Camaro on eBay in mint condition, the owner claimed to be a construction worker on assignment in the UK. Just stick with common sense and have people meet you in person. & don't drive to them... some guy interested in my C-10 wanted me to drive 2 hr for him to look at it. Why?..so you can decide you don't want it & waste my gas/time? :) *shakes head*
  10. Thanks for the tip! & Youtube is wonderful for learning almost anything. If I'm thinking correctly, spot welding is where you drill holes and weld at those points? Thanks again for all the input guys; appreciate it!
  11. Haha, good point! I just hope I don't sink too much into a truck that's not worth it (stil contemplating selling it for parts).
  12. Thanks for the responses/sorry for the delay. I was in a minor car accident last weekend (someone backed into me at the gas station), so it was a hectic week. I've got a few leads on people who can weld (professionally) and are reasonable with pricing, so I'll probably go from there. Big Dan, thanks for the confidence boost! Did you practice on anything first (ie: scrap/junk metal) or just go to town with your floor pans? :)
  13. HI all! I'm a fairly new member/month long lurker. I bought a 90 Comanche (4.0/5 spd/2wd unfortunately) off a buddy from work for petty cheap to fix the mechanical stuff and use as a cheap daily driver. The body is pretty much shot, which doesn't bother me that much. As I told the guy, as long as the frame is solid I"m not worried. (It does appear to be.. there's surface rust but no cracks/holes that shouldn't be there) but after going to brush some surface rust off the floor board and pounding on it a bit I was able to put my hand through. Judging from what I see underneath and under the rubber flooring (as much as I could pull back) the rust goes up to the tunnel and then it's pretty clean. I was planning on have someone weld rockers and just grind the rest of the body rust off and re-coat it with rustoleum. I've never welded anything in my life, so wasn't planning on floors. I don't mind grinding away/cutting out the bad stuff, which appears to stock at the frame rail. A guy at the part store said he might be able to, he'd have to see it first. I'd had to just sell it for parts as it has fairly low miles (70k) but at the same time could be in for a nightmare. What are your guys/gals thoughts? thanks!
