a basic rule of thumb is anything behind the door jamb (interior and exterior) is completely specific to the MJ and will not (easily) interchange with a XJ or any other vehicle.

The Mounting of the XJ is quite different from our MJ's.

That was what I thought.

if you look up my build thread "Comanche Limited" youll see the custom mounts I made to mount an XJ rear bumper on my truck. It wasn't that hard to do, I'm sure they could be easily dupluicated by someone willing to do it.

You do realize Hanson actually builds a MJ specific bumper, right? Ready to bolt on and everything.

The Hanson MJ bumper is my favorite bumper for a MJ. It is expensive so I went with the JCR DIY and welded it together. It's not nearly as pretty as the Hanson, but for less than 1/2 price it was hard to beat. I don't like the box tube bumpers, so I was real limited on my options.

Yeah, saw the Hanson one but don't want to drop $1100 in a rear bumper at the moment

I can certainly understand that. Although, I am seeing it running $525 for a bare steel, and $550 powder coated from Hanson directly. Still spendy, but not $1,100 ;)

Would still be cheaper than an aftermarket XJ bumper and having somebody build sturdy brackets.

No tire carrier on that one. That was the reason the Hanson XJ bumper was linked to begin with.

Standard black metal bumper was ordered for mine from crosscanada body parts by the shop. Set me back about 190 cdn after taxes. It is rated 4000lb/500lb but I'm still looking for a separate hitch. Mounts did need to be fabricated for it as it is without them and primarily listed for a mid 90s Dakota. Otherwise looks quite stock and solid.

^^ sounds like the Fey bumper. Doesn't look factory at all if you know what the factory one looks like... I picked up a lightly beat MJ bumper for $30 at a wrecker. Matches the aesthetic of the truck at least...

If you're planning on towing you should look into Krusty's hitch. Check the vendors section.

Krusty's hitch is the way to go if you want to tow anything.  It is a VERY near duplicate of the factory approved Drawtite hitch and does not rely on factory bumper brackets that are not built or located to support towing much more than 2000 lbs. or a equalizing hitch.

Krusty is building a near stock like bumper for me.  Cost will be considerably less than $$ for Hanson.  But I think the Hanson bumper looks very nice - not sure if it is compatible with my Drawtite hitch. So that was a killer for me.

Fair statement. I do have a factory bumper but its starting to rot and previous owner welded it to the truck. This is the next closest option. Otherwise if looking for something offroadish its custom fab only at least in my neck of the woods.... been looking for a good one for about 6 years now :(

My brother gave me his DIY JRC bumper. He decided he did not want it after it was welded. So I got it and finished it out. And hopefully can get it mounted today. It looks sharp, but I'll need to come up with a license plate mount and a light for it as well...

There was no factory hitch for the MJs. Not listed in the Jeep parts manuals, they only show hitches for the Cherokee. And I don't think Jeep ever "approved" a Draw-Tite hitch. FWIW, every hitch I've seen for the MJ mounts to the same locations as the factory bumper brackets.

yeah, I never quite understood why there was never a "factory" equipped hitch or wiring. it was all aftermarket and wire splicing.

The lack of license plate provisions really kills a lot of the aftermarket bumpers for me.

I'm with mike, that's my biggest problem with the MJ bumpers. all the companies just take a XJ bumper and mod it a little.

I still use my truck as a truck its nice to have a step in the center, and its nice to have a legit space for the license plate with a light to keep the fuzz of my case.

I like Krustyballers plan combo his hitch and the HD built stock profile bumper= FTW

Probably because back then you were supposed to pull a trailer using your bumper. Hence the 3 holes in the stock one, one hole for each size ball or two for chains.

Remember, this tow hitch phenomenon is new for trucks. It used to be a car only ordeal.

valid, but still, no wiring provisions... I couldn't imagine taking (at the time/) my brand new truck and cutting the entire rear harness in half to put a trailer hookup

That was normal back then. Hell, a lot of states still didn't require trailer lights if you could see the truck lights above the trailer.
