Optional Ash Tray Light?

Recommended Posts

I read that an ashtray lamp is optional feature of our MJs and XJs. It's is tied to the dash illumination circuit and comes on with the parking lights. It can be dimmed by rotating the headlamp knob with the rest of the dash illumination lights. I don't have one of these and never knew it existed until recently. It's connector is supposed to be prewired in the dash harness and the actual bulb sits behind a hole on the left side of the ashtray cavity.

Anyone have one of these in their rig?

I have them on mine. I think I have an extra one, PM an address and it's yours, assuming I find it.

Thanks Mike but I just snagged one on Ebay. I keep a container of change in there and a lamp would be nice to have at night at the drive through. I've had quite a few XJs and don't remember any of them having it.

Hey Don, nice table! From what I remember, just pulling the knee panel is all that's required.

:rotfl2:   Ya, I like oak.  So the whole lower dash knee panel has to come out Mike? Figured as much. I had something else I needed to do in that area but I've forgotten what it was.   :hmm:

It should be two wires, one black one orange with a connector that fits this:

so that's what the bleu thing is on the xj harness. guess I got one too then.

Don't you know?  It's for the new Blu e- cigarettes!

Mike - got a PM from G who said there was no power on the harness connector on both his 92 MJ and 95 XJ, yet his 89MJ and 87 XJ did have power. So maybe this ashtray lamp feature was a Renix era thing only. I'll dig through my FSM wiring diagrams and see what I can find..........

Anyone have a 91 or later MJ/XJ that has a working ashtray lamp?

Those speakers were XJ only, the MJ harness does not have provisions for them but they're easy to splice in.

Wonder if it is the same issue with the ash tray lamp, XJ only?   Thanks for confirming that I need to splice in those speakers.  Thought I might just be missing the plugs or looking in the wrong place.

My MJ has the ash tray light connector.  If my 91 has it I suspect the earlier ones do too.  I say this because the earlier models were all wired for the cargo light, even if it wasn't optioned at the factory.  However, 91-92 are not.  I guess Chrysler was trying to save money?

Hmm explains why I had to run a wire and splice the dash switch harness when I installed one cargo lamp on my 91

I have these converter box things that I got out of a parts jeep that split the front speaker feed and give a tweeter output with a couple dipswitch settings

Are you saying you have the harness connector and your 91 does have a working ashtray light?
