Windshield Replacement

This week I had a new windsheild installed in my 1992 Eliminator Comanche. Mike's Auto glass in Montgomery AL. did a great job. They installed a new 1997+ Cherokee windshield that uses the rubber seal (One piece) that surrounds the glass and goes over the edge of the glass all the way around it. I like it better that way and it eliminates the black metal outside trim and clips. They did not have to cut off the posts that hold the clips on. It fit perfectly. I was very pleased with their work. Took about one hour while I watched them do it.  Rear view mirror mount is a little bit higher and I like that also.

I wish I had them put the trim on mine when they did it. 

 

Anyone buy and install the trim on their own?

I kept the bright trim when I had a windshield installed a few of years ago. It was a no-brainer for me. It's one of the little things that all MJs had originally that make it unique. And since it was chrome, there was no way I could replace it with an ugly rubber gasket around the glass.  :yes:

Nice, so if I want I can grind off those nail/posts/clips that surround the windshield part and still replace the windshield no problem? (Just without the trim of course.) any idea if that 97 Cherokee glass will work for my 86 Comanche?

Weird. My windshield channel was too "deep". When they went to install my windshield with the gasket the a pillars made the gasket flare almost straight up. Ended up ripping the gasket off and just rolling a bead of silicone around the edge to seal and fill the gap.it doesn't look 100% but from 5ft away it looks good. I HATED the metal trim. It trapped way too much debris behind it.

Just out of curiosity, how easy is it to find and remove the metal trim? I just had a windshield installed, but all my trim is missing.

It want hard to remove mine. Just kind of snapped off the clips. But finding would be just hit or miss on if you can find a per 92 XJMJ in the junkyard

You need a trim tool to remove it, search utube for trim removal, real easy to do, save all the plastic clips that you can, or get a few extras from another donor (or new) to make sure you have enough. If the nubs are still there, you can install the chrome trim.

And mikekaz1, If the channel is "too deep" on your Jeep, wonder why only on yours? Reality is that they screwed up your glass install. if the sealant bead was thick enough 3/8 to 1/2 an inch thick, then your glass would have fit perfect (nearly flush with the body metal) and the rubber garnish would fit proper and look good. This is true also for the chrome option, if the sealant 'bead" is not thick enough, the chrome trim will not fit tight and have gaps between it and the glass, making it look like crap. See my windshield install in the DIY, both front and back were done at one time or another.

Not all aftermarket glass is the same thickness either.

I half wish I would've had the rubber gasket put on the '91 when I had the windshield replaced a couple years ago. The dang chrome trim has a bunch of chips in it and other than the drip rails it's the only chrome on the entire truck.

Dunno. I watched the guy do it. He used the right caulk tip and what not. Who knows. There's always next time. Horray glass coverage
