88mjblue Posted January 4, 2015 Share Posted January 4, 2015 I need to replace my speedometer cable and after reading a few threads, I came up with these specs needed for my 88 4x4 w/o cruise control:- 96" in length (for 4x4) - one-piece from transfer case to speedometer back (cruise control models have two pieces) - metal connection for non cruise control (plastic clip for cruise control models) - two styles of mechanical speedometer cables (86-87, and 88-91) [in 92 cables went electric?] - automatic and manual transmissions take the same cable (depending on cruise or not) Can anybody confirm these stats, and please tell me where you bought your new one? (Somebody who bought one recently.) I read that advance auto parts used to sell this part, but I couldn't find it on their website, now they give me this cable when I put in my information: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/atp-speedometer-cable-y-802/5612799-P?searchTerm=speedometer+cable However, this one lists the length as 38"... Mine is an 88 4x4 with no cruise and had a plastic clip . Mine Even had the factory number stamped in the cable as it exited the firewall . ParadiseMJ Posted January 4, 2015 Share Posted January 4, 2015 My 88 MJ and 90 XJ have the same cable, except the XJ has a plastic clip to the cluster and the MJ has a screw on. I thought that was just a year thing. But the cable is the same length and the T/C end is the same. It has a white plastic clip at the speedometer, and a screw connector at the trans end. From my research I need the 96" cable when I go to 4wd. On the other side of the spreed sensor, a short cable threads on to it then goes to the back of the speedo. The ends for a long cable w/ cruise are different from the long cables w/o. Keyav8r Posted January 6, 2015 Share Posted January 6, 2015 That Mopar #04897729AA is available - from my garage. 76-3/4" length is probably right. I measured it by myself and it kept trying to curl up on me. It has the plastic clip end for the speedo. The two cables you posted links for look like they have the end for the metal clip with screw style connection at the speedo. The original speedo in my 88 had the connection for the plastic clip (the connector on the speedo had a groove around it for the clip to snap into). You may be able to get either end style to stay on your speedo by pushing it through the firewall grommet a little more to keep some pressure against the speedo connection. Let us know if the 96" cable length works or not. Seems like you would need a longer cable for 4WD. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
