neohic
I've decided that I hate living in MN! :D My wife and I have kicked around the idea of picking up and relocating to CO for a few years now and things are starting to look real. Not exactly looking to start loading up the truck tomorrow or anything, but we are looking to start aligning some stars. Currently, she has another year and a half of school to finish while I am trying to change jobs for something that I'm happy enough doing for now. I've worked in custom metal fabrication and welding education and she is currently working in a small accounting office while also going to school for accounting. We're both 28 so I would put us in the category of knowing what we want while still having plenty of time to accomplish things. Here's where we'd like to be: East of the mountains, but relatively close to them We'd like to build a permanent tiny house as it's just the two of us so somewhat secluded land is a plus Somewhat close to some kind of civilization (We live about ten miles out of town right now and that's about right... not too far... not too close.) Obviously we'll need jobs but she can do some kind of accounting just about anywhere (and hopefully get some good benefits) and I'd really like to get back into fabrication... Jeep/automotive is a huge plus I like simplicity. She likes having lots of options for things to do. For example, a few years ago we were in CO and went down to visit Jim in Pueblo. I loved that area! She preferred Denver down to the Springs area for the obvious reason of more people/options on activities. I've already PMed Jim about it and got some good advice from him. Did some more researching and pretty much set it in stone that eastern/south eastern CO is the kind of place that we'd like to be. So, by painting with very broad brush strokes, where should we go and what kind of cool job could I get there? We're probably a few years away from moving as she needs to finish her school and I'd honestly like at least one good year of not working on our house and just enjoying it. Thoughts? Opinions? Reasons not to go there either? 1... 2... 3... go!

shelbyluvv
Fountain is really nice. It is about 30-40 minutes north of Jim's place. Just outside of Co Springs also. If I was going to move to Colorado I would move to Fountain.

yellaheep
Lots of metal fab businesses in the central Denver, Adams County, Commerce City areas. Plenty of accounting jobs all over that area. You might want to look at areas in Brighton, Watkins.... Areas north and east of I-25 and I-70. My wife's employer, a German / US company called UFLOOR Systems which is just outside the east Denver industrial area (Aurora). She's the head of accounting and HR and is in need of expanding the accounting Dept in 2015. She'd love to chat with your wife about the career direction she's targeting and the experience she has and may need. PM me and we can get them in touch with each other. If not with UFLOOR my wife has a good network......

They have a reputation world wide for their quality of training Maybe they can use another instructor. Not sure if I want another education job after my current position. I used to really enjoy it but all too often I catch myself giving the "back in my day" speech on how none of them know how to work... that's only a difference of 10 years too! Not sure if I have the patience for it anymore. Lots of metal fab businesses in the central Denver, Adams County, Commerce City areas. Plenty of accounting jobs all over that area. Yes there are some more undesirable areas but you can't avoid that no matter where you go. Personally I'd stay north or west of Denver but that's just me. If you are looking south of Denver Fountain would be a good spot to start your search.
jimoshel
Personally I'd stay as far away from Northern Co, as I possibly could. Boulder, Greeley is a separate state, or should be, and is NOT at all a true representation of the rest of Colorado.
Comanche County
I worked at a pipe plant in Denver, lots of fab jobs. If the Keystone pipeline ever gets approved every steel pipe manufacturer in the country combined doing 24 hr operations won't be able to keep up with demand. neohic
Looking like somewhere between the Springs area and Denver... maybe even as close as the south western side of Denver. For what I'm looking for as far as work, the Denver area is the front runner. She seems excited about looking at culinary options in Denver. :shake: As far as other options, I've got some "issues" that the Denver area seems to be prominent in. Right now I drive 80 miles for a specialist... a drive I will not be okay with making when we relocate. Automotive fab shops seem to be more focused around Denver. Any good ones I should be looking more into?

neohic
Anyone know anything about Fessy Built? Buffalob had a bunch of work done by him but he hasn't been around CC in a while. Looks like a smallish shop?... maybe even a one man band type of place? Looks like a groovy shop.
dscowell
Don't know much about Fessy built but you could also look into Brucker Brothers and Skinny Fabrication.

Looks like a smallish shop?... maybe even a one man band type of place? Looks like a groovy shop. I don't think Fessy Built ever got back into business. I saw the stuff he built for Bob's truck and it was nice stuff but very shortly after that he got divorced and moved way out of the metro area. I tried to get Fessy to build me a set of those bed rail covers and he said he would love to but at that time, couldn't commit to taking on any business. Haven't seen anyone local get anything done by him since. And I really don't know what's up with Bob....... signs in every once in a while, but hasn't posted. Texted a couple times, no return. Hope all is ok.
neohic
Been looking around off and on at real estate sites trying not to get excited about things... then I found this today. :) http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/371-Raven-Dr_Idaho-Springs_CO_80452_M28153-72303?row=16 Been on and off the market for a while now. Maybe it'll still be available when the time comes to at least have a look at. :crossfingers:

Hard to tell which side of I-70 the property is on. North side (south facing) would help with snow melt off. South side (north facing) would leave all of the property in the shade all winter. dscowell
Quick google search of the address and it looks to be south of I-70. That is a very good point if you do get a house in the mountains that is something to keep in mind.

neohic
I lived in Colorado 10+ years, aint no way in hell...even if you paid me...would I live there again...too many people. Funny thing is that this is one of the biggest problems I have with where we are now is actually a lack of people... well, people in my age demographic. I'm in a retirement community. Some (Rob) might argue that this is the perfect place for me what with my lack of interest in most modern things. It was just a couple weeks ago that I finally gave in and got myself a smart phone! Don't get me wrong, I like hangin' with the older crowd... for the most part. But when it comes to really spending time with others and trying to make friends, this place has sure been lonely. Out in CO? Sure... I know that there is probably an older crowd as well. Tell you one thing though, I can think of at least one stand-up type of elderly gentleman that I'd like to make myself closer friends with! :D

neohic
Sure hope you have a genuine CO Comanche available for purchase when I get out there, Jim!... crooked fog lights or not... I'm not too picky on that. :D Getting back to the idea of finding a fun job out there, I came to the conclusion that it might be fun join a local 4x4 forum. Sure hope it doesn't interfere with spending a proper amount to time here. :shake:
