HOrnbrod Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 What a shame. :( http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/massive-sinkhole-swallows-vintage-corvettes-n28416
Pete M Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 well there's somethin' you don't see everyday... :(
earl*t Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Structural engineer? What about a geologist?
87Warrior Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 That is saddening :( Structural engineer? What about a geologist? :yeah that:
Spectormj Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 its sad to see that happen I like that place
AMCJeepMJ Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 They may have lost the 1 millionth Corvette, but they still have the only remaining example of an 83.
jimoshel Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 So what's the problem? Couldn't find any Fords to eat?
Keyav8r Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Structural engineer to determine if it would be safe to remove the rest of the cars and how much more of the building(s) may collapse. Geologist to determine why the sinkhole developed and if it will continue to grow.
92tanMJ Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Structural engineer? What about a geologist? One is one of my professors this semester. And here in KY sink holes are pretty dang common and basically there is a stipulation that says the ground is ever changing and we didnt find anything but that does mean that isnt something there or something could forum. And also one of the people that worked on the cite is on the board the musuem so if they sue theyll basically be suing themsevles. I actually was there this past fall. Quite a shame. Those were some beautiful cars in there. Busted water main? We've had LARGE amounts rain in the past year. It actaully has even changed the under ground water passage ways.
92tanMJ Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Back with more info. For those of you that have never been there, that area in the picture is cone shaped with a large circle room in the middle. So some 30 years ago when they build the museum they ran the HVAC underground to condition the room they dug an 8' by 6' trench for a 36" round duct, then back filled it with extra gravel. Well they also back filled around the outside base of the cone with gravel. So every time it rained the water would wash down the cone hit the gravel, weep down under the floor, and into the trench. Well apparently they believe there is a large water passage or cave or both far down below where they measured too. So the water was slowly taking soil away with it over the years down this holes that connect to the larger system. And we just got a large amount of rain this weekend..where the water level in the streams above ground are still high..so they believe that was the final straw for the ground and made it clasp inward. 4 of the cars are visible and the other 4 of the cars are buried under ground because theyre the ones that fell in first.
92tanMJ Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Here is the videos of the floor clasping Here is some the videos of the hole. It is MUCH larger than the opening that the fire department guesstimated it to be. In these videos you can see the the throats of the sink hole that lead down into the under ground water passage way. They were looking at the walls to see how stable the ground is...they took this video Wednesday. HOrnbrod Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Man, the price of Corvettes just went through the roof on Barrett - Jackson.
Automan2164 Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Would I be the only one that just isn't impressed with Corvettes? They just don't do anything for me. I can recollect very few that I stopped to inspect in my car shows and outings. Maybe one or two stand out. Rob
yellaheep Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I'm with ya Rob. I have plenty of respect for Corvettes but they're not my bag. I like the look of the 60's era cars but I've not driven a Vette that had me wanting one.
92tanMJ Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I honestly could care less about the vettes as well but the whole sinkhole fascinates me lol
gogmorgo Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 GM's planning on restoring the cars. Don't know they really had much choice in it though.
hassyfoto Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I'm not much for Vettes, never have like them, but, that is a real shame to loose some rare cars of any year or vintage.
HOrnbrod Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 I've only had one, a 1965 427 coupe. I loved that car, it looked good, was fun to drive, and went fast. But in 1968 when they changed the body style, I never really wanted another. It does pain me seeing any classic car, truck, or motorcycle get destroyed like that though. No matter what it is........
Pete M Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I don't think this one is going to get the full resto... :(
AMCJeepMJ Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I don't think this one is going to get the full resto... :( Wowee! Which one was that?
Keyav8r Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Drop the mallett, 'cause it's Hammer Time! Or That Mallett really got hammered! Or Hammer down! Were any of those close to what you were thinking, Jim?
