Babyblack86 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Followed up a reputable tip yesterday and found my White Whale. I did a little better than Ahab in capturing it. I'm still alive. I was asked not to divulge the sale price by the PO. Seems he was being inundated with offers and some were getting "edgy". A 1986 diesel Comanche X. Runs and drives. Sounds like an older Cummins when idling. The body is all there and the frame is solid. It's needing a driver side floor pan, rocker panels and bed repair at the wheel wells. Not sure where to start. My gut tells me to go over the motor first and then worry about the bling. Guess I'll start with a good cleaning and look for leaks and put a belt on the AC compressor to see what happens. Any suggestions?
Babyblack86 Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 I know the credo. It don't exist without pics! They are coming with a little help from a friend.
NHMJXJ Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Nuts ... Ty beat me to the quick. Couldn't post pics from work, but they'll be up tonight! Feel free to edit your replies ... BabyBlack asked me to upload his pics when he started the thread. My bad. You just wait, 'cause I've seen the pics and it's a nice ride!
Babyblack86 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for your help with the images. I'll put on a fresh pot of coffee when you are ready to grab a wrench, too! 8)
Babyblack86 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Ten inches of snow overnight. No progress today. Did find a 1985 Renault J repair manual on eBay this morning for 24.00. That will fill my head with probably just enough knowledge to really get me in trouble. Wondering how tough a rear main leak repair is on this thing.
88whitemanche Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Sick!!!! Total jealous factor here man! Good luck hope to see many more updates
Babyblack86 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Did anyone else see this on CL last week?
Babyblack86 Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Those who can read a VIN#, what's this one say? 1JTBL6576GT086883.

terrawombat Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Did anyone else see this on CL last week? Yes - was in Central NJ around Fort Dix. Messaged the guy, but he never got back to me. Was gonna buy it and store it at my parents place 30 min away, but never panned out. Glad it went to someone on here!
gogmorgo Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 That's a score... I really like the colour, too.
johnj92131 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Does anyone have a copy of the Craigslist post for this truck? Would be nice to read what the seller said about the truck. Picture looks good.
Automan2164 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I really... Really, really, reeeallly like the stance on your truck. The pics just didn't look the same though the email, but that height... Perfect... Do you know anything about the lift? Super interested in more. Let me know how it does on the highway with the oversized tires once you get it running tip top... I'm curious how the diesel would deal. As you know, I'm here to help in anyway I can... Rob
Babyblack86 Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 REALLY? The Arctic blast here still has me pinned down. It's parked right out my back window, so it's teasing me 24/7. The PO had tags on it and drove it all over Jersey. Says if feels like a 2.5 gas but with more low end grunt. I'll take some more pics as soon as I get under it to try and ID suspension it's sitting on. How can you tell which transfer case was used? I've read that Selectrac was available for the 86 4x4 MJ only then starting in 87 they just offered Commandtrac. Can't recall the NP2xxx? numbers off hand, but Selectrac has a viscous link between axels and Commandtrac has a solid link that rips apart on dry roads. I'm tracking down badging in my down time since most of it is missing including the Turbo Diesel gate emblem. My tail light pinching brother says he'll make a video to post when we get a battery back in it and get it idling. Until then I have to listen by memory!
Automan2164 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Don't have to wait to hear one run, just stroll through my youtube channel. T-case should be a NP207, which is Command trac. I don't think Selectrac was ever offered in an MJ. I still have an extra turbo diesel badge sitting here, as well as I know where a gold one is (not mine). I can verify on the 2.5 with grunt. I drive mine all over during the summer and take it to shows. Usually getting 30+ MPG. Most people don't give it a second look, but it's fun messing with the Jeep guys. They will usually walk past, and almost break their necks doing a double take once they get a glimpse of the engine bay. I'm curious how the diesel would act with a taller tire and some more rolling resistance. I would like a taller tire to make up for those 4.10 gears... The thing screams at 60 MPH. Be nice to take some revs out on the top end. Rob
Babyblack86 Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 That's your video? Saw it. Kicks @$$. Ill PM you later about that emblem horse trading. I saw the gold TD badge but I really don't want go in that direction. After browsing all Jeep designations last night I searched for Renault emblems. At the very end, up pops chrome 2.1T ( for turbo) badges in the correct font and size. I ordered them both! I can already picture guys trying to figure out a 2.1T emblem rather than the standard 2.5, 2.8 or 4.0! Parking lot fun at its best.
Automan2164 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The Renault designation for the 2.1L in our trucks and the Winnie is the J8S . Add that to your eBay search to bring up parts without going through 600 ads. Rob

Be nice to take some revs out on the top end. Rob Selectrac was available in MJs in '86 only. Someone else on here has one. Also it was only available with automatic. If it's last '86 it's possibly NP231 but unlikely. Did they use the AX4/5 or BA 10/5 with the diesel? If it was mine, I would switch to a 21 spline AW4 (if that's what the trans is) or get a Jeep NP208 and swap in a 21 spline gear. They were built for V8 power and have 2.72 low range.

There should be a tag on the back ID'ing the case. The motor was also used in Mini Winnebago Le Sharos. If you crawl under, make sure the starter isn't coming loose and the rear brace for the starter is attached or it WILL snap the mounting ear off the trans!
