Zebvance
So I need a tool box in the mj to hold extra parts, tools ext. However I do not want one of the tradional ones that sit in the back of the bed. I have a fishing pole rack that I have rigged up there and It works good. I have seen the fender well tool boxes and I was wondering if anybody has had experiance with putting them in a mj. The ones I have looked at seem to be to big. I would like it to not stick up past the bed line. I would ever pefer on that sits in the wheel well on the passanger side between the rear window and wheel, but have found nothing like this. Any way just looking to get some input on it. If I can't find exactly what I want I will probably just build one. not sure how I would do the lid though. Wish I had a sheet metal bender.... Here are some picture to get a better idea of what I'm talking about. fishing rack Tool box style that I think would work good. But I want one in this spot. or the full length of the bed. kolton
Why not incorporate your rod rack into a traditional tool box? I've seen some of the wheel well boxes in an MJ. They were plastic and lacked a lot of storage space. It was almost just enough room for weather gear, 4 boxes of shells, and 2 shotguns. Not much room after that. 92tanMJ
You need short bed (pup truck) saddle boxes. I have full size saddle boxes in mine and theyre great, I love them. The pup truck ones are so you can put a normal tool box across the bed, which IMO I think would work out good with your pole rack Image Not Found Image Not Found
Zebvance
I'm not a big fan of those. I was looking for something more low profile.
GirsMJ86
I've never looked into anything except the traditional style, but maybe something for an older Dakota would work. As far as putting them in front of the wheel well, if you found the right size those style can go in front or behind the wheel wells, you just flip flop the side they would be on if they were behind (passenger on the driver side and vice versa). Anything meant for a full size truck would stick up too far I would think. If you build one doing the lid would be easy enough. The lid just uses a large hinge and has an inch of so that overlaps a raised lip all the way around the box. Basically you'd build the box with a removable lid, then add a hinge. Doing a quick search I found the box you show above that is listed as for the MJ. Could be where you found your image. HERE There are also THESE and THESE. Comparing measurements would be the only way to see if they would fit.
Ronnie
I bought one of these at WalMart for $32. It has a built in lock and you can add additional pad locks if needed. I mounted it in the bed w/ two stainless bolts an lock nuts - not tighten all the way down. I cut a channel in the bottom of the box for each bolt to ride in so I can slide it up tight against the bed or slide it out for full access. The dimensions are around 32" long x 13" wide x 15" deep. I haul a mountain bike so I couldn't fit a regular tool box in the bed. This allows for easy removal if needed.
GHayduke
I have a craftsman one that sat behind the wheel well, but it was just a tool box. Literally with a rear door and small pull out tool drawers so not much else would fit in it. I use a bed side box as a mini cross box in my full size truck & it works well. just ideas. 86FUBAR
I used 20 mil ammo cans at the back of my manch ! I bolted them down and welded a piece of chain link that I cut in half to the box so it protruded through the folding handle of the box on either side and bought a 4 pack of matching locks, and that freed up a lot of room in my larger main center box up against the cab! The only problem now is I have trouble remembering where everything is .

Zebvance
I guess I should update this. I ended up finding a deal on a good tool box on craigslist that I just couldn't pass up. It wasn't what I wanted but It does the job, I was able to incorporate my fishing pole holders on it too.

GHayduke
I'm considering going to a trailer tongue box to clear enough space to run roll bars and a tool box at the same time. I have a nice Dee Zee box that just fits right now. Image Not Found
benjy_26
I run a polymer unit from Tractor Supply. It was under a hundred box, fits a ton of stuff, and has enough room for stuff to fit on either side of it.
BryceOJ
I have a traditional style toolbox and the amount of storage that it has is just great to have. I have plenty of tools equipment and has plenty more room for anything else. It comes in handy when you have a passenger you have bags and what not. I fish a lot too and I love you rod rack. I definitely will be trying make something work with my tool box. I'll send pics of mine tomorrow for you.
