Just paid $59 to put new tabs on my manche... seems really steep to me. Maybe it was because they're expired?  :dunno: What's everyone else paying for their tabs?

If you mean tags, it varies by state.  You could also have a late fee if you renew after they've expired.

 

I was was paying $75($90 for personalized) in Wisconsin.  Here in Missouri, it's $27.50.

I'm paying ~$55 each year for the Purple People Eater. Last year I paid ~$27 for Wilbur and doesn't need to be renewed until 2051.

WI has collector plates, I believe Brent paid $200 for them, and they never need to be renewed.  I think the only restrictions are no towing, no more than 500lbs in the bed, and can't drive it in January.

Here in Ohio any car 25 years or older can be plated as a "historical vehicle". Only rule is you can't use it as a daily driver.

 

So when I go off road: club event

Drive it to the shop: to work on it.

Gas station: obvious.

Grocery store: need to drive it 'cause it's been sitting too long.

 

All valid reasons to drive it.

 

Can't run them on the PPE, though. After watching me go by the same spot around the same time 5 days a week, police would probably be questioning the purpose of me driving it.

One of the (few) nice things about living in Maryland is that I can grab "Historic" plates for vehicles 20 years and older.  It will make the vehicle exempt from the emissions/safety inspection and it will drop the 2-year registration fee down from about $150 to $50.  It comes with all sorts of limitations, but everyone around here does it and the cops don't seem to care - must not be a heavy enough fine for them to make it worthwhile to pull you over.

there are a few restrictions over here. mainly saying it has to be restored to factory condition and you must have to have another DD vehicle since you can't drive it all the time. they still give the plates to anyone without asking any questions though. the fine is 100 bucks and you loose the plate if they get you DDing it or it not being stock. Ive never heard of anyone i know loosing it

Old topic, but I just got my tag notices and both MJs (88 & 91) are $29.80. When I registered the 91 in June I paid the title transfer fee, the AL sales taxes, etc. and that was around $90.00. I've had the 88 over a year, but don't remember the cost of getting it registered. both were out of state titles. I hope the future tag renewals will stay in that $29 range, but I should have only the 91 when they come due again.

Just bought a jetski and trailer and had to laugh about the titling and registration fees.  In Maryland boats are handled by an entirely different department (the Department of natural resources) than automobiles/trucks/trailers/motorcycles.

 

Since the jetski/trailer were a package deal we had to split the costs up for the bill of sale for each.  We estimated the value of the trailer at $125 (it needs a lot of work) and the jetski at $3100.

 

Costs for titling the trailer: $100

Costs for registering the trailer: $51

6% Sales tax for trailer: $19.20 (MD taxes you on $320 if the vehicle value is below that)
Total costs for titling/registering trailer: $170.20

(I also paid a $50 office fee for doing it at a third-party place next to my office.  Won't take that into consideration since I could have gone to a regular office and paid nothing)

 

So I wound up paying more for the titling and registration fees than I did for the trailer.

 

Now, for the jetski, which is under an entirely different department.

 

Costs for titling the jetski: $2 (2 whole dollars!)

Costs for registering the jetski: $24

5% Sales tax: $155 (don't know why the DNR charges 1% under the state sales tax, but I'm not complaining)

Total costs for titling/registering jetski: $181

 

The fact that they only charge $2 for a title is absurd especially when you consider that they have someone who will need to type up the new title in my name and mail it to me.  That certainly has to cost the department more than 2 bucks...

 

I would challenge that the Maryland Motor Vehicle Commission is one of the most expensive in the US.

On a side topic, Ohio is trying to move to a single license plate, saving the state $1.3M annually. The House is supposed to vote on it some time after they return from summer recess (which can be anywhere between mid September and Early October).

lol! my mom still pays my registration for my manch !  and I get to her here bug me every 2 years to go down to the dmv and put that "thing" in my name since I don't technically own it ( yes she gets paid back...eventually.... as its become a bit of a joke around my family) . Anyhow it cost $104 to register a truck that might get a 200 miles a year put on it , it used to be a heck of a lot cheaper but someone went and changed that.

The "single plate savings" claim for Ohio is smoke and mirrors. As the state charges the consumer for the hard plates so there is no additional charge to the state for making & processing two plates. $47.50 a year but I will probably go historic next time.
