Emergency/parking Brake Cable (Front)

I have a 1989 shortbed, and the E-brake cable has snapped. It's snapped in the front, almost right where it connects to the pedal. It is still clamped in place by something so i can't just pull it out from the equalizer side. i looked in my manual for the MJ and all it had was the procedure to do the rear part. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to buy a new front end cable for the shortbed. Napa has a good quality one that I've installed. You need to lift up your carpet between the e-brake and the access hole at the rear of the cab. The cable is held down in a couple places. It's not difficult but be sure to adjust the tension properly at the equalizes once you have it in place.

The ebrake cable is bolted to the floor of the MJ and routed under the drivers seat under the carpet. The Ebrake mechanism is sort of a booger to get out if you have to work around the seat. If you have a few hours available, remove the drivers seat (or bench) pull the carpet, check for rust. The cable may be repairable, but if its all rusty the cable sleeve will be toast. I'd go with Remi's idea if it looks ugly under there.

Mine was broken when I got it. Advance and Autozone couldn't get me the right one, but CarQuest got the right one on the second try. I was about to say that I might still have it and could send it to you, but I remember I actually kept it when I did the '97 conversion. I found it easier to remove from the assembly if you just remove the assembly from the cab. It isn't necessary, but it helped me.

SORT of? Thats the understatement of the century right there, removing the cable from the bracket is a total B***H. I had the bracket completely out of the truck and it took me 45min to get it free. :laughin: The problem is that the little taps that keep it in place are spring steel (you can just fold them over) and pretty darn stout to boot.

I just replaced mine for the 7'. NAPA had it...in stock! They also list the 6' as an in stock item.

 

Replacing the cable wasn't hard. Stripping the interior - remove the drivers seat, remove interior trim panels and lift up carpet - was time consuming. The old cable came off of the pedal mechanism easily, but I could have used a 3rd hand.

 

I had to cut the cable at the adjuster screw. The screw was so corroded I had cut the screw also to get the adjustment nuts off. The replacement cable did not come the nuts, so be sure not to throw those away. Or buy replacements.

I previously removed the carpet and now there is a layer of rubber in the way. do i need to cut up the rubber or is it just tucked underneath the plastic trim pieces? and if so, is it possible to remove it without damaging it?

Also, is there anything other than the rubber stopper that holds it once it is up by the pedal? it broke about a half an inch away from the pedal, and i got the small piece out of the pedal assembly, but there is still broken wire visible right there at the pedal.

I also found that the small arm near the equalizer (brake line supposed to be connected for extra pressure) is completely detached.

i would take a picture to explain it better but i am without a camera at the moment.

Use a 13mm wrench to compress the tabs and it slides right out.

 

 

 

I replaced the two rear cables last night, went to step on the brake to test and the front broke.......talk about bad luck or no luck......

 

 

So, tomorrow the front gets replaced.

 

I ordered three front cables from three different stores, all have different stated cable lengths for the short box...........go figure......maybe one will be right.

The two rear ebrake cables are the same for SWB / LWB; the bed length difference is made up in the front cable. The SWB cable factory p/n is 52003192. Rockauto has four vendors to choose from; do a p/n search on their site.

Fits perfectly and I see no difference in quality over the Raybestos that I ordered from Rockauto for the rear.

 

Slice the body plug down the middle to reuse on the new cable and use Dawn dish soap to reinsert.

 

 

What an absolute PITA.
