A big reason why I want one is that i find them very comfortable.

I grew up with one of these. " my mom had one"

Gas mileage isnt thaat bad.

And IF I had one, this what I would want to do to it.

Mall crawler/snowboarding season

Reason why I want a 2nd vehicle is because I'm about to start a new job.

That means my 1990 Eliminator will be getting some well deserved TLC plus a 6.5" lift :D and I would still need to get to my job.

Ya know?

They are asking a lot for it way too much IMO.

They also don't say what lift, what axles,or if its been regeared for those 35s

Its a RC lift kit. and I emailed them about more details.

But do you guys think a lifted ZJ would be good #2 vehicle? reliable? any idea?

ZJs go for around $1200 to $1600 all day long.

So figure what the goodies are worth to ya.

That's the way I'd look at it.

XJs have resale value.

Apples to oranges? No.

The guy wants to trade and he knows what he wants and it's more expensive than what he has to trade so he jacks up the price.........I never deal with 'traders', they are the worst.

Other than the fact that the seller soaked a bunch of money into it that he's desperate to recover.........it's still a $1200 ZJ.

EDIT:

If you want a second car, one strictly for transportation, then look for a $1000 4cyl that's good on gas and gets you around. Or if you are patient you'll find a good $1000 XJ that you can clean up and sale in a few months and make $600 or so on it.

Leave the goo goo eyes for cool crap at home and use the $4000 on the MJ.

Just trying to help..........I have wasted more money in my life doing stupid crap.........I just can't' tell you how much.

But I learned my lesson.

Absolutely not.

Get an XJ -- stock, not lifted. The ZJ was originally intended to be the next generation of the XJ, so it really doesn't offer much more interior space or better anything. Overall, it's inferior to the XJ in any way you can think of.

I wasn't going to comment as asking for other's opinions on "what should I do" or "should I buy this", etc etc. is something only you can decide for yourself based on your own research.

But I agree with all the above. A lifted ZJ is probably one of the worst choices as to what you are looking for, especially at that price.

And this isn't MJ Tech - moved.........

Alright, you guys changed my mind.

How can tell if they are stock axles Pete?

This is all the nice XJ's I can find with in 5 min on craigslist.

Now, I'm not trying to be mean spirited, or get you down or anything, but I seriously think you're asking for trouble man. That $4800 you spend on this hacked up, although nice looking for what it is XJ, could buy you at least 2 XJ's, and you'd still have probably $2500 to spend on the MJ.

Like Ismurphy said. Don't waste your money on "cool looking crap" just because it has big tires, a lift, and some off road lights. You'd be wasting the money you could be putting towards the MJ in gas just to get to work and back!

I would agree with the above statements. Ive owned three ZJ's and that one just appears to be thrown together. Not to mention the 6.5" SA lift, which is likely a 4" RC lift with 2" BB on top of that. Its going to ride horrible, theres no way around it. Front fenders are hacked up to fit the tires, instead of it being done properly. Really, not being shallow here but when looking at a vehicle as such you have to wonder what else did they half @$$ that people can't see? Just being objective is all. I would not hesitate to buy another ZJ any day of the week, its actually my favorite Jeep ive ever owned, but I would not waste my money on someone's headache. Even the vehicles hes looking for in trade are just sky high rides with nothing behind the looks. Pass!

There's a red XJ just up for sale a bit down the road form where I work on 321 in Hudson area (between Hickory and Lenoir). It's 4wd and red is all I can tell you about it aside that it's on the left hand side of the road (going North) just past the CVS stoplight, I think the place is called Crazy Mike's, there's mowers and camper tops there all the time, this is the first vehicle I've seen out there. If you're interested I could go by and get the number for you.

If youre looking for a reliable daily driver, you need to buy something that you won't want to modify. My first reliable daily driver I bought 12-13 years ago and still have it, and would still not be afraid to drive it anywhere on a moments notice. Its a base model 97 Hyundai Accent. Theres not much to it, and nothing avilable if I wanted to.... thats good because I too have had the bug to modify everything I had up to that point. Keep your project as a project and keep your daily as a daily and all will be happy.

my room mate had an 2001 ish Audi A4 1.8t... I did all the work on it. the oil change was a pain in the rear. had to remove the radiator bottle to get to the oil filter. the battery is in a odd place as well. I am pretty sure the owners before him wore the hell out of that poor car, but not long after he got it is started to sound and run bad. it did not have much power and only got up to 20 MPG if i remember correctly. the CV boots are one of those things that wears out fast and if it breaks and you loose all the grease, then you would need to replace that CV shaft and bearing. that was one of those things that we had to fix as well. another issue his car and similar years had was the heat from the turbo would burn out one of the Coil packs, it got to the point he was buying another one every other month or so at 90 dollars a pop.

some of the good things is it has a huge trunk we where able to fold down the rear seats and fit a 60" tv in the trunk. I also liked how the lug nuts where for the car, but that may just be me...

not trying to down all of those cars just my personal experience with that Line of cars

I like my Toyota Yaris 5 spd hatchback pretty good, I deliver pizzas so need a DD that's very fuel efficient, I average 40 MPG and am now at 98,500 miles. It's not the funnest car in the world to drive but it's reliable, safe and efficient. Mods are limited to stickers and vent guards.

:agree:

Just about any Toyota, with the exception of a Supra, will work good as a DD. Lame 4cyl with little power and no true aftermarket following.

I look at my wifes 02 Camry with 170k miles and at my 86 MJ with 165k miles. I wouldn't hesitate to drive the Camry across the country tonight. The MJ needs a lot of work for such an adventure and the Camry is 99% factory...(only belt, fluid, battery, tires and alternator have been replaced). While I hate what Toyota has done to the image/perception of what a vehicle is, they make solid cars.
