Which do you prefer? Manual or Auto?

Simple question. I know there are a lot of guys in the 4x4 community who swear by both. Which do you prefer? I understand the beauty of automatic when wheeling, but I prefer a manual vehicle every time. Haha

I would normally agree on the DD manual but in So. Cal. the typical speed in rush hour is around 5-10 mph. If you like shifting between 1st and 2nd gear about a thousand times, then manual is fine. I got the auto 88 just for commuting.

I have an Auto WK for DD and Manual MJ for weekend driver

Converted the Family Truck to manual earlier this year.

I agree its easier to wheel/launch with an auto, but it's called a man pedal for a reason. :rotf:

I like them both, but prefer manual... Even when wheeling, unless the line requires a slower crawl speed than my TJ with 4:1 low and 5.13 gears. After driving my buddies rig with an auto, I would never build a wheeling rig with an auto.... Granted I am not a hard core crawler.

 

I did decide to build my MJ with the AW4.

I prefer a manual transmission over an automatic for road driving, but off road I'll take an automatic any day.

Manual. I like having more control. Easier to change the fluid also.

 

Also don't have to worry about any of my friends driving "The Jeep Truck" as they call it. Only like two can (kinda) drive a stick....

Auto is the way to go, who wants to shift all daylong? Also auto when wheeling who would want to change out there clutch every year

If you know how to use a clutch off road, you won't need to change it every year. Main reason I don't like it off road is that I only have two feet and three pedals. Hand throttle would help a lot.

 

I have also witnessed too many problems with rigs getting mud in the clutch.

they both have there place in ones driveway :brows: me i like the the manual option which was a standard when i bought my in 89 which changed now as the manual is an option. i hope to have an auto sometime :brows: in the not so near future :( but maybe its because i am set in my ways :cheers:

That's an insult to sardines! I will move from here as soon as I can but retirement is a few more months away. I envy all you guys who get to live in beautiful , uncrowded areas.

Auto for wheeling unless you got 4:1 t-case gears, which makes it pretty easy to drive without restarting the jeep 12 times a hour.

 

I like manuals for everything else. Granted I only have one truck thats running and driving with a manual trans currently. She will not drive it with a manual :yes:

i like shifting for daily use, don't deal with to much rush hour, but also have an auto daily driver but it normally sits. For offroading i will only do automatic unless its deep water or mud.

I want to shift, all day, every day. I want a manual in my DD, my truck, my minivan if I could. I don't care a bit if the auto is easier of better in any particular situation. I still want a clutch pedal.

I love having a standard, and having taken both off road, if you know what your doing I don't see much different between them, but then again, I drove a standard for the first 10 years driving. I only have an auto now for my DD because it gets better gas milage then a stick in the same car.

I go through phases. I'm in my automatic phase right now, but I'm starting to tire of it and I want my manual MJ back. I always feel like I'm in better control of the vehicle with a manual, but I love the convenience of the auto.

i agree! if i ever drive an auto, i go to push in the "clutch" which is acxtually the brakes... not good

My sister cherokee is so much like my mj that I always reach for the shifter. Or I try to put it in gear and hit the wipers. :doh:

Wanted to add that my mom CANNOT drive auto. She is a native of Germany, and has not owned an automatic car. Ever. Once she had to take her Cavalier into the dealer to get it serviced, so they gave her the keys to an auto loaner. She was in tears in the parking lot because she couldn't even figure out how to get it out of park. It took a salesman to come out and show her that you had to depress the brake to move the shifter.

 

Just this summer she was car shopping, and she wanted to take a Honda Fit for a test drive. Surprisingly, out of a fleet of 50 some cars, they had not one manual transmission. He asked if she wanted to take out an auto, and although she advised him no, did anyway. he said that out of the 7 or so years he had been selling cars, it was the only time he was legitimately scared on a test drive. She kept hitting the brake, jerking the wheel, and shifting the car out of drive.

 

Thank god her senses came to her, and she's now representing the Motherland.
