aemsee
Been an interesting year. After slaving as a dealership tech for 20+ years I got a job teaching for Chrysler in 07. Got laid off Dec 08. Hired back on Feb 09. Found out in April that all the training centers were closing, some moving to college campus'. Some just closing. Ours was on the just close list. Found out yesterday that they found us a home at a college, but only keeping one instructor. Well, I got the position, but the catch is that the new location is 1 1/2 hours away. At least they provide the vehicles to drive, and cover half of the fuel costs. How long of a commute do you guys have? I did an hour + ten for two years. Didn't really mind it at all, but I was 20 years younger. (Wildman, it isn't ECC, they found a spot at SUNY Morrisville)
fiatslug87
Currently 7.5 miles for the last 7 years Before that: 58 miles for 2 years 65 miles for 3 years :ack: this was the worst, not just distance but constant heavy, heavy traffic 52 miles for 4 years 28 miles for 2 years 57 miles for 3 years All one way in heavy San Francisco Bay Area commute traffic :fs1: But hang in there, at least they give you a car and a fuel subsidy. Throttle_Jockey
I used to drive 48 miles one way 6 day's a week and 24 miles of it was a bridge across lake ponchatrain. I now drive 209 miles one way to work and a 30 mile round trip from the shop to the bunk house for 14 day's.
Automan2164
10.5 miles each way. Girlfrend does 40 each way. No thanks. Drove about 60 each way to tech school for 2 years. Thank god thats over. Rob L.
Pete M
I did a 3 hour round trip for a year (10+ hour days, 6 days a week). Was the first year with my MJ and we did a lot of miles together. :D I can't see myself doing that again. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if I only worked a 40 hr schedule. :dunno:
aemsee
A big plus is that I am basically my own boss. My supervisor is in NYC (6 hrs away), and he is usually headed home by 3:30. I should be out the door most days btwn 3:30 and 4.
whowey
I've only got a 10 minute drive now... But I did a hour and 20 minutes for 2 years...I payed my own fuel, tolls and car expenses. Had to own a Jap crap box to make it work... VERY glad I don't have that job anymore.....
glundblad
A couple of years ago, my commute was right at an hour. It is a big deal for a few weeks. Then you adjust to it and hardly notice. Just make sure you have a nice cd collection. I had to buy my own fuel but I had a diesel Jetta. I was getting 43mpg.
jeepdoggydogB
currently and the last 9 years 20 miles each way against the commute Before 11 years 5 miles 2 years 70 miles each way that really sucked but it was in 1987-89 traffic was much lighter. I could drive a different one every week, or day for that matter. And they all have Sirius satellite radio.
mnkyboy
Till i got layed off i was driving about 20miles each way which wouldnt be bad except Portland traffic is terrible. and traffic seemed even worse on the days i rode my motorcycle to work :headpop: the worst part is the job i quit for that one is 4miles away and those guys are still working
NWPhotog
At one point I was commuting 45 miles from Oregon City to Salem. 2 months of that and I was looking for new job. Even 20 miles to Beaverton was a pain. I was very glad to get laid off and start working from home. Now my commute is 30 feet! :D PS The Oregonian reported today that Portland commuters only waste 36 hours vs the former 37 hours a year thanks to mass transit! (nation wide average is suppose to be 33)
mnkyboy
Beaverton sucks for traffic, hwy26 is a nightmare. Oregon city to salem would suck too. my wife was driving from Clackamas to Aurora and that was too far. I'm hoping i can find a job a little closer to home,I found a job with waste management in Hillsborro as a SR technician but then i got to thinking, Do i really want to drive from Clackamas to Hillsborro to work on garbage trucks and loaders. DirtyComanche
I do about 14Km each way. Pretty much nothing... I might change that to 50Km each way. Which would be all highway, not even a traffic light (but there is one bridge, which is about 30' long, and never causes real delays).
BLHTAZ
Starting tomorrow, I will officially be a working man again, and my commute is 13 miles which takes about 20-25 minutes. Congrats on still being employed Joe

Sir Sam
Are there any diesel engines that will need to be cleaned out of the old place before everyone gets the boot? Got any spare VMs around you could rob some parts off of?

Myron
I drive anywhere from 5 to 650 miles to work. Travel across the country doing heat treatment for powerplants, oil refineries, and occassionally paper mills (Never go to a paper mill, they stink like s***) At least boss pays for gas now. :D
