  1. My current Dana 30 in my '86 has a bent axle housing, making it impossible to get my axle shafts back in after I was replacing a seal. Anyways, tomorrow I'm headed to the junkyard to pull a Dana 30 off a '98 Cherokee. I can't think of any major problems with doing this swap, but wanted to double check and get input from everyone on here, as I know there are probably many that have done something similar or know things I don't. I will most likely be using my original carrier with a new locker so that my gearing matches. Anyways, as the title states, anything I need to know??
  2. So, noticed a shake every now and again, so I decided to check and grease the front suspension. When I went to grease the pass side tie rod end, the joint moved!! So... Time to replace and/or upgrade. The problem: what year is my axle? Truck is an 89, but everything was changed on it before I bought it.. D30, non-disconnect, hi pin, 27spline... All seems correct, but when I go for upgraded tie rods, I come up against 84-90 or 91+. WTF is the difference?!? More importantly, how do I determine difference? HELP...
  3. So... The DS outer axle seal started leaking on the MJ. This is a non disconnect axle with an outer tube seal. It's this correct from the factory, or has it been retrofitted? Took it apart, inner axle was rusty and pitted, but no signs of water. I'm wondering if this wasn't an inner seal axle someone installed before I got the truck (u joint had been replaced recently). We sanded it down and put some tacky Lucas red grease on it to help with leakage, but to no avail... It's worse lol. So the big question, it's this the original axle setup or a retrofit? Also, does anyone know what inner axle I need to replace it, and is it worth it to upgrade to chromoly? Thanks in advance for the help!!
  4. Hello, i am new to this club, and i have a Comanche with a Dana 350 rear axle in it. I was looking to upgrade to a different rear axle with disk brakes and maybe a 3.73 gear ratio, limited slip/clutch drive rear differential. Do you know possibly what year Cherokee or what vehicle i could pull something like this out of or where i could order something like this? possibly as a complete assembly with springs and all? If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Keep it Crawlin and keep it Rockin
  5. I'm wondering if anyone has ever weighed a complete D30 and/or D35 axle assembly out of a MJ? Or a D44 for that matter. Just trying to figure out some comparison data for potential upgrades. Actually, if you have a known weight for any front or rear axle assembly I'm open to hear it.
  6. Well on a trail ride, I got stuck between a rock, and a rock. Front tire pressed up on a rock, and one rear wheel pressed up on a rock. The wheel base was just perfect to get jammed up. Gave it some throttle (just off idle), and POP! Guy behind me heard it. Said after the pop, only one of my rear tires spun. I have a locker, so both should turn. I make some adjustments, and I'm able to drive out. At this point, I'm thinking something in the locker popped. But as I keep going, the tire stays in the axle housing, but still only one tire has power. I'm in the middle of this run, and decide to keep on going. I had to use the winch, once, due to lack of traction. I then drive ~7mi or so home, at 60MPH. Jeep wonders on the road, kinda odd. Get it home, jack it up, and discover I had actually broken an axle shaft. Had I known this, I would have put it on a trailer.. Considering the difficulty of the trail, I was shocked it made it on a broken axle. Its like an athlete finishing a race with a broken leg :) The reason the whole axle assembly did not fall out, is cause I converted the 8.25 to disks. The calipers and disks held it in place. Good reason to switch to rear disks. Lesson : Stock axles can break with 32" tires. I have up-graded all the axle shafts to Alloys (Front and Rear). Also, because I lost one rear axle, and had an open front diff, I had traction issues. So I also added an Eaton E-Locker to the front. That way I have 2 lockers, and should I loose another shaft, I should be able to limp off the trail. Here is one of the obstetrical I went through. Just before the break. Image Not Found
  7. I put together a few parts to allow 3 hoses vent. Transmission, Transfer-case, and Front Diff. Feed to a distribution block, with a small filter. Mounted high up on the firewall. Image Not Found
