  1. The AX15 transmission case is 16-1/2" long. It features a cast aluminum case with a cast-aluminum mid-plate. The AX5 transmission case is 15-5/8" long. It features a cast aluminum case with a cast-iron mid-plate. I think the type of mid-plate is the easiest way to tell the two apart.
  2. No. You can use the 5spd, just don't plan on using 5th gear unless you gear the axles lower.
  3. I ran 5.5" coils for a while with the stock steering setup. No need for a drop pitman arm. Sounds like you may need a more reputable shop, or at least one that can more clearly describe to you why they can't do the alignment.
  4. He's right, forgot the 2.5L 4spd was plagued with 3.55 gears, despite my MJ having the same setup LOL.
  5. Yes, they'll bolt up, but the front output side of the transfer case will be closer to the tub than if using a XJ/MJ transmission. There may be fitment issues here.
  6. Again, apples to oranges. You may want to research a little better as the Quadra-Drive does not have auto lockers in both axles, but limited slip diffs.
  7. A bit dramatic but ok. You're preaching to the choir as I run spools in both ends of my DD. But it's not for everyone, hence the heads-up Mnkyboy was trying to give the OP.
  8. Apples to oranges. Mnkyboy is simply warning against using an auto locker in the front if you plan on running a 242 in the full-time position. An auto locker locks under acceleration, and you don't want a locked front axle on the pavement when turning. I surely don't know who would. The QuadraDrive systems are nothing like the 242 in fulltime with a front auto locker. The QuadraDrive systems only lock up differentials when slippage is indicated via the computer sensors. I love the QuadraDrive II in my '05 Grand, really gets the Hemi power to the ground.
  9. Until you tried to turn under throttle. Mnkyboy isn't arguing the 242 is inherently weak or a bad choice, only that when used in Full-Time 4wd with a front automatic locker you will get horrible driving characteristics on dry pavement. But what do I know, I've ran a welded d30 for years and now run spooled d44's on each end.
  10. ATF in the tcase, Redline MT90 in the AX transmissions. Redline is a synthetic so the shifting is very smooth, even in cold climates. It's specially formulated to be easy on the soft brass syncros and will often times improve notchy shifting from synchros on their way south. The Redline MT90 is pricey but worth it.
  11. I agree with mnkyboy, I wouldn't want power to the front axle in fulltime 4wd with a front auto locker. You're asking for trouble trying to turn on pavement in a high-traction situation when on the throttle. You want the front unlocked on pavement, which is impossible when accelerating in 4wd fulltime.
  12. Right, which is why I said whatever the 242 uses to differentiate speed between the 2 axles. My point was made.
  13. I think the 242 is bad. When you turn the front driveshaft and rear driveshaft will turn at slightly different speeds, which the viscous coupling or whatever the 242 uses in 4full-time is supposed to allow for. So that part inside the 242 is bad, or it could be a stretched chain. The chain skipping usually sounds like somebody hitting under the floor with a hammer.
  14. The numbers are generally easy to read off the old parts. Or use the original vehicle the axle was in to source the parts locally.
  15. A 62mm throttle body will increase your throttle response and improve power. I have 62mm throttle bodies and spacers available for '91-'04 Jeeps if anybody is interested. The 62mm TB does not have the taper below the throttle plate as in a stock TB, so air gets past the throttle plate much sooner and power is instant, a very noticeable improvement. Take a look down a stock throttle body and slowly open the throttle plate, you'll see how much throttle movement is needed before air enters the engine.
  16. That Expedition needs airbags. I wouldn't recommend getting a 1/2T for towing duties, the transmission won't be up to the task of the mountains in your area.

  22. Thanks but that part I know. I'm building this axle without the drivetrain in the Jeep so I'm looking at getting the pinion in the ballpark.
  23. Building a front d44 for my '89 MJ, narrowing a '79 Ford hp44 to Waggy width. While I'm narrowing it, I can run the pinion up while maintaining proper caster. Anybody have pinion angle recommendations for 6"-6.5" front coils?
  24. Usually cheapest and easiest to get a used MJ/XJ/TJ front CV driveshaft and have the length modified for your use in the rear.
