  1. It give you some idea of how larger or smaller tires will change the way your car performs. Example, if most of your driving is on the freeway at 70 mph (for example) and your engine turns at 2250 rpm. By knowing the size tire you have now, you can calculate the change in engine speed if you go to bigger tires. Bigger tires will mean a slower turning engine at the same speed. Say perhapse 1850 rpm instead of 2250 rpm. And the typical engine produces less horsepower/torque at 1850 rpm than 2250 rpm. So your truck will not accelerate as well or go up a hill as well with the bigger tires. Hope this makes some sense.
  2. Guess you never heard of the Renault Dauphine??
  3. I have no use for professional athletes be they in college or the so called pros. They get paid way too much and get way, way, way, too much adulation. But the real problem is not the athletes or the stupid team owners. It is the idiot fans, who eat this dribble up and shovel money towards the professional and college sports. It is a problem with the society we live in. Me, I have not been to a professional game in a good 20 years, maybe 25 years. Who needs a "role model" just because they can move a ball down some field? That said, Tony Gwynn was a hell of a nice guy who did not let things go to his head.
  4. The plastic bed liner has been on my 1991 truck since it was new. Had the truck repainted 3 years ago. Not a speck of rust on the bed, shop said the truck bed looked like new and did not have to be painted. Now, the truck has also had a SnugTop shell on it since it was new. Maybe that is part of the reason there is no rust in the bed. The other reason the truck has not rust- the truck has lived in Southern California since it was new.
  5. I should have what you need/want. Might even be chrome mirrors. Will unpack them Sunday night and take some pictures. P.M. me with your email and I will send pictures.
  6. Thanks, Johnny. I'll give him a call on Sunday evening. Tied up all weekend long finishing a flooring project here in town.
  7. Nice tack modification. Where did you get the picture from? This is on my "to do" list of half way finished projects somewhere/sometime.
  8. JohnnyC, Guessing you have looked at this one. Do you know if the trans is an automatic or manual? Assume it is a long bed, since it is the metric ton. One final qiestopm. Do you know why he is parting it out with a rebuilt, 0 mile engine? Thinking maybe I could use for a 4 x 4 conversion if it is automatic and a 242 transfer case. For the right price, that is.
  9. Kind of figured it would not work with the H.O. engine. Next question is how to imitate the old vacuum advance distributor function in the High Output engines. I "assume" the OBD 1 ecu performs that function to the extent possible, within emission constraints. But I would also guess the vacuum advance function can be improved under low load conditions of highway driving. And that leads to retuning the stock ecu by who?
  10. Previous owner of my camper shell had done this rather than buy a new strut. Lift the back gate for the shell and the PVC falls down and locks in place by gravity. Still on the shell today. 1 inch PVC about 5 or 6 inches long. Works just fine! Wish I had thought of posting this.
  11. Are those still available? I thought I bought the last one in captivity about four years ago. I did from the dealer. But as it turned out the PC307 from RockAuto was a Siemens, made in France. I think they're still available. cruiser54, Please tell me more about the high altitude CPS. Does it fit the High Output 4.0? Am I correct that it advances the timing a few degrees to compensate for lower density air at high altitude? Has anyone used this on the 4.0? Thanks for any information.
  12. One word: "Supercharger" You want more low end grunt, then you want a supercharger. Did not say it was cheap, but it will do more for that 2.5 4 banger than anything else. Especially big improvemet at the LOW end. Everything else you can do for the 4 banger will improve the top end, but not the low end. Now, gears will deliver more torque to the ground, but your engine will be screaming on the freeway. A big diesel engine conversion will also get you low end power in spades. But you will need $10K or so for starters.
  13. Noticed these last weekend at Costco. Thought about buying 4 of these to put in the garage to light up the sides of the cars. But I would have to convert them to hard wired so they would all work on a single switch. Guess I could install 4 more outlets and just plug them in? I currently have 3 two lamp 4 foot fixtures at the front end of the garage plus to 150 watt equivalant CF bulbs, one in the center of the garage, one by the house entrance door. All are on one switch. Anita might kill me if I spend more $$ on garage electrical upgrades. Just dropped $800 to ad a 220 volt circuit and 4 additional 110 volt circuits, two in the garage, two outside the house. Now I have electric power all over the place, including on the upper concrete pad!!
  14. The lug pattern difference is the least of your worries. The real problem is how to mount the S10/Bronco/Factory XJ swing away tire carrier to the MJ body. The MJ box profile does not match the XJ body profile at the mounting point for the hinges at all. It is an even bigger issue with the other junk yard swing away tire carriers. That leaves the bumper mounted swing away carrier as the most reasonable option. Problem here becomes the expense of buying a new bumper/tire carrier combination. The factory offered a bumper mounted hinged tire carrier for the XJ in the early 90's. Just have not seen one in the junk yard. One or two were also offered after market, have not found one in a junk yard. For the first couple of years of the Crand Cherokee, the factory offered a bumper mounted swing away carrier. The pivot point was on the drivers side, which I like better. Have seen one at a junk yard while on vacation in San Antonio (Yes, I said "vacation" and "San Antonio" actually visiting Anita's mom and brother for a few days). Did not have the tools required so I just settled for pictures. What I liked about this factory carrier was that it tied into the factory class 3 trailer hitch on the driver side for extra support bracing of the bumper mounted pivot point. By doing this and with an add on backing plate, the factory bumper was still used. No need to design, fabricate or purchase a new bumper. "One of these days" I may get around to actually getting a swing away carrier for the truck, but truth is I have not needed it in the 8+ years I have owned the truck and likely never will. The factory 23.5 gallon gas tank gets me where I want to go and a second gas tank would be the only reason to move the spare tire. Even then a front hitch mounted tire carrier would be much cheaper and easy to buy - I did install a front mounted trailer hitch for about $125 to carry a couple of bikes or my Honda Trail 90, Also makes moving the camping trailer easier for me. So I would suggest you take a hard look at buying a front mounted trailer hitch for an XJ (it bolts right on the MJ) and a receiver mounted spare tire carrier. Your total cost should be $150 or less. Problem solved with no fabrication required!
  15. Yes, those are the B pillars. You can also get lamps for the foot area from a Cherokee in the junk yard. They plug in to an existing plug and function right along with the B pillar lights. Next for interior lights, is a map light built into the rear view mirror. Those come from some GM SUVs and pickup trucks from the 80's and 90's. There are DIY threads in the DIY section.that tell you how to do it.
  16. Your 1986 truck had a max payload weight of 1000 kg (2240 lbs) or so, WHEN PROPERLY equipped from the factory. Some, but not all of the equipment would be an automatic transmission, a factory heavy duty cooling system, v6 engine, AMC 20 rear axle, a specific ratio, power steering and brakes. There is more I am sure. Your truck also would have a MAX GVW rating that also caps you payload. A dual axle will not up your factory payload rating, rather will reduce your payload because it is heavier than the stoc AMC 20 axel. Also if you want to tow more than 1000 lbs, the factory says you need a frame mounted receiver and an equalizing hitch. PLUS all the H.D. stuff listed above. And the MAX tow rating for the 86 is 3500 lbs WHEN properly equipped. If you need to move more than that, as Jim said, get a 3/4 ton full lize pick up. Now, people will tell you they towed/carried way above those limits with none of the "required" equipment. Lots of times. Yes, they have. But this is what the factory says is required.
  17. You want to get a Mityvac MV8500. It is great for a diesel. I have one for my TDI http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=mighty+vac&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=1100609321&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=555343702641244789&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_9415p0dmmd_b
  18. Pick and Pull or Ecology salvage yards have tons of them. You might want to get a new gas cap also. I have failed twice because of a bad gasket on the gas cap. New cap is a $10 fix. And just keep the stock air filter box after you pass. Those cone filters are junk and marketing hype.
  19. Come down a little?? Jim, what would you pay for it? Me - I would not waste my time even talking to him. I'll go $500 on any RUST FREE, complete MJ that starts and runs and has a title. And what would the little lady say? I KNOW what I would hear and quite a bit more than just "hearing about it". Our place has a 16 by 55 concrete pad with side access. Problem is she looks at it out of her (yes her) kitchen window. So 98% of the time it has to be clear. But I do have a 3 car garage for my toys and she does not complain when I put her car on the drive way for an extended time. So all is good.

    Tail Lights

I have an N.O.S. set I will part with, but not cheap. Personally, Shipp_m is right. Try to restore a used set of taillights.

  22. Nice looking truck! Under $3500 seems reasonable to me for a 25 year old truck in this condition. The $6K asking price was unrealistic, IMHO. Way too many sellers asking for the moon. Glad you both were reasonable people. Please post some pictures of the interior. Congratulations on the new truck!
  23. Want to trade your visor and $600 for my NOS tail lights??? :brows:
  24. Wonder if he would trade me the visor and $500 for my NOS tail lights?
  25. He is into Willys Jeeps, not the MJ. Most likely not the same fellow.
