Bored with my MJ so Time for it to get chopped up
johnj92131 replied to Jeepman's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
The problem with trying to sell all the parts you put into you truck (or any vehicle for that matter), is that you are buying new parts, paying for the labor to install them (either your time or somebody's time). Then you have the labor to take them out again and when you sell them, they are used parts in used condition. On top of that, somebody has to pay to ship the parts to the buyer. If you pay to ship them, it means less money in your pocket, If the buyer pays to ship them, it means he has to pay less to you for the parts. Bottom line, building an auto project is a money pit and none of us should expect to get much of our own investment back. -
How is your night vision with the Quad headlights? I "assume" they are just stock sealed beams? I like the simple white paint job. To me the fake wood trim looks...well "fake".

He will be fine buying a truck in Utah. Roads don't get salted in the western part of the country. Rust is not a big problem.

Hi Jim, That point comes to most of us sooner or later. Other things are just more important than our old toys and we let them go. Hope you stick around here, even without an MJ. Personally, I parted with some of my own toys about 1985 and moved to a different place in life. A year or two I rediscovered a great old toy and I get to enjoy it all over again.

Diesel (TDi) conversion discussion & research
johnj92131 replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hi masimmons25, Tell us more about your conversion - which engine are you using and what year is it going into. Where are you sourcing the TDI to Jeep transmission adapter? What year Comanche are you converting to TDI Power? You may want to consider just using the A pillar to mount the egt/boost gauges. Then use the stock 6 gauge Comanche/Cherokee cluster to pick up the volts, oil pressure, tach, speedo and fuel gauge. Dakota Digital has a solution for the stock Jeep tach for $85 also. WRONG! Just read post 83 - seems it did not work and there is a simple solution It is mentioned in this conversion thread: http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?75161-Jeep-cherokee-TDI -

I "think" the thread(s) you are refering to concern the Pumpe Duse engines, not the VE pump engines like the AHU/ALH. I will have to do more reading on TDI Club for older XJ/TDI swaps. Let me have your email and I will send you some pictures of my 1Z in the Passat. Also have a partially stripped 1Z on an engine stand, but the accesories like the A/C are gone, so that will not help. EDIT: I think this thread answers the question about fitting the A/C system with the ALH engine: http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?75161-Jeep-cherokee-TDI Matt Whitbread is doing my conversion, so I don't have the MJ diesel here at home. -
If money is tight, here is what I would suggest: You live in a large metropolitan area, there are tons of adult education opportunities all around. Find a local welding class at one of them and make putting together the kit bumper of your choice your class project. Any welding class will have all the tools you will need to put the bumper together - so no need for you to buy expensive tools. You will also have a good teacher who can show you how to correct the mistakes you will make and let you know when you have done a proper job. In the end, you will learn a lot about how to weld and will earn the satisfaction of a job well done.

So post the ad/contact info and more information about this Washington truck. May be someone else on here who could buy it. -
Diesel (TDi) conversion discussion & research
johnj92131 replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Why ScanGauge2? Because I have used it for years on the Passat and it reads all the VW sensors that the ECU reads, I am simply familiar with it and know it is plug and play with the VW computer.ODBII. BUT that doesn't mean I will not attempt to get the Jeep gauges working properly. The Volt Meter and Oil Pressure should be a no brainer. The Jeep boost gauge does not read over 12-15 psi and the scale is near useless. As for the Tach, I simply have no idea what it will require to make it work with the TDI engine yet. Just have not thought about it. With all the Jeep TDI conversions out there, I am very sure there is a reasonable solution available. My next step is to get a clutch/pressure plate/flywheel kit. My AX15 has the internal slave and I am wondering if I should just bite the bullet right now and do an external slave conversion before I run into a future clutch problem like Krusty just did with his 3.3 Cummings. Don't really want to have to pull the trans for a slave cylinder leak. But converting to the external slave means locating a new bell housing. Not that hard, just money. -
Benefits of the 97+ swap?
johnj92131 replied to Jaxso32's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Excellent point. Just make sure the 96 has OBDII. Not all the early ones may have had OBDII because it was a Jan 1, 1996 requirement. -

Yes, like $45 vs $100 for the motor. -
LED headlights I've never seen before.

I have never noticed any flicker with these lights. And I did a whole lot of driving last summer with the Comanche - 2 different round trips from the Pacific to Atlantic to Pacific trips in the Comanche. First trip was San Diego to Boston and back to San Diego. Second trip was up the Pacific Coast from San Diego to Victoria, B.C, to Michigan to South Carolina and home to San Diego. -

With the 97 doors, you will get cheaper to replace power windows. On OBDII advantages, you can get the engine chip tuned for more power and economy. Works especially well if you go to a stroker engine. -

For that kind of money, just buy a pair of TruckLites. I got mine on Craigslist for $250 and have seen others for $300. Amazon has them for $162: https://www.amazon.com/Truck-Lite-27450C-LED-Headlamp-High/dp/B013FX3OEC/ref=sr_1_1?m=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&s=warehouse-deals&ie=UTF8&qid=1482572176&sr=8-1&keywords=truck+lite+led Or new ones for $180 https://www.amazon.com/Truck-Lite-27450C-Headlamp/dp/B007ED7HNY/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1482572372&sr=1-3&keywords=truck+lite+headlights -
Gasoline expands and vaporizes as it gets warm/hot. Arizona summer temperatures can get close to 120F. If you seal the vents, pressure inside the tank will build and you can force gas out the fuel filler when your tank is full. Potential fire hazzard at worst. A fuel spill potential at minimum. I sure do not want to spill gasoline in my garage on a hot night. Even here in San Diego. Too many potential ignition sources, starting with the water heater Personally, I would take the evaporative system off a Cherokee and use that on my Comanche. There are a number of good size pick a part yards in the Phoenix area. As a bonus, the pick a part yards offer the chance to learn by taking somebody elses car a part. If you break something, no harm to your truck.

Diesel (TDi) conversion discussion & research
johnj92131 replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
WAY too many issues and expensive solutions to go that way. Just get the TDI OBDII into the cab, then use a ScanGaugeII for monitoring the TDI engine. Spend your money on an AX-15 transmission with the cable speedometer drive on it. -

My 86 dash has no electronics, so no issue for me. The VW ODBII wiring will be mounted in the cab where it can be easily plugged into. Just like the stock VW. -

Krusty, How many miles on the clutch? Did you go with all new when you did the engine conversion? I will be interested to know what you find broke. -
You should buy a factory service manual! It is full of great diagrams and everything you need in the way of instructions to take things a part and put them back together correctly. Not being a smart a**. The factory service manual is an essential tool if you are going to work on your old truck. The only alternative is to pay a good shop a bunch of good money! Now, without looking at my service manual, I think the hoses go to the fuel evaporation canister for vapor recovery.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the OEM cooling system! It does the job it was designed to do when the system is properly working. The engineers at Jeep have a whole bunch more education, training, experience and real world testing than you or I. Just get your cooling system working the way the factory built it and you should not have any problems. I just went thru some cooling issues and guess what? Once properly set up with the correct water pump and thermostat, my cooling system is just fine.

Fuel pump questions for 97+ engine swap
johnj92131 replied to Waytard22's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Bo, that TJ tank was a replacement for the stock Comanche tank, right? Not a second tank in place of the spare tire?
