  1. By that logic NASA wastes peanuts compared to what the US socialized industrial military complex wastes. Yet if you were to say that the DOD's budget was one big waste of socialized tax dollars you might find yourself quickly hanging from a noose. NASA's budget is about 3% of what the DOD's budget is. DOE's budget is about $60 billion a year, other institutions like the NSA and NRO.....your guess is as good as mine. However, for the peanuts we spend on NASA we reap all sorts of economic benefits, same goes for military R&D. It was massive government spending during WWII that spurred all sorts of new inventions, not just a new gadget, but chemical and metallurgical engineering, the birth of the polymer industry, the nuclear age, etc. Now it was private business that pushed forward with those things, but for so much of it the catalyst came from government funding research. A classic example(though not related to research), is the interstate highway system. Eisenhower sold it saying it was for defense, but look at how indispensable it is to our current economic structure. China even went as far as to copy our system nearly verbatim with the exception of slightly wider lanes(to accommodate shipping traffic better). The DOD spent metric-$#!& tons of money on the GPS system, but look how important the GPS system is world-wide? Ever watch star trek? Did you know that all of the windows on the ships are supposed to be made of "transparent aluminum"? Guess what? Nasa invented that, the transparent aluminum is now used in the HMMWV armored windows.(polycrystalline alumina that is). Infared thermometers that have been used for abotu 20 years now were developed by NASA, kodiak film, ya, that 35mm film you used for decades untill you got that shiney new digital camera, was developed by NASA for use on the moon. Regular film wasn't good enough, so NASA worked with kodiak to develop a film suitable for use in outer space. The film turned out to be so good that kodiak pushed for its use in all consumer camera's. There are something like 6500 patents registered by NASA, if you cannot see the intrinsic value in that then let me leave you with one last argument. China and Japan turn out 60 engineers to every 1 of ours. Japan has 130 million people China has 1.3 billion The US has about 310 million(we will wait for the new census results to be sure). We as a nation cannot hope to maintain our technological edge and risk sliding into third world status without the research programs that go on with NASA, DOD, and DOE. You may call it a waste, I call it investing in America's technological future. I know I sure don't want to compete with a chinese guy getting paid 39 cents an hour to assemble iPhones. I agree with you mostly, except your implications around why China and Japan produce more engineers than the U.S. It is simply supply and demand, there is more demand for engineers in for example China and India. I have provided a link to American Society of Mechanical Engineers article that might give you insight from an engineers perspective. If you are wondering why I am so tuned into this is that I am a Graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo School of Engineering, and have many a colleague that had were educated as Engeneers and have since changed their fields because there was not a demand for their services. You and I both agree that the Federal Government is the cornerstone of U.S. reasearch and development, but many private corporations chose to utilize the great work of NASA and the Military in R&D and develop offshore because it is more profitable. http://memagazine.asme.org/articles/200 ... horing.cfm

  3. Best of luck Mike! That emergency vet in Cordelia is excellent so if she didn't feel comfortable performing the surgery you (she) made a good call. I have spent my share of late nights and early mornings at Davis and Cordelia considering all the pooches I have owned in the last 30 years and it wasn't fun.
  4. Thank the Lord there wasn't more damage or anyone hurt! I really like your front clip
  5. Great find! When I first met my wife she had a third generation Camaro with an air intake door that opened on full throttle, we got in a lot of trouble because she liked to put the pedal to the metal just to see that darn door open up
  6. I used the Bosch from Napa for my 91, it has been in since March and works great. I don't know abou the RENIX pumps, but for the HO the Bosch was much smaller than the pump it replaced, but still performed as good as the old pump.
  7. Here's an MJ trailer Wildernest combo from a guy on Naxja. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.p ... 048&page=5
  8. Found this one. http://forum.ih8mud.com/trailer-tech/32 ... heavy.html
  9. Love those old OTT campers! That's pretty much all we had when I was coming up in the 60-70s.
  10. Fuel pump :dunno: I had something very similar happen to my 91 four years ago, fuel pressure checked out when tested at idle and acceleration (I even purchased the DRB II scanner to verify numbers), the minute I took her on the street or freeway she seemed starved for fuel. I replaced everything as you did and nothing helped, as a last resort I replaced the fuel pump, and she ran like normal.
  11. From JPmagazine New Venture Gear NVG241OR Donor Vehicles: '03-'06 Wrangler Rubicon Swap into: Any Jeep equipped with a driver's side drop front axle and a transmission with a common round 6-bolt pattern and 23-spline output. Identify: Like the NP231, look for the tag near the rear output above the fill plug. The case itself looks a lot like an NP231, but it has a balancer on the output requiring a flanged driveshaft, more bolts holding the case halves together and a larger nose area where the input is (which houses the planetary low range). Gears: 1:1, 4.0:1 Pros: With a bigger chain, more bolts holding it together, and a larger planetary set, this is a much beefier T-case than the NP231. Cons: Its size can be a detriment to clocking it flat, and not everyone needs the 4:1 gears. Comments: Only available in the Rubicon Jeeps to date, the JK NP241 won't easily swap into the earlier TJ/YJ/XJ/MJ/ZJ Jeeps. The TJ cases though will bolt up in most applications with minimal fuss. The stock shifter linkage will likely have enough adjustment to work too. The front driveshaft should be able to be kept, but the rear will need modifications. There is no mechanical speedometer output so earlier Jeeps will need another solution for speed pickup. http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/ ... cases.html And for getting your speedo to work. http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/ ... index.html I haven't found anything to help with the 4WD light. Good luck!
  12. Agreed I remember this article from the October 2007 issue of JP. http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/ ... to_06.html
  13. One of the higher amp accessories in the dash would be the fan motor, but like has been said it has a fuse. If you find the cause please let us know, I remember my the fan blower switch would get super hot in the 99+ TJ's melting the switch. With so much damage to your interior if the fan switch blower was the problem it will be difficult to prove.
  14. Very depressing considering I remember how much work you put into it just getting that 92 from the Sacramento tow yard to Southern California. Considering all the heart and soul you put into her why not keep her? With the damage on the interior why not just go for the 97+ interior swap at your own leisure? I am very sorry for your loss and best of luck in whatever your decision is about her.
  15. Hey MIke, I notice only 2 MJ's in your signature....why don't you pick her up?
  16. With wood you don't have to worry about rust :clapping:
  17. Hello everyone. In my never ending quest for MJ parts the folks at http://www.jwjeep.com have a rollbar in the back of a Comanche. I do not believe it is a stock Comanche rollbar as it is mounted on a 1/2 inch woodblock, but might be of value to someone. As for a price their contact info is here. 19. I run 3.73's with 31 STT's great for the daily driving, and if I really need a compound low the tera 4:1 2 low his really come in handy for short hauling assorted junk including retrieving boats from deterioriated boat launches. If I had a stock Tcase I would go with 4.10's.
  20. That was a great chase scene reminded me of the work of William Friedkin in "the French Connection", and "To Live and Die in LA". Going the wrong way near the Henry Ford Bridge between Long Beach and LA was incredible. :clapping:
  21. Aside from my other reasons for being a chicken, I wanted to save these stickers for when I get my truck repainted to the rare "black cherry" color a few years from now. I have some door dings on the drivers side (actually door dents) and my 90 and earlier "Eliminator" stickers have been on my truck since 07. I could then do the ultimate "chicken out" and have the shop install them. ;)
  22. That sounds good to me, since I have not tested any other synthetic with my current Jeep I thought I might keep the conversation to something I was sure of. If other folks want to comment about going to synthetic on a high mileage engine, I think that would be very productive.
  23. Love the ride on my OME's :D
  24. Well my 4.0 has almost 170,000 miles and since 110,000 (When I bought it) I have been using chevron 10/40. A few weeks ago and about 500 miles ago I switched to redline 10/30 synthetic and an old K&N oil filter I had laying around. I was reluctant to do so as I have read threads on many boards about leaks developing, but to date no leaks and as a bonus my lifters aren't nearly as noisy as they used to be. Thus far I have to say I am very pleased with the Redline oil.
  25. OK Mike looks like Don is out as the stickers aren't the 35'' he needs for his long bed. Looks like it'll be you and I one weekend in the future. Yes we are two chickens but at least we''ll be two chickens with four hands for the job. Ahh, Magnum Force, my favorite line. I have a set of SPORTRUCK decals I've now had for two years (since I got the truck painted) that I'm too chicken to put on my truck. :rotf: So I don't know how much "real" help I would be. :dunno: But I'm there for moral support if you need.
