Slave cylinder internal or external?
87MJTIM replied to Herada12's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You did not say if you have a 6 or 4 cylinder. If a 6, then the trans came with an internal slave. (I don't know if the 4s were int or ext.) I'm not sure I understand the hoses you describe, though. Pictures would help. -
When the engine was rebuilt the mechanic put the oil filter adapter pointed to rear of the engine. It used to point up. Now, when I change the oil, I have to crawl under the truck and reach up to get the OF off. I cannot pull it out the top with the sender unit and wires in the way. I have tried everything. I see a bolt on the face of the OF adapter. Can I loosen the bolt and rotate the OF adapter back to its original position? Will turn easily? Is it threaded? Is there a gasket or sealer on it?

Manual v.s. auto your guys opinions
87MJTIM replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Are you a person that drives a manual trans, then get behind the wheel of an auto and try to use both feet on the pedals the way some people do? (You've seen the type. They accelerate with their brake lights on or their brake lights keep flickering on and off.) I tried to drive an auto like that once...only once. My passenger and the car behind me didn't like me. (The brake pedal doesn't go all the way to the floor like a clutch pedal.  ) -

I too have the towing mirrors. I bought replacement mirrors from the auto parts store years ago. I do not believe that XJs ever had the towing mirrors. (July 2014 MJOM) -

Unless you have chrome mirrors, you can go to just about any JY and get the mirrors from a 1996 or earlier XJ. I don't know if the 97 - 01 mirrors will fit. The courtesy light is a common problem. Especially since your truck is 29 yrs old. Search on CC for a thread about the lights. Try ebay. I got a set several years ago from ebay. I think the name was Eurotech, or something like that. You could get doors from a 96 and earlier 4 dr XJ. The 2 dr will not fit. The 97+ doors will fit, but will require some modifications. Also, the contor shape is different. The front diff is probably a Dana 30. The rear could be an AMC 20 (desirable) or a Dana 35 (not so desirable.) Welcome to the addiction. -
What is a "manual transmisson cable"? Is the guy trying to sell you Shine-ola?

Manual v.s. auto your guys opinions
87MJTIM replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I recall that several years ago CA was proposing increased mileage and emission standards for new vehicles. The auto industry responded to CA with the statement that the only way they (auto industry) could meet the proposed standards was to produce and sell more vehicles with manual transmissions. I don't see a problem with that! -

Manuals for me. I've three autos and have not liked driving any of them. We got them for towing a travel trailer. -
Now I have a coil spring question.
87MJTIM replied to Jeep Driver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's what I got with the GS leafs. I put 2" spacers up front to level out the truck. If you did not want any lift from before, like Eagle said, you should contact GS and comment/complain. -
This may sound like a dumb question, but, are sure all of the bolts are off? :dunce:

I've put in my 87 BA10 and an AX15 in my CJ7. Works good.

Replace gear oil? For winter you may want a thinner oil.

Help identifing an axle!!!

If the diff cover looks like a WW1 helmet, then I'd say its a AMC20 -
That's not 3" of lift, then. "Lift" is a change upward from the factory ride height. Eagle, you are correct. I should not have stated that I have 3" of lift above original factory ride height. I should have said that I have 3" of rise above the 25 yrs old sagging height. My measurement is an estimate. I did not take before and after height changes. I est. 3" because I had installed 2" spacers up front and still have a slight rake (more than original),

The serp belt is a common noise maker. Also, check the harmonic balancer. That's the large pullie at the bottom the front the belt goes around. When this is going bad, it will squeal. Belts are inexpensive and (relatively) easy to replace. If the noise persists, check the HB. (PS - complete your profile with MJ details. Yr, eng, trans, any modification by your or the PO. Also, give your location: City, State/Province, County) Oh, welcome to the addiction!

My parts manual only has 87 as the earliest year. For 87, there were two types of speedos used, with different part nos. for each (of course). These part nos. are for both the 4.0 and 2.5 2wd. The first one listed as "A", describes the screws on the face of the cluster being slotted screws - #5300-1990. The second one listed as "B", describes the screws as phillips head - #56300-4592. This is used for 88 and 89. I don't know if this helps or not. The OP said he has an 86 2.8.

The cable for cruise threads on to a speed sensor. On the other side of the spreed sensor, a short cable threads on to it then goes to the back of the speedo. The ends for a long cable w/ cruise are different from the long cables w/o.

The cowelsproduct has a Chevy S10 3-3/8" 38-260. That is the closest to the original. The factory striping had the chrome strip centered on the molding. The above example has the strip shifted higher.

Thanks for the link My bodyshop used the molding from a Chevy, either a S10 or 1500. I can't recall It is not a perfect match. The chrome strip is off center

Assuming the 90 is also a 4.0, the trans and matching tcase will bolt right in. You cannot use the tcase from the earlier years for a later year trans (21 splines vs. 23 splines). You will need the trans crossmember from the AX15 and the tcase shift linkages. The front driveshaft will fit. The rear DS from the XJ WILL NOT fit (But you should already have the DS from the 2wd to 4wd you did earlier.) The clutch system and pedals will bolt in. (Don't you already have pedal from the original MJ?) The 90 XJ AX15 will have the dreaded internal slave cylinder. You should search for a bellhousing from a 94+ XJ that will have the external slave cylinder. (Unless the PO changed trans previously.) Others may comment about other items I misssed.
