  1. Well, I would like to see projects with road weary vehicles also. Four Wheeler TV was better about that. But it hasn't been on lately. But, I will continue to watch Trucks!, and even the bastard-ized Extreme Catalog Shopping on before it. And enter such in my stupid Nielsen diary thing every week. Gotta keep anymore 'lifetime' crap off what little of the air I actually watch.

Anyone ever look at the Comanche entry??? While technically correct, its pretty bland. Almost make the MJ sound like an afterthought.
  3. While I agree with you on most of your rant. I do have one bone to pick. This show is produced by someone, for the purpose of making them money. The 'projects' selected for these shows, are to advertise a companies products. Remember the FSJ project. And how ALOT of the parts used came from BJ'S OffRoad? Well, the FSJ belongs to BJ's OffRoad, and they use it as an advertising tool. Your not going to see any 'scrounged' projects. Its not going to sell parts.
  4. Lots of FC fire units, and some CJ ones. I saw a LJ 'Boobwatch' ooops, sorry 'Beach Patrol' one on TV yesterday. Edit--> Did a Google search. Literally found a 'Fire' Variant of every Jeep model except the Comanche.
  5. ???? The airbag is ingenious. It's simple, powerful, and is used extensively in big rigs. The new thing in offroad recovery is a big fat orange airbag that uses your exhaust to lift up the truck. I think it's an ARB product. Jeep on! --Pete Not to mention Fire Departments and Rescue Squads have used them for years.
  6. Make sure you read the lube bottle carefully. I went to get some, cause I figured mine needed changing. I picked up a bottle of parts store brand synthetic, It had a warning against using it in a Limited Slip rear end.

That's exactly what I did. Possibly the best or worst move I ever made, depending on how you look at it. Now 'my' Jeep budget is 'Our' Jeep budget.

    Factory Dually??

Damnit!!! Why are all the cool ones, thousands of mils away. Its always 'half-way to nowhere' for me. IRC, the Renault diesel used in the MJ, is the same one that was in the Cherokee. Yes, it was a 2.1L. But, Winnebago used them in the Lesharo Motorhome. It was oversized van size. There still are lots of parts available for them.
  9. I'm not sure what 'pollution control' you are talking about. The vacuum system can't be removed. Removing the CCV system won't provide any type of gain. Removing the evaporative canister, won't do anything either. It simply has fuel system breather lines, and a vacuum line. Compared to alot of motors the 4.0L is just about as simple as it comes.
  10. Is that leak the diff cover, or is that engine oil???
  11. Not completely true. Some early XJ's had 10" drums on D-35's, but they are 10" x 1.75" rather than 10" x 2 .5" drums on the D-44
  12. Mine made it 140k, Now I have 260k on the odometer. I'm thinking I'd better start saving my pennies.

    The Wife

My club holds a 'Girls run' every year. Yep, the ladies have to drive. Realistically, they spend more time laughing and cackling than wheeling. My wife is the undisputed Queen of carnage every year. I originally took her so that she could see what we were doing. She grew up in a very redneck town, and the fools around her thought 'four-wheeling' was getting drunk and fooling around in a farm field. Now she loves going, and we take our kids. The main problem is she now whines about wanted her own Jeep to wheel.(On top of the 4 we own now). But she now will call parts orders in for me, and doesn't complain about it. She is getting prices on getting my EZ-locker installed while I am on this business trip(My V-day present) The first year, she flatted a tire and almost flipped the Jeep, when noone had any damage. The second year, she ripped off the custom roof rack I had finished building 4 days before. Then after lunch she shattered a axle shaft yoke, and flatted a tire on the same obsticle. Last fall she hit a tree so hard that it smashed in the ARB bumper bad enough that a winch no longer fits behind it, and broke three of the seat mounts. A week after I finished mounting the bumper.
  14. Every set of Rusty's springs I've used have worked very nicely. The've all settled level, and taller than advertised. The 'Brown Santa' should have delivered a set of 4.5" by the time I get home.
  15. Not really rare in Comanches, and it was available on all 'fleet' Cherokees. My 85 came from a city building inspector and had a column shift, with a 4-cyl. I am not for sure, but I believe one of the reasons for the column shifts in MJ's is the shape of the trans tunnel. The MJ tunnel is narrower and taller than the Cherokee, making the bracket and cable adapter to the column shift eaiser to use than trying to mount the bracket and shift lever like a Cherokee. PS, here is a column shift I found on E-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-Jeep-Comanche-4x4-4-0L-automatic-with-AC-Commanche_W0QQitemZ4613041187QQcategoryZ6286QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Damn, 2 on E-bay right now, both within 6 hours of home. Empty project budget, and full storage, not fun.
  16. That's not completely true. In 87, there were some differences. Different mountings for some of the accesory brackets, there are different part numbers for some parts. Variances in vacuum line routings and the like. Remember 87 was the last year of AMC's independence, and the first year of completely new drivetrains in the MJ/XJ. Lots of funky stuff happens, even more than was the 'norm' at AMC.
  17. I always love a good bumper thread.. :D Doug Fir, 6x6 available from your local Home Depot(your all-Off Road store)
  18. I have 2 of the $9.95 versions of that grinder. The difference? Mine have a thumb switch on top, rather than the paddle switch. I just put a wire wheel on one, and 1/4 thick grinder wheel on the other. Damn, now I need to go get another one, for 1/8 cutoff wheels. A word of warning though. That metal fabbing stuff is addicting. A grider, turns into two. Which turns into a chopsaw, then somehow a welder will find its way home, then you'll find yourself 'accidently' looking at presses.
  19. I tried to sell mine 3 or 4 times also. Had a couple of what realistically were good offers. Just wasn't enough to make me sell it. Of course I did set the asking price way higher than I should have. Now mine is sitting at my work, where I store projects. It tears me up everyday to see it sitting there.
  20. Are they keeping the front 5-link? If it's not inconvenient, take pics, I always like looking at things. And what the heck is the land of Fruits and Nuts? :?: I believe he is using a custom version of the 5-link. I am probably going, they changed my flight to Wed. now. (Land of fruits and nuts is Southern California) I didn't take any photos. Turned out he is using some off the shelf Rubicon Express parts. He is using them full width, and placement of the perches, is absolutely critical. Other than that, it was alot of measuring and adjust the CAs to get everything level, and straight.

  22. I am supposed to be going to help put a pair of Waggy D-44's under a Cherokee this weekend. I can takes pics if someone needs a pic of something. Its about 50/50 wether I'm going, I have to go to the land of Fruits and Nuts this next week.
  23. Welcome. I swear it wasn't me. Even though I was in that neighborhood today. Rob L. is over there, and there is another member of the Yahoo group near there.
  24. Dang, we are getting to be an international success. Welcome, and very nice clean truck.
  25. Many people off-road with the 2.5l motor. Its simple, durable and cheap to maintain(at least here in the states it is). Other than maybe 1986 models, the US version of the 2.5l is Throttle Body injection rather than a carburetor. You should also have a manual transmission, probably a 5-spd. With 4.10 gearing, you should have enough available horsepower to off-road in a variety of conditions. Deep, thick mud may be a real concern for you. The 2.5l motor lasted in the Jeep lineup until the advent of 2.4l motor just the last few years in the Wranglers. The primary reason for putting a small motor like this into Comanches and Cherokees, was the fuel economy. There is a faction of US consumers that are throughly concerned with the fuel economy that a vehicle has. You probably haven't had to deal with that attitude much in Argentina. Your nation is the number 5 worldwide oil exporter, the US is the number 1 oil importer, and your nation's number 1 oil customer. In fact the Citgo Oil company maintains a tremendous US presence.
