After the thread a couple weeks ago. I got to wondering about Comanches in fire service. I found this today. David Fetherston's classic photo book Jeep: Warhorse, Workhorse & Boulevard Cruiser includes this nice shot of a 1986 J-10 Townside pickup used as an air cascade truck by the Hopatcong Fire Department in New Jersey, as well as a photo of their Comanche pickup support truck. Here is the only photo I have found of the MJ. If anyone has more or of another fire MJ, please post up.

That thing wouldn't fit behind my seat. How far up do you have to leave the seat?

Lowered trucks are what they are, someone elses idea of fun. I was on my way to the scrapyard yesterday with another 2400 lbs. of assorted stuff in the MJ. And a lowered S-10 passed by me with a few pieces of scrap in it. I got to the scrapyard and unloaded. When I went to the scalehouse to get my ticket and get paid, the kid with the S-10 was in line with me. He couldn't believe the weight the girl read to me. He asked me what I added to the truck to get it to carry that much. When I told him its a Metric Tonne and it came that way, he was astounded. He told me that if he tried to put more than 500 lbs. in his S-10 it would drag the rear bumper on the gorund.

My wifes was last week, and my Dads is end of the month. The goofiest member of our 'family', my wife's little brother his is AFD. So in other terms. The lady who keeps my Jeep problem in check, and the guy responsible for it.

...unless your lucky like me and have a selc-trac system. :D but correct me if I'm wrong, it wasnt an option in the later years for the MJs or was it? I'm not too sure on that. but my 86 has selc-trac and i have driven it on dry pavement (bcuz i didnt notice it was on  ) and had no problems at all. alex It lists it in my '88 sales literature. But I'm not totally sure about the 'true' availablity of it. My 88 Cherokee had it, and I used to just leave it in full-time for my wife about 3/4's of the winter. She used to call me everytime she had to go down a half slippery road. And she was a rural mail carrier at the time.

Thomas, where is in Northern Illinois? I live near Rockford, and if you need someone who is 'Jeep Experienced' I can give you a hand... I'll bet if it is a long time local truck the shifter linkage is just corroded, and cruded up. All the salt and crap on the roads here does an unbelievable amount of damage to our Jeeps. The description you gave sounds remarkably like it didn't engage competely in 4wd, I have heard this noise on almost every Jeep I have bought or looked at. Ohh.. a local jeep club link is in my sig.

Toyota used a 6 lug pattern for awhile, it matches the axles on a FSJ.

The lamp part numbers are Wagner H4703(low beam) and Wagner H4701(high beam) both on the shelf of my local O'Riellys Auto Parts. GE,Delco,Silvania all use the part number. Here is a method to put in a SilverStar bulb: http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums/ar ... -3585.html That would also work with a the same type of Cool Blue bulb. Someone has already swapped the 97+ front on an MJ, I like to do things differently.

The dash is out of a 90ish cherokee, the guy I got it from wasn't real clear. Eventually, the plan is to take a Cherokee limited interior, graft it in. And a Waggy front end and a wood side kit from BJ's and make a Comanche Wagoneer. I love the classic lines of a woody. (grew up in the 70's, folks had a Country Squire) But Quad headlights are a must.

I did a couple of dash upgrades today. I love the classic look of wood, and this a hint of where my Comanche project will go when it finally gets to the front of the line. Time total: 25 minutes Tools: Phillips Screwdriver, scissors, alcohol wipes, Window cleaner Before: After: The brushed aluminum overlay came from www.custombezels.com I bought it off E-bay, along with the woody dash. Total price: about $25

OK got it home, now HELP! please :)
whowey replied to moonchild's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The factory electrical troubleshooting manual is what you need. It has the colors of the wires, plus diagrams of the connectors. They are about 80 fold out pages, and list everything. You can find them on E-bay, for between 30-40 bucks. I will add the MR number(the number of the manual), so you can find one on E-bay. I have replaced the entire harness in a Cherokee and my Comanche, and this manual speeds the process so much its not even funny. -
FuelPump/Sending unit can not find
whowey replied to Speedbump's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was able to find them at RockAuto.com Price was competitive, but I have a really hard time recommending them. Their customer service is absolutely terrible. And their policies for fixing screw-ups is less than optimum. -
A poopload of pictures of how I just got it...
whowey replied to feerocknok's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yep, thats a 904. The tail is a dead giveaway. That adaptor piece between the tranny body and the T-case, is what gives it away. The 727 looks similar, but was used in the full size Jeeps. The Puke-out is a 5-spd that was used with the 6-cyl from 87 until late 89. The 4-cyl MJ, mercifully never recieved the craptastic Puke-out. -
Ford p/u truck coils will work also. But they are very stiff riding. PM Opie over on the Mothership, he was messing around with these last year.

I'll bet the tranny is a 904, not a 727. But the FSM doesn't show 3.73 as an available ratio for Auto trannys in 86. 3.31, 3.54, and 4.11 are what the FSM shows. 3.31 was in the 'fuel economy package'. I agree it is probably brake fluid leaking out, -
Got 22, I missed questions about the antique jeeps.

Royal Purple Max ATF.

There was one of these started over on the Yahoo site. Its in files or D-bases. You may have to look a little, it was quite awhile ago that it was done. Paging Pete: Do you remember this, or have I gone crazy again?

Damn, that is the almost the exact cap I want. Good find.

newbie here with some lift questions
whowey replied to kidkusu's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Strangely enough, I encountered the almost the same question this week. The AAL in the pack I was working with, was the only leaf without the holes for the anti-squeak pads in them. All of the factory leaves had hoels drilled in either end for the plastic retaining clips that held the pads between the leaves. -
The Comanche didn't "flop". AMC sold the Jeep division to Chysler in August of 1987. Chryco owned the only two midsize p/u's offered. They simply strangled off the one they didn't spend millions devolping. BTW, the first Dakotas had either a 2.5l 4-cyl or a V-6(IIRC 3.3L). And they weren't really selling all that well, until the introduction of the 3.9l Magnum V-6.

MJ vs 5.9L GC as a DD(kinda long)
whowey replied to Jason H. Rea's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
***mini thread hijack*** Can you give any more info on that? There's a ZJ at the 'yard now they're selling for $1000 but it has "bad trans" written on the back hatch window. The thing is in nice lookn shape, about 140K on it, and it's black-on-black. I was gonna talk turkey with them but am a little concerned about the trans issue. I figured I could just pull another trans from the 'yard for $100 and slap it in, but if all of 'em have issues I think I'll pass it up. I HATE auto trannies, anyways :D Jeff **now returning to your regularly scheduled thread** Sure here is the link to the 'what came in what' of Grand trannies. http://www.nagca.com/grandtech/grandtranslist.htm The 42RE is king of stink-a-roo trannies. BTW, don't worry me with a Hijack. I'm MWC on the Mothership. Hijacks are second nature. -
I throw a 10lb bag of ice in there on my old wheeler. The new on has carpet, and floor.

MJ vs 5.9L GC as a DD(kinda long)
whowey replied to Jason H. Rea's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I agree with most of what is posted here. But,,,, Lately, I have been driving about 300 miles a week. There is absolutely no way I could do it in the MJ. The damn rear springs are way too stiff, and the interior just isn't that nice. When I had my 5.9 ZJ, I didn't have hardly any problems. It was a lease vehicle though, and the lease expired so I gave it back. It had 45k on it after 4 years. I bought a 95 ZJ cheap to be a daily driver, and I love it. It has the 5.2l in it. Its the same motor as my old Dakota, and not all that hard to work on. My kids certainly appreciate the extra leg room and nicer seats over the XJ. And my back certainly appreciates the better seats after 6 hours in them. The problems with ZJ transmissions are limited to certain years, and certain models. Unfortunately Chrysler/Jeep didn't use the 'pick one and use it' ideas that AMC had used. Yes, the VC on the 249 isn't good, but if you follow the owner's manual the problems will greatly be reduced. -
Nope, starts in two more weeks. Just new idiots as hosts. I guess I should say, Trucks! starts in two more weeks. BTW, I hope Stacy's new show is on a network I already pay for. My satellite bill is high enough now.
