89 Comanche 4x4 build - university budget
buxmj replied to 89Comanche4x4's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Nice find! Sounds like a great deal too. Can you give more info? Miles, any rust, plans, etc. Also since you already have a cherokee you probably know a lot about the quirks of these vehicles. Good luck and sounds like the mj is in good hands. Buck. -
Good luck, it is probably the most stressful and time consuming event you may take on. We just moved a year ago. We were in a contract on a different house in this subdivision. The inspection found moisture in 3 walls. They wanted to give us 1500 at closing! Bye bye. The house we are in was an experience also. The owner had passed away and the 4 trustees of the estate were in 4 different states. The house desperately needed a new roof and they didn't want to deal with it. Luckily our roofer changed their schedule and was reroofing a day after closing. They came down in price but we should have held out for more. The biggest piece of advice is make sure you have a good inspector and talk with him/her before you agree to hire. Ask many questions and follow them through the whole inspection. Wear work clothes and ask any question that pops into your head. If he/she has a problem with that, go with somebody else. You can't sue them if they miss something, you can only get a refund. We had a bad experience with an inspector 11 years ago with our first house and had a great experience with the last inspector, esp since he kept us from getting into that other house.

I am the original owner of mine. Bought it in December of 89. It is an 89 with 246k on the ticker. No longer a daily driver, it has earned its spot in the garage. I have put a few thousand miles a year on it since 04, so it was driven pretty hard up until 04.

Hey Scobad, I think I saw you on Sanford ave in Sanford a week or so ago. I was not driving my mj so you didn't see me. Like those wheels, although it was the mj that caught my eye. Great work and keep it up. Buck.

We have an 04 escape that we bought new. It has the V6 and I like the power. It gets just under 20 mpg. My parents have an 06 escape with the 4 cyl. Gets almost 30 mpg but the power difference is huge. My wife's car I would highly recommend but not sure how it would do that far north. She has an 04 mini cooper automatic. I'm 6 2 and the seats give me plenty of room, just no room for anyone behind me. It is a blast to drive and it gets almost 30 mpg. It is a solid car. Good luck.

Project "Honcho" - The '87 MJ

Great day at the jy. I go to that LKQ myself but hadn't been in a while. It is better than the one in Orlando, imo. I have a running list and will have to get back up there soon. Buck. -
Andrew, great truck. I agree with you, keep it stock, especially since it is an eliminator. Even though some other family members didn't give it the tlc it is getting now, I am glad it stayed in the family. Patience definitely paid off for you and the mj. Buck.

Hey Rich, that's great progress. Wish I were a little closer so I could give you a hand in a pinch. Would love to help you and also pick your brain at the same time. Keep the pics coming. Buck.

Welcome from another Orlando mjer. The guy that painted my truck used stainless after it took him a while to get the old ones grinded off. Hope to meet you in person someday. Great find and good luck with the madness. Buck.

Hey Rich, congratulations! Well deserved. Your knowledge is great, but your willingness to share it is greater. Please keep up the good work and I always look forward to your updates. Can't wait to see your mjs in person someday. Buck. -
Wow, that mj is going to look great. That is awesome prep work. Very straight. Can't wait to see it painted. Buck.

Great thread. It sounds like mine. Drove it hard and now it's earned it's spot as the non daily driver. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Glad the surgery went well. Hope the recovery goes quickly and you are back at normal speed soon. That has to be one of the cleanest engine compartments I have ever seen. Do you make house calls? Buck.
-
That mj looks awesome! Good luck with the job search and your hopeful relocation back to Charlotte. Things do work out and hopefully you won't have to wait long for that to happen. Great build and thanks for the attention to detail. Buck.

Glenn, great job with the camo! Truck looks great and thanks for sharing so many pics. Buck. -
Thanks Brett. I bought it at George Ballas Motors on State Avenue in KCK in Dec. of '89. I always smile about that buy because we've all been taken at a dealership. It was a week before Christmas (good time to buy year end models), it was a record cold front for the week (-25 below temp, -70 wind chill), I pulled up in my '86 mj and I think they were pulling straws to see who would come out to meet me. There were 2 mjs exactly alike and they needed to move them both. By the time I got done, the saleswoman slammed the pen down on the paper and said "just sign here". I should have known it was a keeper, I was working at a hotel at the time and my truck was the only vehicle that would jump start all the tenants cars in the lot. Sorry, probably more info than you wanted! By the way, yours will blow mine out of the water, but I do appreciate the kind words! Buck.

Thank you! Will do better next time.

Here are a few picks of my mj earning its keep with my bedslide. Best thing I ever got for it.[/img]

Thanks dirteatr, yes those are real miles. I drove it pretty hard until 04 when we got the Escape. It seems like it will take forever to get to a quarter million miles, sitting right now on 245+. Got it out on the interstate this morning, still feels good at 70mph. Buck.

It is an aftermarket product that came out of a dakota. There are a few companies that make them. Mine is from Bedslide. I didn't think I would ever be able to afford one but I found this one on craigslist for 225. It came out of a dakota short bed, so between the wheel wells is the exact same. I think you can get them made for any size truck. Thanks for the compliments, I have enjoyed it for the last 21 1/2 years!

Hello all, I haven't posted in a while. Although my mj is not my dd, I do use it to haul stuff. I use our Ford Escape to go to most of my gigs but when I have to haul more than the Escape will handle, the mj comes to the rescue. As you can see, the bedslide is awesome to have. I cannot tell you how many times I banged the top of my head getting into the back of the truck, and since I got the bedslide, not one cranial injury. Other than scheduled maintenance, the only thing I've added are helper springs. I do plan on getting new leaf springs down the road but I am happy how these have helped with the ride of the truck.

Comanche of the month, July 2011 --- MRSIMONS's 1987

Congratulations on mjotm! Well deserved. I like every step you've taken. You went outside the box without being obnoxious. Great design and even though I don't off-road, your work is an inspiration because you do great work! I am sure you get a lot of "Dude, that is one cool rig" or things similar. Buck.
