Where Does All Of This Go?
ParadiseMJ replied to 92tanMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I can only report on what I've experienced with my Renix Jeeps. You're right about that. I looked, and the earlier HO's (XJ) have the MAP on the manifold. Both of them have the MAP line to the TB. They (88 and 90) don't even have the nipple for the MAP line on the intake manifold. Since the TB for an HO and Renix are different...I dunno :???: All my Renix models only have the vac source (one with bolt in it) line. ...and #5 is a fuel tank vent that should be attached to the charcoal canister...I think? :dunno: -
Where Does All Of This Go?
ParadiseMJ replied to 92tanMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The manifold picture: The hose with the bolt in it is for the source vacuum that goes over to the Cruise Control and HVAC controls via the vacuum reservoir behind the front bumper (which is probably long gone, or moved) . The small vac line is a "shadetree" modification, to the MAP sensor. The proper MAP connection goes from the MAP sensor to the throttle body...there should be a rubber plug in the TB, with two holes in it. One is a dummy hole, the other one goes IN to the TB and supplies metered vacuum to the MAP. Whoever did that to it probably ran out of vac line. The issues you're having are likely related to the hole in your throttle body, unless the PO plugged it. Still, ripping and tearing of vac lines "get rid of all that crap and get better mileage" leaves gaps in the system, and likely worse mileage and driveability issues. -
Other than the obvious differences in the color of the connecters (one is light gray 87-89, the other is green 91-?) for the different TCU's can anyone tell me what the difference is in the two TCU's. Are the pins in different order?? http://www.ebay.com/itm/53008383-Jeep-Cherokee-6cyl-Transmission-Computer-Control-Module-TCM-TCU-1991-91-/160951300715?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AJeep&hash=item257971f26b&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-1989-JEEP-CHEROKEE-TRANSMISSION-CONTROL-COMPUTER-MODULE-TCM-8953005305-/290985047053?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AJeep&hash=item43c00f740d&vxp=mtr If my Renix truck has an HO transmission...does it use a Renix TCU with a Renix wire harness OR does the HO tranny use an HO TCU with an HO harness. Or does it matter??
-
Look again for the fuse at the TCU. It's a 10A inline fuse, as PART of the wire harness about a foot away from the TCU connector, taped up about 4-6" away from a resistor pack. If you have an AW4 and a AW4 TCU you have the fuse. If you don't, you have problems. Just sayin'.

I just read the whole ad outloud to my wife... ...she got a look on her face and said she'd meet me in the bedroom... ...this &%#$ works, man!!

Time will tell...if the touch screen still works after 25 years...might be OK. The technology will be well obsolete in 10 yrs. and fixing things won't be DIY anymore. I think it goes right along with vehicles of the day without looking squared off like a Hummer. It looks like a crossover and truly is with a Dart base. Just because a girl doesn't look just like YOUR girl, does not mean she's not a good girl. Now that sounds like it came from a dinosaur like me. I like old fashioned...I'm a senior citizen for christsake...but I'm using a new tablet right now. Like I said, time will tell. I'm all for new stuff, but gadgets break...not that a XJ/MJ is perfect...there is just so much more to break with any new technology.

Need Help Finding Some Rims
ParadiseMJ replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looks black from here Maybe "charcoal"? Check the tire/wheel websites...they're out there. -
The welded, bolt-on d-ring brackets...the square ones, really need to be anchored at the bumper mount on weled AND bolted to a heavy steel bumper with tie ins to be safe. I personally would not buy ANY recovery items from Harbor Freight (sorry HF) just too much room for error (and possible death) from less then perfect safety when it comes to yanking a stuck vehicle out of the mud, a ditch, over a cliff etc. You could get away with about $150-$200 to do it right and safe Depends what you think an arm or a head is worth. Just one more example of something not to go cheap on. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-XJ-Cherokee-Front-Rock-Bumper-non-winch-/161150361211?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item25854f5e7b&vxp=mtr Not a bad price on this bumper. I would definitely ask the seller if the d-ring mounts are welded to the bumper mount plate or if the mounts are just gussets...or just welded on the inside to the bumper only. Then the d-rings will run you about $15 to $20 a pop.

Need Help Finding Some Rims

These are close. A little more chrome, but it might narrow down the manufacturer. The hump on the spoke seems similar. http://www.americastire.com/dtcs/findWheelProductCategoryDetailStyl.do?rcz=95926&tp=Truck&st=5+Spoke&tpc=MBMCH5&rc=CNNINT or http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Hw62LEbeL._SY300_.jpg I can't tell if this is photoshopped or what?? http://imageshack.us/a/img12/9941/p1000112k.jpg LOL!! -
If you currently have Jeep type recovery hooks, these mount to the same mounts. You simply remove the hooks themselves, then bolt these in the holes where the hooks just came out of. A nice option in my opinion if you have the $$. http://www.4wheelparts.com/Winches-Winch-Accessories/Universal-D-Ring-Shackle.aspx?t_c=18&t_s=124&t_pt=6073&t_pn=rpp506505&utm_source=google&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=product&emlprox=out&ppcfon=1&gclid=CL-k38Pp6roCFUQ6QgodbyIAXA I believe the price is for one (1).

Factory Oil Pressure Gauge Stuck Past 80Psi
ParadiseMJ replied to 2Comanches's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Renix sender almost always defaults to MAX when it goes bad. I personally would drop the $13 on a new one. -
I never got a decent answer from any parts guys, but the listed MJ filler hose set was unavailable and listed as "not legal for sale in California". I used bulk Marine fuel hoses, made my own. It didn't exactly fit, but it works. The cops never showed up at my house.

The stock injectors are junk after the first 20 years LOL. They are two piece metal/plastic and the seam separates over time. Replacing them with what the parts store will give you will induce some major sticker shock ... $50 EACH. AKA $300 for 6. Wowzers!! A better option is something along these lines: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Year-Warranty-Jeep-Cherokee-Wrangler-4-0L-BOSCH-Upgrade-Fuel-Injector-Set-/281075415650?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4171667a62&vxp=mtr They come with new O-rings too. I replaced the ones in my XJ with these (or very similar to these) and liked them so much I got a set for the MJ. That was 4 years ago. Not a leak or hiccup since. BTW...word to the wise: Do NOT cheap out on a fuel leak, especially directly over a hot exhaust manifold. The result is almost always very bad.

Spare tire winch. The cables tend to rust out after awhile. Long bed to short bed (or vice versa) requires an extra bracket

Thank you. I'll check that out this aft.

Thanks but not really, since the VSS on the AW4 has absolutely "zero" to do with the operation of the speedometer when the speedometer is run solely by a cable. The link, and the location, type of sensor all point to an electronically controlled speedometer. It does not address the VSS that tells the TCU how fast the output shaft on the AW4 is turning. Does that sound right??? The TAN wire

Would it be possible to check the speed sensor and it's input/output information from the plug/connector at the firewall. I'd like to check to see if that particular information is making it UP to that connector. I'd also like to check it up on a jack/block with the engine running, in gear, with the rear wheels rolling and I don't particularly want to lay under the vehicle while that's going on. Any ideas??

This is just Rustoleum Metallic Green...no code...with clear coat. -
When the tank was replaced, were the rollover valves on the top of the tank also replaced? The plastic nipples on the valves do decompose over time and fuel exposure. They're also an added expense...about $50-60...when replacing a fuel tank. The evap lines that go to the charcoal canister "T" together to one line, then they attach to a metal line, that goes up the firewall, and then back in to a rubber hose. So there are 8 connections (valves[2], T [3], rubber to metal, metal to rubber, rubber to canister, that can be broken or just plain not attached. If the PO didn't want to, or didn't KNOW to replace or attach the valves then fuel fumes, or fuel itself will escape/slosh out (especially with a full tank). As said above the filler connection is also suspect. It consists of 2 hoses, one big one, and a 5/8" relief or return hose. Both of them are kind of a PITA to replace or re-attach as they tend to kink up if they're not attached properly. I'd also check the attachment at the fuel filter. The two little rubber hose pieces tend to get overlooked when people change the fuel filter. That generally only appears when the truck is on/running or even just with the key turned to on (the fuel system is pressurized).

'91 Speedometer Issue... Does Not Read
ParadiseMJ replied to neohic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
"Speed Sensor Testing Test the sensor with an ohmmeter. Place the leads of the ohmmeter on the sensor connector. Rotate the output shaft of the transmission. The needle should deflect indicating the switch is opening/closing. as the rotor moves past the sensor (Fig. 40 [you posted Fig 40]). Replace the sensor if the ohmmeter does not display any kind of reading. If a digital ohmmeter is being used, the sensor should generate an ohmmeter reading each time the switch opend and closes." -
I fixed the wiring that I found broken, but found that the wiring I fixed goes from the end of the harness on the tranny, plugs in to the transfer case. It's separate from the VSS. http://www.novak-adapt.com/images/pics/transmissions/aw4_transmission.jpg If you look at this picture, there are 3 "plugs" on the end of the tranny (to the right). One is the VSS, One is the harness adapter, the third goes back to the transfer case (for the dash light?) it's a 94 tranny and case. So the wiring I fixed has no bearing on the VSS. It's nice that it's fixed but it didn't change anything. I'll likely put the thing on a jack this weekend and see if I can test the VSS like Don outlined in the noted post.

No pressure LOL I didn't want to horn in on your thread so I started another one, just asking my specific question. Actually I thought this was an old thread, I found it when I was searching. Watching this hoping we both get our problem sorted out. Thanks
