Ever paint factory aluminum Wheels?
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to mknherhappy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
We painted a factory set of rims on Rebecca's XJ that she ran temporarily until she went to 33's. We just sanded them for about 10 mins each and shot them with some paint. Turned out good and lasted quite well. -
XJ sliders won't fit on the MJ. ;)

Rear sway bar on MJ?
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to Luvtohunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Explain to me why than I can score the EXACT same on a RTI ramp with it connected or disconnected? It was done both ways as well and received the EXACT same score. Everyone argues that they hinder; so we proved with an RTI ramp that it does not. I'd really like to here why you think they hinder articulation on a rear leaf sprung Jeep? You only can go up so far before you hit the bumpstops or you max out the tire in the wheel well and it bumpstops itself. The swaybar does not make a bit of difference in the uptravel hindering how far up you can go. If you want to argue the downtravel I already explained in my prior post that once a leaf pack is at full drop you can't flex it anymore anyways as it's physically unable to. You don't have enough unsprung weight to force the leafs down any further past their normal arch point. So PLEASE explain why a rear swaybar on a leaf sprung Jeep infact does hinder articulation... -
Rear sway bar on MJ?
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to Luvtohunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I wheel my XJ pritty hardcore and the rear swaybar has NEVER hindered me on the trails. Swaybars on leafs do not hinder articulation like they do on coils w/control arms. A leaf pack will only drop so far before it can not be pushed down anymore. Having a swaybar connected to the axle with the proper length endlinks will NOT hinder that drop. With coils on the other hand thats a different story... -
1st off left me get my disclaimer out of the way.... 1) Yes I typically do not talk highly of Rusty's products; however I am in no way putting his company down or him personally down. I personally have not had great success with his products and have owned some that have failed. I also have not had the best customer service when it comes to replacing those failed parts and have been left out to hang. This may be an isolated issue as I know some that have had fantastic results and fantastic customer service experiences. 2) I am only posting this for the simple fact to put an awareness in those who are running Rusty's trackbars. 3) Once again I am not trying to talk bad about Rusty's as a company or him personally; I just want to re-iterate that fact. I recently posted on GLXJ about the known Rusty's trackbar failure on the TRE end. The post talked about the known issue with the Rusty's tracbar and showed a result of what could happen if/when it does fail (totaled Jeep). Here is a link to that thread. http://greatlakesxj.activeboard.com/ind ... D=17199270 Well if that thread isn't enough to make you want to go rip off your Rusty's trackbar... I received a picture message last Wednesday night from a local friend who was also running the Rusty's trackbar. Here is the photo; I will let the photo speak for itself. I do appologize for the quality of the photo. It was at night with a low quality camera on a phone. Many are aware of the known issue with the TRE failure on the Rusty's product; but this is the first time I've seen it actually fail on the other end. I will note that Dan was not injured when it failed; luckly he was only going about 5mph when it broke. He's lucky it broke where it did; as he was about 2 mins from hitting the highway where he would of been traveling 60+ MPH. I will also note that he does not wheel his rig but only about 1 time a year tops and it's just VERY mild trail use. He drives it daily about 10 miles back and forth to work. So he's not abused it. I'll let you draw your own conclusions from here on....

lwb lift MJ lean to ds front
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to Cabz's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You think Rusty's actually put that much effort into them? Back in the day I had a set of Rusty's 4.5" coils on my XJ and had the same issue after a few season's for wheeling. I swapped them from side to side and had the same result's on the other side. I've had my issues' with Rusty's parts; but won't go into that here.... ;) -
Does anyone happen to know the INSIDE diameter of the Dana 30's? Not looking for the outside, but rather the inside towards the outer ends. Don't really want to go threw all the work to pull a shaft if someone knows. Thanks in advance! :D

WHich 4.5 Lift to choose
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to fatcat0491's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
And ADJUSTABLE lower control arms vs. non-adjustable. Plus new brake lines not just extensions. -
I don't want to ruin what you've gotten started but I will give my penny and a half worth... With the vast amount of lift and tire combo's you've got a lot of work ahead of you. Than not to mention people who are running without flares/trimmed. Think about it just for a 31" tire size. 31's fit with no lift 31's fit with no lift and no flares 31's fit with 1" Budget Boost 31's fit with 1" Budget Boost and no flares 31's fit with 1.5" Budget Boost 31's fit with 1.5" Budget Boost and no flares 31's fit with 2" Budget Boost 31's fit with 2" Budget Boost and no flares 31's fit with 3.5" Lift 31's fit with 3.5" Lift and no flares 31's fit with 4.5" Lift 31's fit with 4.5" Lift and no flares 31's fit with 6.5" Lift 31's fit with 6.5" Lift and no flares So right there is 14 SEPARATE pics for just a 31" tire. Multiply that by the list of tires you have and we're looking at several hundred photo's with different combo's. My vote goes for setting a standard as far as how the photo is taken (side shot on level ground) and than having the user state what they have. For example. Year & Model: (LWB vs. SWB, Metric Ton vs. Standard) Lift height: (Listed Lift Height & Actual Height you got, plus the brand) Shocks: (Brand or part # or what height lift they are made for) Tire size: (Listed & Actual) Wheel Size & Backspacing: (Width, Diameter, and BS) Pro's and Con's: (what you like/dislike about the current setup your running) Notes: (Add a short description as if trimming was needed how much. Please remember to include other details that may be important such as SYE's, bumpstop extensions & if it rubs, but try to keep it as short as possible.) This way someone can see a photo and say "hey I like the looks of that" and than know exactly what lift/tires/wheels etc. the person is running. PLUS not all 3" lifts are created equal. One 3" lift may only lift 2.5" and another 3" lift may lift 3.5". You posting a photo of a "3" lift" is somewhat irrelevant without stating the manufacture etc. Plus doing it this way allows the user to give me details about the lift they are running (SOA vs. Leaf Pack) etc. Like I said just my penny and a half worth; take it for what it's worth...

Crane Heavy Duty 8.25" Diff Cover

OK, officially the Flex thread, Post your flex shots!
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to MiNi Beast's topic in The Pub
Don't laugh to hard, I'm running 4.5" shocks on a 6.5" lift. 6.5" and 35's. And since you started with an XJ I'll post our XJ's as well. My XJ with 5" and 35's. (don't ask the story behind this one, yes I'm stuck!) Wife's XJ with 3.5" and 31's. -
Here is a recent thread about it on GLXJ as the same subject recently came up. http://greatlakesxj.activeboard.com/ind ... D=17770234 I run the TJ flares on the rear of my MJ and I have to say it was the most annoying/frustrating part of my build. They are a PAIN to get them to look decent. Lots of trimming on the flare itself and they don't like to contour the body of the MJ rear very good. As for trimming, I did the same thing we do when we trim on the XJ's, I cut and fold. Let me see if I can dig up some pics.... Before (you can see it's been folded over itself). After (I only ran them to cover up the rust hole shown above.) I had planned on running rear TJ flares on the front but after so much cussing at doing the rears I decided I could deal with the factory flares for awhile. Maybe I'll get to doing them one of these days...

Or put the specs of your rig in your signature...

Well I was so happy with the results from the front bar I splurged and ended up ordering the XJ rear bar as well from Motion. Rebecca's XJ never had a rear bar on it since we got it and it's always been a bit "rear end loose". Figured it would help tighten up the suspension on the road. http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index. ... rers_id=69 Here's a pic of the bar. Will post install pics when I've got some free time to get it installed.

Guess what showed up today. My new Crane 8.25" diff cover for Rebecca's XJ! It's the only heavy duty Chrysler 8.25" cover for the XJ's that I know exist. These things are beefy! Also like the design as it's lip-less and won't get hung up on anything. You can get them from Motion Offroad; http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index. ... rers_id=70 Oh, and yeah I also ordered a matching Dana 30 cover for the front. :D Will probably re-paint them as the green doesn't go to well with our current color scheme.

What size lift is this>> with pics
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to twojeeps's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If those are 31's I'm going to guess it's the 3" lift. Here is an old (very very old) pic of my XJ with the RC 4.5" lift with 31's on it. Notice the distance from the top of the tire to the fender flare is larger than in your pic. Man oh man how my XJ's changed... :D -
I run the BRX hoses on my XJ. http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index. ... cts_id=140

Mrsimon's First Mj Project (Tube Bed Page 7)

Any updates? -
Myself and the wife didn't end up going (1st GLXJ event we've missed in 3 years) as we have a newborn (he was 4 weeks old last weekend). With the price of gas and the fact Caleb was 4 weeks old we decided it wasn't the best option to go wheeling for the weekend; even though we really wanted to. Non the less, some photo's of this event are on the GLXJ forum.

do I have to drain diff?
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW replied to maddzz1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No -
WD40 and a rag usually does the trick.
-
If thats the same one that was at Andy Mohr Ford in Indy I'd stay away from it. It had been wrecked at somepoint and the damage was noticeable under the hood. I'm assuming thats why the front bumper is red...
-
I agree 220%! Sucks even more busting your knuckle's on the stupid metal fan!

You guys... 33's fit with 3.5" coils as seen here. :D (wife's DD) OR 35's fit with 5" coil as seen here. :D
