    It started when I answered the following CL ad. http://pueblo.craigslist.org/cto/1918566943.html She wanted $950. I offered $400. She said no. Saw this sitting along side of house. Fortunetely I have a couple bumpers and tail gates. 88MJ, 2.5, 4spd, 2WD. Asked if it was for sale. Told 'no way' Was DD. Would go back once a week and dicker. To no avail. Yesterday I said 'no more, gonna settle this.' A hour of BS, Swapped a couple war stories, killed a couple 6packs and I got 'em both. $500. Drove the MJ home. Ran great.
  3. If caught in time there will be no damage. If not replaced and the the motor allowed to keep running, it can score the journal to a point where it can't be ground to specs, making scrap out of the crank. Or it can beat the rod to a point where it breaks, sending broken parts thru the oilpan, engine block and snapping the crank and camshaft. If the bearings are worn and the journals are OK, then replacing them will give you several more miles service. That's what mikes are for.
  4. Parking light. Same thing. Double element bulb in one socket. There is also the possibility you have a AC electron running around in your DC circuit.
  5. Only thing I can think of of is EGR. Feeding a small amount of exhaust back into the engine. Meant to reduce emissions. Shouldn't hurt engine performance without it. Only worry would be emissions inspection.

  8. "64 Cheyenne"]The front turn signal sockets are crap on our MJs. You got that right. I've seen sockets so bad no way to salvage them. Rust and corrosion. Just cut 'em out and install new ones.
  9. Generally a problem like you describe is in the secondary, Hi Voltage circuit. On a real dark night, or if you have a light proof garage where you can be in the dark do this. Raise the hood. Start the engine. Now look under the hood. Often times a person is amazed at the 'light show' being displayed. Clean the engine good remove all oil film. Make sure engine is dry. Get a spray can of clear plastic. Spray every every electrical item under the hood concentrating on plugs, coil and distributer. Don't get inside the alternator. Had a 1962 Austin Healy 3000 was like that. Didn't have to rain. Just a heavy dew and it wouldn't start. After treating it as described above and repeating every 4-5 months never had any more trouble .
  10. After checking what data I have on Jeep Comanche's I have come to the conclusion there is no sure fire way to identify them. The badges and decals can be added or removed at the whim of the owner. The mechanical parts can be added, or removed, at the option of the dealer or owner. Some sure fire facts; The Metric Tonne did not come out until 1987. In 1990 the name was changed to Big Ton. MT's only came with the 7ft beds, Dana 44 and 4.0l engines. The fourth digit of the VIN may be 'H' signifying 6,000GVW. The safety label on the drivers door, witch is usually unreadable will give a GAWR of 3130lbs. In my opinion the safety label is the most accurate indication. Then there is the possibility that somebody swapped doors. If your lucky you might find the build sheet inside the left hand door panel. And maybe the code sheet glued to the bottom of the glove box, where it gets worn and unreadable. Exports are a entirely different breed as they had their own rules and every ones is different.
  11. OK. Using the procedure I mentioned above get a measurement. If it's .015 it's right on the max limit for boring to .030. Also from the looks of it, a common thimble mike should should work just fine.
  12. Suggestion. Take a piston ring and push it into the bore. Place it over the worst looking spot. With a light under the cylinder you can see the score better. Find something you can slip under the ring and in the score. Piano wire would be great but not many people has access. Cut a 1/4 wide strip off one side of a .005 feeler gauge. See if it will fit. Don't want to cut up a feeler gauge? Use a strip of paper. Thread will do. Just get something that will fit snug. Then you can remove it and measure it. If the score is .005 or less, don't worry about it. Over that, bore it.
  13. This is going to be very interesting and before anybody starts 'correcting' me wait until tomorrow morn when I can check VIN'S. The springs shown came off a 1987 MJ with Metric ton markings and tags on tail gate. That axle is a D44. I have a '88MJ sitting on one side of it with identical springs and D35. I have a '89 sitting on the other side with almost identical springs, 4 long leafs and one short thick one on the bottom. No MT marking on truck. Axle is a D60 so obviously it's been switched. Just gotta love them Jeeps.

  16. If the score isn't big enough to measure don't worry about it.
  17. Get the kit and do it yourself. If you screw up you only lose $20 but got a learning experience. Priced a college degree lately? I quit using NAPA because of their failure to honor their warranty.I've had good luck with Autozone and recommend them.
  18. The difference between a compression check and a leak down test. A compression check tells how much pressure the cylinder is producing but not how sealed it is. A leak down test will.
  19. Yes it would. A experienced mechanic can accurately measure a cylinder using a bore gauge or inside mike. An inexperienced user has trouble keeping the gauge 'straight' that is at right angles to the cyl wall. One way to help is to take one of the piston rings removed from a piston removed from the engine. Place it inside the cyl. Now take the piston and turn it upside down and push the ring into the bore. Using the ring for reference now measure with the gauge. Do this in at least 3 places, directly under the ridge, at the bottom of the ring wear area and in between the 2. This also a good way to measure the bore. Place the ring where you want it. Then use a feeler gauge to measure the end gap of the ring. Do this in at least 3 places. First tho make sure the bore is clean and carbon free.

  24. You use cardboard or wood boxes? Be interested in a couple genuine Cuban red cedar boxes? Without the cigars. I already enjoyed them. Also have some Honduran wooden boxes.
