Electrical system with aux. lighting
RustyRodder posted a topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Evening guys, So the other night over some drinks, my cousin and I were talking about our cars and whatnot. My jeep came up, and my auxiliary lighting setup shortly after. Followed imediately by the question- will my charging system be up for it? I know the standard comanche alternator is 75A, but that you can do the GM upgrade to 105A easily. My lighting setup has two KC 69's (100W with a 40amp relay), two spotlights (100W and an 8.5A draw), and twin 50W lights on the rear. While I doubt I will run them all at once, how badly am I screwing the pooch here? Any advice on what I could do to improve it, other than the 105 alternator and cable upgrades? -
Might cost, but I know a few shops that will give a car a onceover before buying for potential issues. Perhaps get it done on that before a 3,000 mile trip? Going through some of the desolate areas, a small gas can wouldnt hurt. Or a full size spare.

Welcome!! Any plans to fix the bumped side?

Freebie....... '64 Dodge 440
RustyRodder replied to yellaheep's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
That thing is bitchin!! Love it. There is something about old sedans that make them cool- theres a 71 chevelle more-door around here for sale. Has a 454 and procharger on it, though. -
I am jealous of you longbed guys- I found a shortbed that was exactly what I wanted options wise. But Sadly, I don't think the tailgate will go up with a bike or two in the back.

But I don't know if thats a guarantee- my MJ was just painted LJ1 sand sahara beige, a 1992 wrangler color. Paint was listed as an AMC color.

I was lucky enough to vacation there a couple years back- rented a jeep for a few trails. Really cool area!! I can't wait to take my MJ out there- even if it isnt 4wd

That would be great! Thanks!

I don't see a rear O2

Interesting. Mine is full vinyl, always wondered about that

Anyone have those stupid safety hammers in their cars?

Why were you hitting on the edges, where it had the most support/strength? -
MJ bench and bucket brackets are NOT the same.

Haha, Man, I hate you!! I nearly bought that same one- Woodstock, right? I think its a local thing, judging on your bads... Mine also came from Woodstock. Here it is when I got it- Seems like cheap front fogs, rattlecanning black, and hacking off the exhaust is a thing in that town (mine also lacks a muffler. Fulle OE system waiting to go on). Wonder if we bought from the same guy? -
Wooden block lift is no joke... a F250 around here used a pair of 4x4 fence post on its springs to get a big lift. Looked like it was going to give way any minute!

You never know. I tried to buy my 88 twice. First time, it was in almost all original paint. Guy listed it, I tried calling over 3 days, had a friend who was local call, no response. 3 months later its up for sale again, spraybombed (same guy owned it) and I bought it 3 day later. Then with trucks since then, its "oh, I can't take any more photos", "its pending sale" (still for sale a month later), and "It runs great! Just needs a starter, battery, and clutch". hell, buyers can be total dumbasses- friend is selling a TJ in order to get a new MJ. needs a motor, first guy sends him an offer (not unreasonable), friend offered to meet between. his response? "I can't spend any more, thats all I have and I need a car today!". So he wanted a jeep that needed a motor. What.

No mounts- I figure Ill bend some out of flat stock. I am almost going to feel bad modifying this! Almost. I have a picture of factory ones, but I don't know how to do attachments.

Ever notice that every time you are looking for something, it always pops up when you give up? I've been searching for a SWB Rollbar for more than a few months- no luck. Finally gave up, and bought a Ranger bar to make fit my '88. Wouldn't you know it, a week later I get a message from a guy who just decided to sell his factory bar. So guess what is in the barn now. Anyone want the Ranger bar? Now the hard part- adapting the new spotlights to fit this one! Its in good shape- one spot of rust, nothing a wirewheel, some sanding, and a new coat of paint won't fix.

Switch panel placement on dash
RustyRodder replied to RustyRodder's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sadly the clock pod is already taken, or else I would do that -
Where do you guys recommend placing a control panel on the dash? I need to find a place for 2 of these buggers- Right now, I can only think of the lower left of the gauge bezel, or make a filler panel by the glovebox to be placed there. Anyone have an alternative? Its about 3" across, 2" high

Wait for a 4.0 or even 2.5 over the 2.8- its worthless, unless you stick in a 3.4 instead. -
Why not? I have 3 toy-cars, and all of them do different things. no reason to make 1 miserable DD that doesnt do any 1 thing particularly well.

Look down south for sure. I paid 925 for mine (Even had working AC), and there isnt a spot of rust on it (I have pictures from paint stripped to bare metal to prove that!). Fly & Drive!

Rollbar measurments/photos
RustyRodder replied to RustyRodder's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just holds up a few lights- trying to keep it OE appearing, or else I would just make a square-tube headache rack. Its true you never can find things when you need them- last summer, there were Ranger and S10 bars galore around me. Last 3 moths? nothin.
