Project “Tomahawk”

Yeah, along the same lines as what I followed/did. I too have been looking into the benefits of catch cans, all three of my LS rigs need them lol -

If you can rotate or replace that throttle body with a less intrusive style one, you can spin the PS resi, and run a 4'' intake tube around it like I did in my MJ -

Wow, still pretty close even with the clearances made -

Very nice, so sounds like it should go together rather quickly, all parts acquired just the labor of the build left? Can't wait to see this truck on the road. -

Will be curious of your take on those tube seals, more often than not its been found they just trap moisture and dirt inside without a way for it to escape. But...those people arent as meticulous and caring as you are with this build, so your results may be better. All in all, it looks to really be coming together. Whats next? -
I started to get into a lowered street truck build. See the link: 1988 MJ Eliminator Street Truck AWD, LS, AX15 It has some good info on lowering, AWD, Disc brake, etc. for @WAEMID IV Glad to see you getting into an MJ on the site, been following your youtube adventures for years.

Nice truck, should be a fun build. @Pete M On another note, this should get moved into the projects...doesnt really seem like it needs to be in the registry.

Looks great, how did you clean the tubes so well? Should sleeve the axle while its at this point, will be as robust as can be at that point -
Having been born in '98, it feels like home to me LOL All jokes aside, I tend to really like 95-05 era of vehicles, modern enough to have ECU's and functional electronics, but not new enough to be overdone and overcomplicated. A lot of simple and effective systems in these cars. My Denali, being a 2012 is about the newest vehicle Ill own for likely awhile, still a gen 4 LS, robust 6 speed, all the newer stuff across all mfr's have a big issue one place or another.

Yeah, that aligns with what i've read/heard too. The original engine up and quit 10k miles ago, so this has a fresh long block with some goodies already. Hoping its good for the life of the car now!
-
Yeah some parts definitely are that way...If it came down to it, I would hope rebuidling items like a MC or anything mechanical wouldnt be too hard.
-
Yep, it's still an LS1 block and heads but completely gone thru, supposedly has over 400whp. Definitely a healthy car especially for daily driving. It seems to be good so far!

Had a freeze the last couple weeks...today was the first day in the 50's in nearly a month...so of course I had to pull the Comanche out. Then it doubled as a leaning post LOL Been working on my new toy lately, a 2004 GTO I am setting up for autocross and daily driving. Has a nice built LS, 6 Speed and LSD so its a fun driver. Still planning to work on the Comanche big time in 2025, but the car needs TLC done first so it can just be a cruiser and not require my attention as much since the MJ needs it.

Looks great, did you get behind those engine mounts?? Also, don't forget to do your first scratch, so it can be over with and you can move on mentally lol -

Whats your plan with the Dana 44? AFAIK, the D44 combo with a Non-Disco D30 would mean NP242...It's how my waggy is. It would also be the only Non-disco High pinion D30 with the 89 and down knuckles/unit bearings....meaning a BBK is an easy mod to it. They are kind of a rare bird axle since its a weird combo. Would be worth the grab if its easy and cheap enough. -

My Denali Sierra has an engine oil cooler in the factory coolant radiator. (L9H engine, would assume other similair NNBS trucks and SUV's come this way as it was a factory option for all of them) Has a separate trans cooler, separate steering cooler. -

This was my plan...only until I figured out the headers I have leave absolutely no room for the Oil line adapter. That, and the fact I read that oil needs be hit 212* on occasion at least to burn off any water, or other potential contaminants and it was hard to do with a big oil cooler like the one pictured. Also heard rumors about it lowering oil pressure...ended up just abandoning the idea as most LS vehicles didnt come with an oil cooler from GM to begin with... -

Totally makes sense....I admittedly went a little on the large side with my LS3 (stage 3 cam) in the comanche, it doesnt have much go below 3K RPM, but above 3K it is like having two engines lol The LS1 in my GTO has a stage 2 cam, and its great for a car, not that I would want it in a jeep. My Denali, has a Stage 1 cammed LS3 build, and it is great for daily driving...if I do anymore off road LS builds, itll be a stage 1 LS3 build. Maybe I missed it, are ya doing all the engine oil upgrades? New pump, o-ring, barbell, etc...? -

Looking good! Decide on any engine upgrades? -
I'm sure it has to do with the 3.07:1 axle ratio, but also the fact these are newer, nicer quality tires....As I drive it more, the second gear pulls are getting more and more manageable to stay in throttle and not spin. Which is nice. First gear I fear will never hold traction. I spent some time cleaning the truck in the hour of sunshine I had left on my last vacation day of 2024. Was a good year for the Comanche, better than the last few for sure, it got some good road miles, a lot of quirks worked out, and definitely some fun. 2025 I want to get it 4x4 again, I have most of the parts, just need funds to come together (typical holidays) and that project will be underway. The 4x4 build will consist of: -All new front suspension, links, crossmember, braces etc. -All new steering links, swingers, mounts etc. -Front TTB rebuild (bushings, seals, brakes, etc) -Front TTB LSD Carrier (since its an NP242 rig, having a non locking front diff will be fun in the snow) -Front TTB 4.56 Gears I'm unsure about keeping the stock D44 Rear, its done fine so far, and with some beefing up it would likely live. -Rear Selectable locker or Detroit locker -Rear Chromoly axle shafts -Rear Disc Brakes -Rear 4.56 Gears -Rear seals/bearings etc. Its a costly next step, but is doable in 2025. Also tossing the idea around of changing the color, perhaps going white.
-
Bright side...Definitely looks fixable. Shame it has a title mark now, but not the end of the world. There are also ways to amend that. If you can't find a good front section near you (for a cut and replace) I have access to a parts XJ with a good front frame section. Will be glad to see this one on the road again, maybe use some of the funds for some upgrades! (I did when I rebuilt my truck that got totaled in March)

I had a buddy contact quickdraw to ask about cutting the bellhousing...and in a roundabout way, the quickdraw guys say cut it out, and no need to plate unless you desire, if you just cut a small window, he claims itll still be strong enough for what we are doing. Luckily, I didnt have to cut mine and thus a non issue
