    Start with shocks…on my rig, no wheel hop at all with all stock leaf’s, and shackles, just nice shocks. Thats with 35’s and plenty of power to make it hop if it was going to.

    Spent a lot of time this weekend racking my brain, measuring, re measuring, doubting, measuring and drawing lol. My brain is fried but I have the Crossmember about ready to try cutting for the first time. It has clearance for the axles, shafts, LS oil pan…everything seems happy in CAD. Whether that’s true in the real world we will find out this week.

    Just a sneak peak of the mockup stage. Lots of measuring to take place before having the crossmember plasma cut

    Got the knuckles loosely together, just enough to use for mock up, and got the TTB’s primed. Just waiting on ball joints to get the beams sitting in the air beneath the jeep to confirm all my measurements before sending the files to be cut next week.

    Been racking my brain the past few days redoing the crossmember design, for the third time lol. Each time I do it I feel there are better ways to do certain things. I also ordered up the pivot bushings, ball joints, and wheel bearings so I can start double checking dimensions before sending the crossmember files out to be cut. The crossmember is mostly entirely boxed and internally braces. It is bolt-in, but that is mostly only for locating as it will be final welded in once everything is kosher.

    Got started on the new front end. Have to figure out the wheel centerline, to begin fabricating the front crossmember. Lots of things to do one after another.

    Okay, we’re about at the point where the stripping of old stuff is complete. Both sides are cleaned up.

    Got one side cleaned up. Lots of grinding dust lol. Also got the fenders and grill off.

    A couple reasons, first, the new front WMS will be 65’’ instead of the previous 69’’ Second, it will now be on narrow 4x4 trails and not wide open desert, so more robust fenders will be needed. Going to go with Rusty’s new High clearance flares. Admittedly not mush of the factory fender sheet metal will be used, but is it just enough to mount those flares.

    So, had to pull the engine on my daily driver as it had a rocker arm come apart, and leaked from every orifice so killed a few birds at once. Got the freshened up LS3 in that. See the Denali’s build thread in my signature if you are interested in seeing that. Anyways, back to the Comanche. As it lies, the front end is floating. I am going to order up some bushings and ball joints so I can get the beam crossmember designed and made. More details to come, just want to get this post to update and show the current state of things. Separate from the TTB swap, I will likely be doing 97+ windows (if not 97+ complete doors), also removing the front Fiberglass flares and going back to factory steel with more “crawler” style steel flares.

    You could see about renting a TURO in your area, some times there are one-ton trucks to rent, but you might see they have limited mileage ranges and whatnot. I'm a little confused, you need to go to SC from TX to get your trailer to TX?

    Might just find an s-10 or ranger kit and make it work.

    When I was researching load helpers for my Sierra, I saw these. The thing I don’t care for with these is it adds more items that will wear out/squeak, or rust. Airbags are simpler, andjustable and are a pretty sound design, many thousands if not millions of airbags cruise our highways every single day. Not to mention, your truck is already setup for airbags. Another thought to consider is doing a helper spring like the one ton trucks do, that is not active unless a load is compressing the standard spring pack a certain amount. Simple and effective, trouble free too.

    Putting the Comanche on hold for a few weeks, my daily driver need an engine R&R that I’m handling. Will be back to this as soon as possible.

    Well, life has been crazy the last few weeks. I spent some time getting the old front suspensions and steering out from under the Jeep. It is a hovercraft again. Over the course of summer I will be getting the new front suspension & steering designed & installed.

    How did you determine its bad? Also curious what PS pump you ran? The LS pumps are generally Saginaw series II (or P-series) but they have different flow/pressure for truck and car applications. I run the Car pump, with a 1.5:1 steering ratio and mine does well…original 250K miles box on mine.

    That means mine could be around the 3k area….very little sheet metal left with the same drivetrain as you. Crazy. Stoked for you to enjoy your truck

    Sure am, doesn’t mind the 35’s at all, especially with the correct gearing now. I could definitely tell the drivetrain was under more more stress with 3.07 gears, seems like the 4.88 gears really woke it up.

    Okay, so update time. The Hubs and adapters needed a little work to get installed. The machine fit of the adapters were too tight of a tolerance for the hubs as-is. The hubs were either a little crusty or a little out of round and needed a kiss on the lathe to get back to perfectly round. But now everything fits together with a nice “clunk” and is solid. The wheels fit the adapters and hubs perfectly. I had to trim down the rear axle lug studs to fit behind the wheel mount face, as the wheels don’t have the pockets machined that some wheels come with. I still need to finish bleeding the rear brake bypass line, but it stops for now, pretty smoothly I will say. The rear axle width makes it look not so awkward as it used to with the stock width Dana 44. First and second gear are completely useless, anymore than 1/4 throttle it just blows the tires off.
