  1. I have an MJ with the RK 3 link and an MJ with the Clayton 3 link sitting at the shop. The RK stuff may work ok but it cannot be described as "stout as hell" when compared to other systems. The arms are smaller, joints are smaller, arms are also alot shorter then the clayton. The RK uses a bracket on each side in front of the stock crossmember where clayton replaces the entire crossmember with one with integrated mounts.
  2. IMO, anyone capable of correctly doing the gear swap is gonna be able to tell you what you have and what to buy.
  3. I would beef up that section of frame rail with at least 3/16" plate then build off of that. Wonder if everything sits further back on the diesel, I would have expected the arms to want to mount just behind the crossmember.
  4. Ive got the Canyons on my XJ, they are nice for a factory wheel.
  5. Problem is that on a 4.0l rig the crossmember sits further back so the arms will probably be too long unless you mount them were the 4.0l crossmember would have gone or shorten the arms. You could plate the frame and weld mounts on,Rock Krawler mounts their arms kinda like that with the stock crossmember. Only difference is their kit puts the arms in front of the crossmember and yours would need to be behind it.
  6. Besides if you have an 86 MJ as your screenname implys the Clayton crossmember would probably require modification to work anyway. You will also probably find that the arms are too long to work with your current crossmembers location.
  7. The clayton crossmember is petty simple, should be easy to duplicate
  8. If I remember I will see about getting dimensions, I also made a template. The main shape is just the box tube, I bent the pie cut areas with a makeshift brake in my shop press but there is no reason you couldnt do it without one.
  9. Today I pulled the engine apart, I have always had a hunch that my engine had been rebuilt today I confirmed it. The head is in excellent shape and has a rebuilders tab on it,when I lifted off the cyl bead I was greeted by a newish looking set of 0.060 pistons. I also got the AX15 ready to mock up. I changed it to Wrangler clocking, this will let me use a wrangler shifter which IMO is better then the stock one, it will also help with belly clearence a little. Overall it was a fairly productive weekend, ive decided to do a majority of the build in my garage rather then at the shop so its going a little slower then it should.
  10. I will have to think about reproducing them. If you have a welder and a cut off wheel you can easily make one, its basically a piece of box tube that I sliced in half making a channel, I then did a few pie cuts and bent up the basic shape. After that its just fitting to your specific axle.
  11. ↑ This. You should never order a shock based on your lift height.
  12. Got some more done tonight. pulled the TBI and stock manifolds off, also got the exhaust system removed and pulled the AX4 and 231. With the trans out of the way I can mock up the AX15 and start building a crossmember.
  13. Got the hood off, started dropping the trans tonight. Not much but I'm happy to be finally working on the MJ rather then just collecting parts.
  14. I was gonna do it on my 89, I bought a GMC Jimmy that I gutted for all the parts. In the end I decided to hop up my 2.5l some more, I figure if the 2.5l comes out I will put in a V8. I'm putting the 4.3l,700r4,231c combo in my buddies Wrangler. The swap doesnt look too bad but unless you have deep pockets you will have to do alot of fabrication. If you do some searching on the web there are a few writeups on putting the 4.3l in an XJ, this will give you a pretty good idea what you would be getting into.
  15. Just looked at a pic. ive got a buddy the that runs the RE set up, guess I never noticed how the arms mount. Good to know there is an option for the 4cyls.
  16. Nice, so get some custom length arms and you will be good to go.
  17. As long as you only did their radius arms I think it would work. Their 3 link would interfere with the T case.
  18. Looks like mine except mine has another hole just behind the crossmember directly below the cab support where the 4.0l crossmember would mount.
  19. I've been keeping an eye on the rust for the last few years,I was waiting till I had another reason to tear everything out. I have all the tools to make replacement floor panels, so it should be an easy fix. I will be reworking parts of the floor anyway to accommodate different shifters and to maximize control arm separation on the 3 link suspension.
  20. I pulled the interior out, the rubber mat and padding must have weighed 75lbs with all the water in it. Looks like I have some work to do although it does look worse then it actually is, I'm sure the rust belt guys would be happy to find this.
  21. Flexed the old set up one last time so I could pressure wash under the truck.
  22. Personally I wouldnt bother with the TJ axle. non cad D30s are cheap, just buy one and toss the TJ shafts in it if it doesnt already have the bigger joints.
  23. I did some more checking and measuring, the AX15 would help move everything back a couple inches but not as much as I initially thought. It will help me a little with my project but I'm not sure how much it will help with bolt on options.
  24. Ya, I didnt realize how different the AX4/5 and AX15 trucks were till I started measuring and comparing my MJ to the other MJs I have at the shop. I will definitely come out ahead by doing the transmission swap first.
