If you have a compressor, just use an HVLP gun. I'm going to guess that since you are considering rattle can that paint quality isn't super important, in that case you can go with Rustoleum or some other cheap equipment enamel, a $8-$10 quart of paint equals about the same amount of paint as a case of rattle cans, a can of spray paint only contains a few ounces of actual paint. You can get some automotive paint reducer or go cheap and use acetone from the hardware store to thin it, you could also add a can of hardener if you wanted for $10-$20 but that's optional. An HVLP gun is going to lay down paint much nicer and coat way better than spray paint, you can buy a cheap HVLP gun for $15-$20 if you don't have one, for a budget paint job the cheap HVLP guns will do ok, many are knock offs of Sata or other higher end spray guns. You can pull of a decent budget paint job for less than spray paint or spend a little more and step up the quality from there, you could even get into some lower end single stage automotive paints without spending a lot.

Front Leaf Spring Conversion
mnkyboy replied to FancyManche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Originally it had shackles out front which really killed the approach angle, the shackles were removed and the sliders were added to the rear of the front springs, the sliders tightened up the front end and made a night & day difference in handling over the shackle set up, the approach angle was better but still much worse than a linked rig would be. The rear axle was still running shackles. -
Front Leaf Spring Conversion
mnkyboy replied to FancyManche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The one i put together is on 3/4 ton Ford axles, it has YJ leaf packs set up SOA up front, we used liquid iron slider boxes instead of shackles. I wouldn't recommend the swap, the one i did drives very well for what it is but can't be compared to the performance of a link set up, wasn't really any cheaper than links either. -
4BT stock has 70-80 less HP than a 4.0l and only about 40 ft lbs more torque even at low rpm. Being around 270lbs heavier than a 4.0l seems to me would be the bigger issue for an MJ than the power would be. Personally I'm not into diesel swaps, but if i did one i would be looking for something a bit lighter than a 4BT.

I haven't done the CPS, but i run a 95 distributor on my 91 harness. I simply swapped connectors, the 95 cam sensor worked fine with the 91 ECM. I would suspect that the CPS would work too, maybe i will see if i can find the old 95 CPS that came with my injection set up and try it.

I know they are the same, the newer ones just have more bolts with studs to mount things to. IIRC, the earlier engines have two bolts with studs on top and the later ones have 5 or so with them.
-
Up till about 86 they used 7/16" head bolts, after that the 2.5l got 1/2" head bolts. Any 1/2" bolt set for an, MJ,XJ,YJ,TJ, or 96 up Dakota will work, i believe on 96 and up 2.5ls the number of bolts with studs on them increased, but otherwise they should be the same.

I was concerned about it when i put it on there,i even had a stock flywheel on hand in case i hated it. I was actually surprised how little i notice it on the road, even with the naturally aspirated engine it wasn't bad. Even with the inertia ring, it still accelerates much faster than my 4.0l XJ does.
-
No, mine was a one off custom made by a guy on 4bangerJP. It looks very similar to the Tri county gear one, but i believe mine's about a 1/2lb heavier.

I haven't seen anyone running one on a 4.0l, i have one on my 2.5l but as far as i know I might be the only one in the group that has one in an MJ. It does make a difference on the 4banger though.

Looking at the harness it looks like the C101 only runs stuff on the engine harness and although the ECM is under the dash it is still just part of the engine harness, so the XJ engine harness should take care of all of that. I guess what i need to do is look at the pinouts where the engine harness plugs into the dash harness behind the fuse panel to see if they match up. I typically swap the engine & dash harnesses as a set, but these harnesses being the same years has me wondering. As unlikely as it is that they will play nice together, it would be nice to not have to swap the dash harness or do the rear harness splice.
-
Getting ready to swap the harness on the boys MJ project, we have a 1990 MJ donor, i would prefer the 1990 harness but due to some previous owners the harness is a major rats nest. I also have a 1987 4.0l XJ harness that i could splice in, but the MJ is a 1987 2.5l so both are the early harness with the C101. What I'm wondering is if the 87 XJ engine harness would be plug and play with the 87 MJ dash harness, or if it would be best to just swap it all and splice the MJ rear harness into the XJ engine and dash harnesses.

Got home from work today and found the boy going to town on the donor rig, he's slowly making progress.

I had been using an AW4 trans cooler for a power steering cooler but it gave up on me at Naches last year, since then it has been jumped out. I picked up a new cooler months ago but finally got around to installing it, it's pretty crowded behind the grill so I'm going to try under the hood. I made a mount, just need to get some hose and tie it into the system.- 798 replies

Since i put the supercharger on I've fought with belt squeals, especially when things get wet. Over time I've changed things around and got it down to just the alternator slipping, today i added some more idlers to get better contact on the alternator, seems to have worked. The belt is silent now, i even soaked it with the garden hose and didn't get a peep out of it.- 798 replies

I was looking at old pics and found one of the contents of my bed, It's amazing that the 4banger can burn out at all with all that weight back there. There's also a bunch of recovery gear behind the seats, it's got me wondering how much the truck weighs.- 798 replies
