  1. The actual wiper switch is in the column, and they are different for tilt and non-tilt. And they are expensive. I have a non-tilt delay wiper switch pulled from a junkyard MJ. They are actually rare. I can post a pic tomorrow. It was a huge pain to get out of the column. Edit: If you have a manual trans, I think it would actually be easier to swap the entire steering column from an intermittent wiper equipped XJ, instead of finding and swapping out the switch. If you have column shift auto, no other option but to change the switch.
  2. For those that read this post this far, the pitman arm nut is 1 5/16". I pulled a 97 ZJ box from the local yard, left the pitman arm on it as they didn't charge extra for it. Part number P52088488AB came up on a google search as 98 ZJ, Rockauto cross referenced to Cardone 277560, which says it fits a bunch of vehicles, some which I suspect didn't have the fast ratio. Cardone specs says "Total turns lock to lock- 3 to 3.5". Box is 3 turns lock to lock.
  3. Just noticed something odd. The diagram shows THREE mounting brackets on the rear carpet (#6). No rear carpet I have ever seen has three mount points, only the middle and pass side. Hmm.
  4. Did you install new carpet? I ask because the rear carpet panel mounting brackets should be under the rear carpet. They are covered by lift up flaps in the original carpet. See my pics above. Even my factory vinyl floor cover has the flaps to access the rear carpet panel mounting points.
  5. My 91 with bench seat did not have the rear carpet (I added it from a jy MJ). It's a SporTruck, so pretty basic, 4.0, auto, AC were about the only options. Didn't even have a factory radio. Maybe the rear carpet was a trim level thing.
  6. In my experience, all MJs came with the upper plastic panel. If it's missing, someone took it out. The lower carpet piece was mostly used in trucks with buckets seats, because it was visible. Bench seat completely covers the rear wall. I say mostly, because I've seen some 86 models with the bench seat and it still had the rear carpet. I suspect that later models the carpet panel was deleted when a bench seat was installed as a cost savings move.
  7. I had a light roaring noise in my high mileage XJ that would come and go. Turned out the old rubber transmission mount was oil soaked and super mushy. New trans mount solved it.
  8. My XJ and MJ are both 91, so not Renix, but... I replaced both exhaust manifolds with the aftermarket type with the bellows on the outside tubes. Both were used, pulled from junkyard vehicles, for about $30 each. Cleaned up and installed, work fine and no problems to date. I don't have the flex exhaust section, but it's a good idea.
  9. I think it looks great just the way it is. What size tires, any suspension mods?
  10. I have one of these, and it is excellent quality compared to the stock piece.
  11. The 18mm-3/4" are how they are on my LS engine/hydroboost unit/CJ steering gear in my CJ-7. The HB has pressure in & out, in addition to a return. I like the return hose to pressure line trick, even though I have the plugs. Edit: Looks like you also got the pump. Any difference/advantage to ZJ pump?
  12. Thanks for those details! I thought pressure and return lines used different wrench sizes? At least in every case I can recall working on P/S systems recently. I have big bag of these to keep dirt out and fluid in when pulling, transporting and storing steering gears, pumps, or hydroboost units.
  13. google research shows ZJ pitman provides 3/4"-1" drop from stock XJ/MJ.
  14. Thanks for the advice guys, that helps. I've recently done steering box work on two of my CJs, so familiar with overall procedure. I have several of the cheap harbor freight pitman arm pullers, broke one trying to get the arm off an old CJ box. I think it's 50/50 they will charge me for the arm around here, so I'll go prepared to pull it.
  15. Now I'm interested in a ZJ box. Any tips for pulling one, from those who've done it? I assume line wrenches for the P/S hoses, cotter pin and castle nut big hammer for drag link, remove steering intermediate shaft (not familiar with attachment method of ZJs), remove mounting bolts. Did I miss anything? Tips? I'd remove the pitman arm after I got it home on a bench... unless they are going to charge extra for it.
  16. Here are some pics of the original Jeep vinyl flooring in a 91. Perhaps someone can post pics of the aftermarket vinyl flooring so we have a comparison.
  17. I found the original build sheet in my 91, stuffed in the springs on the bottom of the pass side of the bench seat.
  18. In addition to the taller hooks, I see the nuts for the tow hook bolts are welded to the bracket. They are separate on the earlier ones. Also, it looks like the later ones don't have to extra set of holes to position the bumper forward for the optional winch. The taller hooks would probably require more trimming of the air dam to fit, but might be easier to use. On the early ones, the tip of the hook is kind of close to the bottom of the air dam, which could make slipping on a tow strap a tad difficult.
  19. Here are some tow hooks & brackets I removed from a 91 XJ. All of the driver side, except the last, which shows the different inner nut on the passenger side rear bolt, designed to sit into a large hole in frame.
  20. Yes, when I did my LS swap, I used a lot of connectors from a Chevy truck. I also had an entire spare engine harness from a Chevy truck, so if I wanted a wire with a particular color and a particular terminal, I could remove that wire & terminal from the connector/harness, and make my own custom setup with factory correct insulation colors. Added a lot of time, but cheaper than buying new terminals and the proper crimpers to go with them. Buying an entire harness from a pick-n-pull is actually an inexpensive option to get a lot of quality wire for projects. I'm always looking for new sources for wire/terminals/crimpers/heat shrink/etc. I've used Waytek, Mouser, Del City, Amazon, and ebay.
  21. It might help if you can post some pics of what you are looking at. I can post some good pics of the 84-96 style tomorrow. I'm sure others here can as well. Right now all I have is this not so good pic.
  22. The earlier models had the green and orange colors, later models had the white and green. If that is important to you. I've sold all my 242 gates. I've heard that the 231 gate will work in a pinch. I haven't actually done the swap (yet). You could go ahead and use the 231 gate and just switch it out when you come across a 242 gate. That picture of the bezel looks familiar... it's sitting on my desk right now. PM me if you want 10% off the ebay price.
  23. It's funny, I was trying to remember why I decided against putting one of these in my CJ. Exactly this reason. Every time I look at the picture, I think that brake switch is a warning light circuit. Also, isn't it true that even without the brake failure warning light switch present or plugged in, the brake warning light on the dash still functions to indicate the parking brake is on? I know that's the case in my CJ. Haven't tested it on my XJ or MJ.
