  1. Finally got a great start on this project that has been sitting without a engine for 3 years. I got it in the winter of 2007. It was a barter trade for a Arctic Cat ATV that I destroyed. I drove the truck a couple times to school, about a 30 mile one way trip a couple times. One day I was about 15 miles from home and the cab started to fill with smoke, I just kept going. It died in the turnlane to the gas station, I jammed it into second and the engine started again. Got it stopped, popped the hood and too my surprise the engine oil dipstick was dry. So being a flat broke I went into the store and was able to buy only 2 quarts of oil. Dumped the oil in the truck and drove the rest of the way home, about 9 miles, uneventfully. Then I parked it. Here is the truck a couple days after I got it. It had damage to the passenger side of the box that someone tried to repair. Sorry no pics of that. I moved away from home and took the truck with me. I had a garage at my "new" house and I pulled the drivetrain out of it, no clue what I was doing at the time. I needed a new box for the truck and ended finding a rust free box from a Missori truck at a junkyard. I towbared the 400 dollar truck home and stole the box off it. Buddy took the rest and cut it up for another project. So at this point I had a solid shell to work with. I wanted to swap in a 6 cylinder BAD. I moved to wyoming and my folks hauled it back to their house. Here is a shot from last winter. Far left.. It lived in this spot for about 2 years. Sitting on plastic with all the "good" parts sitting in the box......

    really bad day

    X2 What!! :hmm:
  3. It will be totaled. MJs are not worth anything really and replacement cost of parts is virtually unavailable. My guess is they will say its 3-4k in damage.
  4. Yes thats right! the caliper is "hooked" to the knuckle. I'm thinking the only option is drilling it out. Half a day job for me. Its got these wheels on it, a torch would make a helleva mess. Looks like I'm going to be drilling..
  5. There is NO lug nut on it. Its just the melted wheel stud holding the wheel on. Its going to take a little work to get the truck started but I'm thinking that may work. The brakes are bolted to the knuckle and the brake pads would have to slide straight off their little holders (part of the knuckle).
  6. just spend the last 2 hours absorbing this whole thread. full of WIN
  7. Looks like you found a SWB rollbar. Looks good :clapping:
  8. I am finally starting to well try to work on my 87 Chief. The trans is bad so I have to push and pull the thing around and with one FLAT tire on the left front, its a bear. So I went to pull the tire/wheel off to replace with a spare so I could move it, I could only get 4 lug nuts off. Seems the 5th lug is WELDED. And what I mean by that is someone cranked up their buzzbox and actually melted the wheel stud into a ball of $#!& to hold the rim on. I have pulled all the hub bolts and the caliber bolts thinking that miraculously it would pull off straight. But the 24 year old bond on the knuckle and hub had other plans. I looked at poping the balljoints off but I don't think I can do that with the axle shaft still in the axle... Save for drilling the thing out, which will not be an easy task and I will most likely screw the rim up or just pulling the whole axle (axle is scrap anyway but its replacement is not necessarily "bolt in" ) do I have any other options? This is ALMOST a laughable matter I know.
  9. That track bar looks too be 2 different bars welded together!! Scary :shake:
  10. ... indeed, MN is very COMMANCHE free. :D We certainly are proud and few up here. Yep most of the commanches :rotf: have gone back to nature up here!
  11. Normal non wheeling folks bring their Jeeps in to have their Dana 35s rebuilt all the time. My sister actually brought her 94 ZJ in for a rebuild and the shop told her it was a very common thing they do with Jeeps. 500 bucks later
  12. donate it
  13. I'm about 200 miles north of the Twin Cities
  14. Good to know. I run ONLY WIX or MOPAR filters on everything from her Pontiac to my Cummins.
  15. Thats the going rate....
  16. :agree: I'm now 23, my MJs have cost me 20-30 bucks for liability. My 08 Ram is 170 for full coverage :fs2: But ya cannot complain when $#!& hits the fan and the insurance company is there to get your life back as soon as humanly possible. Insurance is not something to be cheap on. I have heard about the altered suspension vehicles not being covered but it was just reading on a forum somewhere. I have never heard of anyone being denied their insurance AFTER a accident because the vehicle was modified.

    Problem ?

The pan was a direct fit?
  18. Thanks for the advice. I am really set on finding an HO 6 speed 4x4 with the info I have found. About the VP... I was reading that the LP has more bearing on the life of the VP. But you are saying that the VP is pretty much toast after 150K? Have you done one yourself? Rob Nope. I knew i was on borrowed time with my truck being the left pump already took a crap. Fuel is the VPs lube. You have no way of knowing buying a used the truck the condition of the pump or how it was treated huh a week before you make your purchase. The one in my 01 had already took one gasp of air and I didnt have anyway of knowing if it was the stocker (original) or not. Everything tech related I've listed above is what Josh at Jag's Diesel (check out midwestdieselconnection) told me when I brought my truck there to have the work done too it. It was an eye opener for me and yes deep down I got a little spooked. Btw if you can find one, look for a 02.5 H.O. and it will not have a CAD!

    Problem ?

out of stock :hmm: call them. please let us know the verdict!
  20. My 2 cents.. I bought a 2001 Reg Cab 4x4 with a auto about 3 years ago with 140k. Paid 11k out the door off the lot. Never had any problems till about 180k when the lift pump went and left me on the road. This last winter I had the trans rebuild with a custom valvebody, triple disk converter, billet input and billet flex plate. Made a world of difference in the trucks ability to put power to the ground. Also had RV275 injectors and a Quadzilla Adrenline. The thing would literally smoke the tires off without even trying. Also I used to get 25mpg driving to work 40 miles one way. 65 half way and 55 the rest of the way. NO BULLCRAP. Got a hair up my @$$ one day and stopped into the dodge dealer to see what they had. The regular cab was getting to me. (no room for my junk) I wanted a quad cab short box 4x4. They had a 2008 on the lot. I wasnt even going to drive it but I had some time so I figured what the hell. So I had dropped about 6k into my 2001 a couple months earler, jumped in the 2008, it ripped STOCK just as much as my mildly modded 01 if not more. Long story short, I got 10k ON TRADE (remember at the beginning of my rambling I paid 11k for the truck), and I drove the 08 home. I absolutely LOVE the power, the 6 speed auto, the exhaust brake and SHE likes the heated leather.... Couple things to look for on the 24 valve trucks: Service records- the VP pumps are good to about 150k. IMO any truck with over 150k on the VP is on borrowed time. Those are about 1500 bucks so if you look at a truck with higher miles be sure to include that into your buying price. FYI: These trucks are VERY popular to mod. IT also isnt that easy to see if the truck has been modded in its past if the previous owner removed everything and put it back to stock. First thing that should be done in buying one of these trucks is installed a Airdog or FASS 150/150 to get rid of the problematic factory Carter lift pump. I would not be scared of an auto. They are best for pulling becasue you don't use your boost shifting. Also the towing capacity is more on the auto trucks. Look around a bit and I bet you could find a 98.5-02 truck with a Goerend automatic (reasearch these a little) for what you are willing to spend. This got a little long but I have come to realize I love my Cummins almost as much as my MJs.. The 2001: The 2008: Bottom line for me is that I look at a diesel powered truck an investment. Take care of it, it will treat you good and someday you will happy to see how much its still worth ofter 5-6 years!! Just remember the maitenance costs are quite a bit more and parts a bit more then parts for a gas truck. midwestdieselconnection.com dieseltrucksite.com
