  1. "Make sure it fit LWB and SWB jeeps correctly." Theres a difference? So it was offered forsale, and the bumper was "orderable" and the research on building the dang thing wasnt even finished!? :dunno:
  2. Thank you for the offer sir. I have no problem getting a used t-case. They are sincerely a "dime a dozen" but I do have to drive 60 miles to get them!! I just don't want to have future problems. What would CC recommend if I came into posession of a used case..... -split it open and inspect/change out the teflon shoes on the forks, then install or -install the lowest mileage case I can find and hope for the best I'm still not fully understanding what the chain of events that happened in this case.. Linkage? As in mechanical connection from the lever in the cab to the case, internal problems..? I will probably never know. Its hard to know whats still good i this case being I had metal, chunks of metal floating around in there for who knows how long!
  3. I plan to use this jeep as a DD. Nothing fancy, I plan to Run a couple inches of lift to clear the 245/75/16s I have on TJ Rubicon wheels. My 98 XJ has 4.5 inches of lift on 34s with no SYE and a stock np242 with 216k. No problems there..I just can't justify spending extra money for a SYE when its not neccessary. Or hunting down 15 year old cases. I wanna get this thing back on the road asap. I'm seriously leaning towards a reman case. All depends on what the owner of the Jeep wants to do. I have it in my posession, have not paid a dime because we both knew there was a issue. If he will take around 600 bucks off the asking price to replace the t-case, thats going to be the plan. My logical guess as to what happened was the teflon shoes wore, and probably worse then normal with that icky fluid in there. Finally they gave out and thats where the metal on metal contact happened. If I do finally decide reman, and it works out, anybody have a good reccommendation for a company?
  4. it ran out pretty quick. it was sludged up in the magnet area, thats why it looks like silly puddy :rotfl2:
  5. Can tell times are rough when creditors start doing that!!
  6. Pile of junk about the size of a snuff can lid on the magnet So what do you guys think? Should I just replace it with another one? Or fix this one. My question now is, How did this happen? Worn chain or bearings or both? To my knowledge this Jeep has 181,000 miles on this case.. Fluid in this case was BLACK. Probably never was changed... :shake:
  7. Okay I found the issue. After cussing and swearing for over 3 hours, 2 trips to town for different tools, I finally got it out. (I'm slowing bringing my tool collection back from what it was before i moved out west for a few months for work and sold everything..)
  8. 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0/AW4/231, 181k Driving down the road the jeep would make a grinding noise and loose power for a half a second like gears not grabbing. It does not grind all the time. Just randomly. It would do it when shifting from forward to reverse gears and driving down the road in 4hi and 2hi. It will not make the noise or do anything to affect operation in 4lo. I just took it for a ride down the highway. Set the cruise at 60mph. About every 100 yards I would hear the grinding noise and the jeep would buck (loosing power to the ground). Drove for about 2 miles and all of a sudden there was LOUD grinding then no power. Pulled to the side of the road. No propel in 2hi or 4hi. I put it in 4lo and was able to crawl back home. So as it sits now, I have no propel (no forward or reverse) unless I'm in 4lo and everything works as it should. I'm told there was a dealer service bullietin for this back in the day, but I cannot find anywhere online to read up on it. Of course no one on the range has a good 231 laying around! Id like to fix the one I got for a education anyway.
  9. Off to the scrapper. Donor XJ and also a MJ "cab" i had to cut the rockers out of. And a bunch of other junk!
  10. Got the rest of donor Jeep tore down today. Pulled the steering column, rest of the vaccum hoses, and the complete dash wiring, just in case. Pulled it onto the trailer and started pulling the axles. don't know why i pulled the Dana 35 outa the XJ. Guess you can never have enough "spare" parts! Off to the scrap yard in the AM.
  11. Bought another XJ for parts. Had a full cluster and a Dana 44. Paid $250 for it. Pulled the cluster (looks like it will work in the 5YP), Dana 44, and the electric fan and scrapped it for $213. Id say I made out pretty well. The cherokee had OVER 300k and had been cut up and got the crap beat outa it by a buddy of mine. Didnt even think to snap a picture :fs1:
  12. I pulled the cluster outa the 87 XJ today. Looks like it will plug in just fine. Guess its only 15k off at 238k   musta been swapped at one time or another...There was a oil change sticker from WalMart on the windsheid that said the next oil change was due at 271k and that was in 2004. Guess the guy wasnt kidding that the jeep probably had over 300k!!
  13. Very cool story behind it anyway! Amazing that it sat out there for that many years! Or so he says I guess!
  14. This 87 has gauges with a BLACK background....I didnt know they put that style in the renix jeeps. Unless it was swapped in, I will update when I tear it apart.
  15. Ended up lucking out on this deal for a cluster. Came across a 87 XJ with a full cluster, Dana 44, and a Non disco 30. Going to pluck the axles, cluster, trans, t-case out of it and scrap the rest. I do also plan to save the doors for the wing windows also. Is it possible to change the mileage on the cluster to match the miles on the Jeep? I have seen folks swap the speedo for their old one to keep the mileage so I'm thinking not, but I figured I would ask anyway. :dunno:
  16. only a few of us that are active.
  17. The only one I know on here that is active is neohic but hes over by st. cloud. MJ doesnt look bad for a MN rig!
  18. 8.25 takes smaller brake shoes then the 35. I got the wrong ones at the part store once.
  19. Thanks for the replies. Just to throw it out there; has anybody ever seen a successful "splice" of a HO cluster into a old Renix Jeep? I'd like to use what I got but I do realize some things are just not possible.
  20. Ok. So what do all the guys that are doing H.O. swaps doing for gauge clusters? The stock cluster in the 89 was the plain jane with just a speedo and BIG fuel gauge. The cluster from the HO Jeep has all gauges and no idiot lights.
  21. I paid about 180 bucks for a BRAND new, ready to bolt in from my local driveline shop. If I remember correctly they wanted the distance from weld to weld. Weld to weld as in where the double cardon and yolk are welded on.
  22. I'm swapping a 92 4.0 into my 89 2.5 MJ. The cluster in the 89 has different plugs then the cluster from the 92. Is this something that has to spliced to use the newer cluster with the different plugs? OR what are my options here?
  23. So the MJ, noted "The Five Year Project" started life as a 1989 Comanche Pioneer, 2.5/2wd, very light interior, rubber floors, bench seat. It was sold brand new in Florida, spent time in Texas, California, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Now back to the whole "build" part. The plan is to make the 89 a 4.0, 4 wheel drive MJ. The XJ pictured above is the "donor." Spent about 12-14 hours in the garage yesterday to do the teardown. Couple more things before the engine is going to run in this truck. Fuel, new wiring mounts, couple holes drilled for various underhood items, new holes made for x-member. I will try to remember to take pictures as this goes on but as most know its a very hard thing to do when you are covered in grease up to your elbows! Exhaust manifold is cracked BAD on this engine. Crappy picture but it has been repaired once so its going to get replaced with a header.
  24. I have been living in a apartment for awhile so I had no way to even work on this thing. I moved this spring to a new house with a nice garage. I used my XJ to move the trailer around the yard. I got this relic from a fellow club member for around 60 bucks. It had been rolled. We cut the roof off to use it at a mud/run camping event. It never did make it too the event and sat in the woods since last Labor Day. 92 XJ Limited, 4.0/AW4/242 with just over 200k. Runs and drives nice!
