Upgrade or Downgrade? Calling all computer-literate.
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in The Pub
Well, playing with it at home for as short of a time as I did last night, I kinda like the Toshiba. It's quick, has a nice weight and feel in my hands and the keyboard feels good. The left mouse button is going to take getting used to, it's a bit on the stiff side. The speakers sound excellent. From what I gather it's setup with the Harmon-Kardan audio kit, and its a nice rich sound. I've been picking away at reviews here and there, and it seems pretty hot and cold. You either hate Toshiba or you love them. A lot of the reviews are people who had never really had any luck or experience with them in the past, but like them better now. Maybe they are coming around? PCmag.com seemed to like the model I have save for the battery life and weight. They really liked the blue ray player, but don't know if I'll make good use of that. Sort of growing on me... I'll have more time to play with it tonight. Rob -
Well. What a day it has been. I call to you cc land, for the ever needed advice and guidance. A few weeks ago, finally fed up with my doggedly slow Toughbook garage computer (my mainstream Dell crapped out 6 or so months ago), I pulled the trigger, and wondered down to my local Best Buy with a computer in mind: Link to product page: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Insp ... &cp=1&lp=1 My old computer was a Dell Inspiron, and I was a big fan. The only thing that did the old one in was most likely a bad power adapter, which fried the backlight for the screen. This one was last years model, marked down, and only in the warehouse. I had to order it, but figured what the hell. Free shipping to the store, and it was a done deal. They had the "You can smash it into a million little pieces and we will replace it no questions asked" for a little extra, and it came with their free "Geek Squad" new computer setup, and 2 years of their Kaspersky antivirus. Had to wait two weeks, and come get it. So I called yesterday, they had gotten it in, and were setting it up. It was supposed to be ready today. Now here is where the story gets interesting... After a long day of being perched underneath the collection tank of a sewer truck replacing a hydraulic block, sitting at the hospital for the GF's CT scan, and a long drive to Best Buy, my patience was... Lets say, short. I called them while I was sitting at the hospital, asking about the status of the computer, and they told me it wasn't done. Now take this with a grain of salt, but here is the story. Apparently, when they got the computer fired up, it would not recognize the disk drive, the usb ports, and was very glitchy. It wouldn't act right, and it just crashed after a hard reboot. So, it wasn't ready. They suspected a hardware problem. When I got there, they had asked if I would be interested in any laptop in the store, and that they would price match a comparable unit. Being stuck on the Dell, they only had 2, one 15.6" screen, too big, and a 14" with less features than the one I was looking at. Getting mighty aggravated by this point, I was threatening to just call it off, and tell them to cancel my whole order. The computer I originally ordered was the last one in stock, and they had no suitable replacement. They no longer stock a 14" Dell with the i5. After going around and around, I finally got fed up, and found the only one that was the right size and features. Keeping in mind I have 14 days to return it, I left with one of these on impulse. Link to product page: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+S ... &cp=1&lp=1 The specs are a bit better on paper, but I am unfamiliar with Toshiba. I quickly consulted Genovast while I was standing at the check out for info. He seemed leery of the whole situation, and spoke poorly of Toshiba. It was hard to sort of get my point across text, so I am posting this here for him also. Basically what they did was took this Toshiba they had on the shelf, all ready to go, and wiped the price down to the Dell. So, they gave me the $729 Toshiba for the Original $579 I was going to pay for the Dell. So what do you computer savvy guys think? Worth keeping? Should I drop the Toshiba like a bad habit? Currently typing on it now, only have had it open for about an hour... So I really don't have an opinion on it just as of yet. Rob

Black Interior Question
Automan2164 replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The dash is bad. I will get the door panels and plastic but there is no center console. :( Hockey stick armrests? Rob -
On second thought, hang a plate under it to hide that D35 when you look at the truck from the back. Rob :ack:

Black Interior Question
Automan2164 replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I think I have a set, and for the love of Pete, pull that entire interior and save it from an untimely death. Rob -
From what I hear, you should sell it to the local used car lot as a 4x4. Rob

If it were me, I would weld something up to work with the receiver and a trailer connection. I would make it so the plate would mount to a slide in, and have a tag light on it, with a 4 flat connector. When just driving around, have the slide in plate in, and hook it to the trailer harness for the tag light illumination. When towing, remove the plate/mount, and put in the ball/receiver. You won't need the back plate anyway with a trailer. That's the way I would do it at least. Too purdy a bumper to drill holes in it with a junky looking stock plate mount. Savvy? Rob

Very non MJ, why do folk get so excited by 'i' stuff?
Automan2164 replied to Jerry's topic in The Pub
My roomie has an I-Phone... I think living here he realizes now how crappy it is to be tied to Apple. Anytime we are sitting around having a laugh, I'll hit up the phone, and find soundboards about the movies we are watching, or be able to use apps as I need them. He tries to do the same thing, he gets no such thing. All apps cost money, and most don't even exist on Apple. The open source of Android is so much better for everything. Hell, I even think we had a member working on a VIN decoder at one point. Rob -

X2 on the Evo. Its sooo much easier to upload MJ porn with a phone that uploads pics straight to the internet. Forget about the apps. I have Kelley Blue Book, GPS, youtube, The Weather Channel, VNC Viewer, and my favorite, the OBD II app that uses a blue tooth adapter to let me check codes and PID's on any OBD II vehicle. Plus, its nice always having an 8MP camera / Video with flash... I have close to 3000 pics on my phone. Rob -
I hope so bud. I hope so. Rob

Wow. MJ - 1 Chevy - 0. Never in a million year would I have thought that it would look so one-sided. Yet another vote for the headrested bench that came out in '90. Granted, we have yet to see the rest of the truck... I imagine that the bed is into the cab to some extent. Hell. It's an MJ. The insurance company is probably going to total it. Look up the collectors value on KBB or NADA, and don't settle for anything less. Take the money you get, buy the truck back. Bang out the tailgate, torch off the bumper, and make a new one out of steel. Then drive the piss out of it. It's an MJ. Rob

You try it with red needles? Would be pretty slick. IMHO. Rob

Hey... Is what it is. The Eliminators were a monotone truck. Color keyed everything, and if it wasn't color, it was blacked. The ultimate sleek sleeper. Any chrome on an Elim should be blasphemy. Chrome is for "da hood" and retiree's. Rob :D

No chrome! Rob

Gonna miss you Joe. No more suffering man. I'm sure all the Junked, beaten, and scrapped MJ's are up there to keep you happy. Glad I could spend a little time with ya while you were here. Jeep on buddy. Rob :(

I love how you were giving the class a run down on cell phones, and immediately following, you are in the back room talking/texting with me about my latest MJ score. Rob

Staples of my Bachelor existance: Beer Family size thing of turkey dinner from Oncore (sp?) and a bag of sweet Hawaiian rolls. Makes for a few meals, the turkey slices and gravy really hit the spot sandwich style. Ramen. Hamburger Helper... Mmm. I'll eat that even if I'm not broke. Especially the original beef noodle, or the cheesy hashbrowns. Shepard's Pie: Brown a pound of ground beef, toss in a can of cream of something soup (don't add water), then add a can of corn and some instant mashed potatoes (Prepared separately). Hot dogs. Beer. Tuna Helper. "Bag soups" You know, they usually come in Cream of Broccoli, Potato cheddar, usually say to add about 8 cups... Prepare as you normally would, but add a bag of frozen broccoli and some bacon bits. Would be a couple days worth of soup. Beer. Frozen pizzas. And I am not talking about tombstone, jacks, or anything else you would recognize. I'm talking the on-sale weird stuff, with odd combos. *None of this healthy by any means, but cheap, easy, and filling. Other than that, eh. Hang in there man. Work on that spelling, and pay attention in class. You shouldn't be surfing CC at school, unless your on a break. Rob

Those interlocks are a good thing... If implemented properly... One has to wonder how it even moved down the road to get to the ditch. Speaking of technician problems... We learned of a new one in training... The payment interlock. An autobody was having trouble with a car that wouldn't start, so they sent it to the dealer. After chasing it down for awhile, they found a small device with a keypad. Turns out, its a payment interlock device, that has a timer, and when the owner makes a payment every month, they get a code to reset the device, and get another month out of it. Turns out, the owner stopped paying after the wreck... Yowza. Rob

D35 Leak?!? How serious is this?! HELP!
Automan2164 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:headpop: You just need to CHILL. A seeping pinion seal will not ruin your rear end. It doesn't have to be a world ending omi-god scenario... At best, it might spray some oil on the underside of the bed, helping out with rust protection. Have the parts store order both seals. Buy them. Bring them home. Take off the cover and look at your gears. The bigger vertical gear will have a stamped set of numbers, a set will be in a pair of 2, IE, 41 11. Take the bigger number and divide it by the smaller number. That is your ratio. Use that to select the proper seal. Next, look at the smaller gears inside the housing. Push in on one of the axle's via the wheel. If it has a c-clip axle, you will see a little c-clip at the end of the shaft, held in by the gear. It will be recessed into the smaller gears. That will tell you whether or not it's a c-clip. You should be fine. RELAX. Rob -
