Does The Ho Have Coolant Pressure Sensors/switches?
Rockfrog replied to gogmorgo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, gonna guess that he's pointing out that if the sensor on the Thermostat housing (coincidently, right next to the blown hose) gets messed up in some way (say by a shower iof coolant for example) ... the engine will likely run like poo and stall out? Kinda makes it relevant I 'spose ;) -
I just grab the chea[p telescoping magnets and bend twist accordingly ... takes a few tries but I've managed to get mine all seven times (I learn slow) ... now I tape the damn socket on. For the XJ that bolt is no longer even used (long arm 3-link). I hate that bolt.

Main Crank Bearing Installation Apocolypse

You're positive they gave you the correct bearings? None of my 4.0's had the center groove in them. -
Once Again, Another Tranny Issue
Rockfrog replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the issue is the phosphorous/sulfurous compounds in the GL5 literally corrode the Brass synchro's used in the AX5 and 15 transmissions ... the BA 10/5 doesn't have the issue as it uses a spring and steel synchro assembly ... the BA has other issues but the Aisin transmissions do have a problem with GL5 gear oil as a result of the Brass synchro's. It's not immediate, but it will happen over time. It is the EP additives that are actually corrosive to yellow metals (which is Brass), the spec for Aisin trans' is GL3 which has been supeceded by GL4. Chrysler has admitted in the past the the GL5 printed spec was a misprint. -
Once Again, Another Tranny Issue
Rockfrog replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
DUMP THE GL-5 OUT OF THAT TRANS, it uses Brass synchros and GL-5 will dissolve the brass synchros ... you need GL-3 or 4 Spec oil. For the Clutch fluid look for Girling spec fluid as it is safe to use ... usually that means Castrol. But get on that trans fluid change asap ... the GL-5 spec was a printing error in your original manual. -
Does The Ho Have Coolant Pressure Sensors/switches?
Rockfrog replied to gogmorgo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
there is only a temp sensor at the back of the head for the guage, and a coolant temp sensor for the PCM in the thermostat housing ... if you lost the coolant at that point, either something shorted or the PCM saw the colder temp as a result of no flow and flooded the motor out going too rich, ar a hotter temp and leaned it out too much ... the backfiring suggests one or the other? -
What Hoses For A Closed To Open Cooling Swap
Rockfrog replied to 87mjdriver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's mine Heater hosing (stock '88 thermo housing) just used bulk 5/8" hose for both runs Coolant recovery (I pulled the hose out so you could see it, usually it tucked away ... will be installing a '92 XJ bottle soon) Hope that answers a few questions for you. -
What Hoses For A Closed To Open Cooling Swap
Rockfrog replied to 87mjdriver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I converted my MJ this summer I used stock 88 rad hoses, an '00 rad (spare from my XJ), and generic 5/8" heater hose. Heater hose was tight on one side and fine on the other. I ran two lines straight from heater core to thermo housing deleting the valve altogether. -
I've never had a problem with the bolts, it's the two studs at the front and back that snap. Usually the one at the rear of the head is the main problem stud. Always seem to break flush and had to be drilled out and re-tapped to 7/16-14. Getting good at it now though.
-
i can rip the front end off my '00 in half the time it takes to do the same for the 88 MJ .... and yeah the '00 doesn't fight me the whole way either. 98 is a good year for the XJ, so's early 99.
-
yep, already have the parts for a disk swap for the MJ, I'm done with drums ... just waiting to see if the 4.0 will blow first though.

2 Wheel Drive To 4 Wheel Drive Conversion
Rockfrog replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ones bolted to a 4.0 and ones bolted to a 2.5/2.8 ... The bolt patterns on the bellhousing to block are completely different. Also the ax4 is a 4spd replaced by the ax5. The ax15 is a heavier duty 5spd -
Axle Swap Issues 92 In A 99
Rockfrog replied to 87sparTruck's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The YJ had it until the end in the 95 model year. I think 93 was the last year for XJ's -
Axle Swap Issues 92 In A 99
Rockfrog replied to 87sparTruck's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Except the ZJ and TJ had low pinion front axles. They'll still bolt in, but they aren't the same. I said the suspension was the same, not the axles ... but it's fairly moot anyway. and For more clarity on this one ... 1993-1996.5 used a special crush sleeve design pinion. After 1996.5, the ZJ used a TJ style gear set (short pinion) with crush sleeve. TJ gears will NOT work in a CJ. CJ gears WILL work in a ZJ (1993-1996.5). TJ gears WILL work in a ZJ (1996.5-1998) -
Axle Swap Issues 92 In A 99
Rockfrog replied to 87sparTruck's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
precisely ... my current axle in my '00 XJ came from an '89 limited. You could even bolt in a CAD axle or a 2wd beam axle as a direct bolt on swap. Or, one from a ZJ, or a TJ .... as long as the gearing matches, the suspension are the same on the front. -
I have an 88 xj harness to swap in, my box terminals look like a 3 yr old hammered them with a screwdriver so I have to replace all those as well. New harness is pristine.

Yep, work and look great, installed a set last month.

Mmmmm ... I love the smell of fried wiring at midnight. ;)

Front End Wobble...not Sure If It's The Infamous Dw
Rockfrog replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
well check the trac bar, and check for play in the steering box .... at the input and the pitman arm. Sounds like you have worn steering components .... DW is a hell ride that simply turning the wheel does not cure. I've finally cured it in my XJ I do not want to go there again. So rest easy in knowing what you have isn't DW although it may be just and PITA to source and solve. -
That's what I was meaning ... the D44 should only have 1/4" thicker tubes if not the same ... haven't bothered pop a tape measure to one before but they should be either 2.5 or 2.75" thick no? so it should be anywhere near enough to cause a clearance issue, and I'm guessing he just got his plates mixed around. I've done things like it before.
-
was it me? do I smell funny?

I've had that happen on my old '92 YJ, added a set of fogs to the existing stock plugs, and thought "cool that was easy as pie". Then about a week later I was out in the back country hit the fogs and 5mins later lost all my lights. turned off the fogs and headlights came back ... learned that lesson right quick..
-
If you are meaning this then that is exactly the same parts as this Just viewed from the pug end and has brown plastic instead of white
-
Ok so there are two relays in the wiring under the dash .... the horn relay which is white, and the intermittent wiper relay which is a standard 5 pin unit. Horn relay Intermittant wiper relay Now remember that this is a 88 Xj harness but I've seen these same relays in my MJ ... placement would put them just above the fuse block
-
I think I know what he's referring to. There are a couple relays under the dash ... don't know what they are for though. Let me go get my 88 XJ dash harness out as they are in that one as well. pictures to follow.
