97+ swap fenders with older flairs??
Rockfrog replied to krustyballer16's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I can snap inside pics tomorrow, trimmed the retainers and drilled an extra hole to hold the leading edge. -
Ball joint.......what is this?
Rockfrog replied to Jeep Driver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Almost positive they stopped using them altogether at some point. None on my 92 axle, I have an 89 axle on my 00 XJ that didn't have them either. So as the when ... ??? -
89 2.5 Computer Controlled Carburetor?
Rockfrog replied to AeroNautical's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
FYI - the AMC 2.5l was designed based off the AMC 4.2l platform, more or less a 4.2l with two cylinders knocked out. Add in some design changes here and there. The AMC 4.0l was intro'd 3yrs later after they basicly added the two cylinders back in. As for why they used TBI instead of MPFI ... They were too busy working on the 4.0 to fix what wasn't broken, then got bought out, and Chrysler likely did the usual takeover routine, spend a few years figuring out what they just bought, where to go with it, and how to do it. Once that was sorted, MPFI hit the 4cyl. Just my take on it. -
Electrical Connectors, under dash
Rockfrog replied to daking's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, I pulled one from a 92 xj and popped it in my 88. Lights off after key - headlights stay on for a period of time. Lights of before key off - lights go off as normal. -
Another HO harness swap question..
Rockfrog replied to WiscoXJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That made me remember something about there being a plug change in 94, check a 93 model to confirm, I have two 92 columns that match my 88. Looks like you are going back to rewiring the harness to make that work. Maybe try the earlier in switch on the later column. That might be the key to making it work, either that or use an earlier harness. -
Triangle gaskets inside valve cover
Rockfrog replied to drase's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Never had an issue deleting the gaskets, always tightened up fine. The aluminum VC above has no gaskets, pulled them when I cleaned and modified it. Ran it without issue for a year before swapping my '00 XJ VC onto it. My '00 XJ has a 93 VC without them as well. -
Triangle gaskets inside valve cover
Rockfrog replied to drase's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can get the CCV elbow grommets at damn near any parts store. They are labelled as PCV grommets for a Ford on the package, but they are the same size for the aluminum and steel HO Valve covers. For Renix ... They are part of the Vacuum assemblies. As previously mentioned. As for rubber/steel Valve cover retainer grommets, they are only used on the steel valve cover used from 97 to 06 on the 4.0l Steel 97-06 Aluminum (this one is 87-90, 91-95 mounts the same but uses 1/4 turn CCV grommets with a flat round rubber gasket) -
Electrical Connectors, under dash
Rockfrog replied to daking's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok, let me have a quick go at this ... Mid right of picture, black connector, 4 wires - receptacle for headlight delay timer. Translucent connector upper right - emissions timer. Yellow plug with circuit board type connector - cruise control. White 2 pin between fuse panel and break switch - again for cruise control (shuts off cruise when you tap breaks). The rest I don't know off hand, need to sit in front (under my dash and it's a 3hr boat ride, and a 4hr crew bus ride away). -
Nice lookin truck. As for that little joy of a twisty high way ... I like to think some dumb nut took a ball of yarn, tossed it on the ground and said "build that!" Used to drive it once a week for the last 15 or so years (in my lifted XJ and then my MJ - in fact, that high way was part of the reason I have the MJ) till I transferred to the other side of the Island.

Another HO harness swap question..
Rockfrog replied to WiscoXJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Try it, look at the plug and the stock connectors on the stock column ... put the blue where the black plug was, and try them upside down. I'm out at work or I'd snap a picture of what I mean. I was going to swap the switches but they actually differ, the plug connectors were however still the same. Just had a slightly altered orientation on the switch. The ignition switch plug was all that caused me problems. Until I figured it out. -
89 2.5 Computer Controlled Carburetor?
Rockfrog replied to AeroNautical's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, but eventually they just dissolve into the tissue they are. Still, they would work better than the electric "turbinators" -
Another HO harness swap question..
Rockfrog replied to WiscoXJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 92 column I used plugged right in with the exception of the above noted difference. It was actually out of an automatic, I modified to work in the manual (disabled the shift interlock). -
How hard are they to pull, I have a stock 88 column with intermittent wipers ... But swapped to a 92 tilt column. My stock column had no issues so could pull the switch. I have a spare 92 tilt column to use for my MJ so the 88 column is destined for the JY one day.

AMC/Chrysler had that habit, they used GM sensors and parts but had them "rewired" ... The Renix era 5spd TPS is a shining example of this (physically identical to the GM 2.8 sensor, but with a different pinout).

Exhaust mani leak on 88 4.0 Renix
Rockfrog replied to Kickinmule's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just use a small cup and run a line off a spare nipple ... Dip, bog, dip, bog, dip, bog, smoke, located. -
89 2.5 Computer Controlled Carburetor?
Rockfrog replied to AeroNautical's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Haha that looks like one of those eBay electric turbo's ... About as effective as a paper mache' canoe. The "carb" is actually a Renix TBI unit, my buddy has the same system on his 90 2.5 YJ. -
Options for my mirrors
Rockfrog replied to BootsNTrucks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I like my towing mirrors, dunno why but they just seem to say truck to me. Had the option to use the 92 parts XJ's joystick mirrors or my spare 2000 power mirrors. Kept the towing mirrors. Probably scuff and paint semi-gloss black or find some factory black Ford mirrors but that's about it. -
Exhaust mani leak on 88 4.0 Renix
Rockfrog replied to Kickinmule's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Use the seafoam or atf trick. A little into a vacuum line will start the smoke, anything not coming out the pipe is coming from somewhere in between manifold and tailpipe, and will be quite evident. -
I still have yet to get the stock pipe out of the stock Renix manifold, it takes a 27mm wrench BTW (common enough up here in metric igloo land). They come off the intake easily enough, but I don't want to mangle them as the pipe and exhaust manifold are near mint - no cracks and barely crusty. Be a shame to destroy them, someone will have a need. In any event, I swapped a HO intake, head, and exhaust onto my renix block. Runs great with no EGR, no issues what so ever. I was even getting 20-22mpg pre swap with the EGR system removed and tossed. Now I'm pushing 18 post swap but my exhaust manifold is warped and I have an exhaust leak when cold. And I have a crap load more power with the larger TB, she pulls something fierce, so power take gas, so I guess I'm still doing good. Haven't bothered to track it since the 32's went on though, speedo is now 10-ish km/h slow at 110km/h ... Needs correcting.

I used to watch that show all the time, it was my favourite show back when it aired. And just who was "The Unknown Comic"

Using ABS calipers on a non-ABS system
Rockfrog replied to whitetailjeeper's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sounds like you have the MJ's braking system confused with an XJ's braking system. The MJ front proportioning valve, simply put, isn't a proportioning valve. It is merely a distribution valve. Two lines to the front as usual ... But also two lines to the rear. Where the actual proportioning valve would be in the block is the secondary line for the rear braking system. That load sensing Valve is the Proportioning valve on an MJ. I suspect you will need to swap the stock type valve for one from and XJ and start over. Did you bench bleed the master? -
Another HO harness swap question..
Rockfrog replied to WiscoXJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Can't see any sig's as I'm on my phone but ... When I swapped my stock 88 column for one from a 92 ... I thought the plugs didn't match the later ignition switch, but they actually did. The orientation changed with the HO's so compared to a Renix they are upside down, backwards and swapped. Once I figured that out it was easy. Might help, might not. -
Ball joint.......what is this?
Rockfrog replied to Jeep Driver's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's most likely cadmium plated steel, just looks brass colored. My old 76 Ford D44 had the same thing in the upper ball joint hole, there was a depth measurement to achieve before installing the knuckle. -
When I pulled my VC when I got my MJ ... I was surprised the valves were even able to move it was so gunked. I scraped and vacuumed, then changed the oil every 500-1000km for 6 months (adding atf, sea foam, and finally MMO). When I pulled the head and pan a year later, I found crud to still be everywhere, lifter galley was solid, pan was caked, timing gears were surrounded ... Again with the scraping, spraying, cleaning and vacuuming ... then back together it went. Hoping for the best. She ain't perfect but 20000kms later she's still rolling strong. And the oil is cleaner between changes. Point is, if the VC is that bad, so is the rest of the motor, unless you plan to tear into it ... Let it dissolve slowly, there is going to be a lot of crud to work through.
