I think you're idea is a very good one. Just off the top of my head I think something like Uber except for mechanics might work. There are a lot of single women and guys who don't know a ratchet from a hammer and need help keeping their transportation on the road. Just today I saw a 20 something year old guy watching a 60 something year old AutoZone guy install a battery for him. That was pathetic, but its indicative of the lack of mechanical capability there is in the general population. Most people just want to get in the car, turn the key and drive, most people cannot or will not work on their car. The problem you'd encounter is certifying the mechanics. I'm a very competent mechanic but I'm certified by shade tree only, I'll do anything to a Jeep, but I've learned not to mess with German stuff and some Japanese stuff. Its just not what I know. I know several guys who make their living off of mechanical side work. They're not getting rich but the need in the market is there, at least it is in my locale. I think as far as work for niche groups like Jeeps, VWs, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc will be taken up by local clubs and enthusiast groups and word of mouth. I've been working for free for several months lately on my club members Jeeps. I'm only mentioning that cause I think if the "Uber Mechanic" business model will work, it will probably be most successful if its only for general and basic maintenance needs. Another hurdle I think you might face is business/advertising backlash from local auto shops. After all, you'd be cutting into their margin. Even though, I think your idea may work and may help a few certain people save money, but how would it help the mechanics make money? How would you make money on it? How is it going to make money?

Is anyone planning on going this year? It's gonna be up in Jasper. Send me a PM if anyone wants to meet up and wheel together. We low country swamp guys are gonna have about 10-15 jeeps going...of course my CC brethren are welcome to join in with us.

Haha, yup, broke it a couple weeks before at Uhwarrie. Too lazy to fix it, that and my welder won't burn it in that well. I'm gonna angle them inward and mount the tops to the X frame one of these days. -

Some pics from our local club's show and shine today....The truck traveled higher up the RTI ramp than any of the other Jeeps that tried it but due to the wheel base I lost out on a trophy to a TJ. Oh well. :) -

Clutch, while the trans is off drop the pan and do the rear main, and slap in a set of bearings and a new oil pump. -

When you do the clutch, have a couple cans of brake cleaner on hand and drench the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel real good. -
I'm building a YJ for a buddy, it has ended up as a 258 with a waggy 727 and twin sticked 229. I was gonna use a 231 but the input shaft on my extra 93' 231 was too short to seal on the trans output seal. I know the later 231s have a longer shaft but I don't think they'd work either. So for now I'm twin sticking the Waggy 229 for now to get him rolling. Eventually if like to throw in a 231 or 242 and I've read some other forum posts about a double seal for the 231 input. If anyone has successfully mated a 727 and one of the newer NP TCs please let me know how you did it. Thanks!

I'm trying to find the right part number for an 87' renix TBI 2.5 with a serpentine pulley. The block is actually an 2001. I have a newer MFPI 2.5 balancer but the pulley is much closer in toward the block, it won't line up with the renix accessories. Anyone know good part number so I can order one? Thanks!

Sounds like you need a new fuse box or new fuse terminals. I think its easier to remove the dash and replace the whole dash harness and fuse box, at least I can do it faster and more comfortably than contorting myself and repairing the fuse block in place. There's a couple of good links in the DIY section. http://comancheclub.com/topic/18588-xj-dash-harness-to-rear-mj-harness-wiring-guides/?hl=dash+harness, I recently swapped a 89' auto XJ dash harness into my 89' manual MJ and it fixed just about everything. The interior dash lights are nice and bright now, B pillar lights work again, wipers are nice and strong, radio reception is better, starts better, runs better, brake lights and turn signals work again. A rotted fuse box can definitely cause all sorts of problems. After owning the MJ for so long I had just gotten used to everything being like it was, now it almost seems like a new truck. It also added the headlight delay feature and XJ rear defrost/wiper timer and wires and many more power terminals in the fuse block. I'm also borrowing mfpdm's ideas about using the rear defrost power supply for bed rail lights. I'm gonna use the XJ factory dash switches for fog lights, bed rail lights, rock lights and my OBA system. Now I've pulled another 88' XJ auto harness and I'm about to do the same thing on my 87' MJ. -

Thanks for the info, I hadn't considered an underdash unit. What year compressor did you use?....I was thinking I'd just have the hoses custom made depending on the compressor and underhood components. -

Its a TBI 2.5. Renix XJs are rarer in the JY with every passing day and the 88' I pulled the dash harness from is a tempting candidate. Thanks for the input Dasbulliwagen. -
I've got my little blue truck running darn good right now, it's averaging about 23 mpg and I think I can easily get 25 out of it with a little more tinkering. I'm thinking of driving it on into the summer and adding AC. I've got a complete dash harness from an 88' XJ and could use all Renix components but I'm thinking the later years had more efficient systems. What donor years would you guys recommend for all the HVAC items?

WJ Limited 4.0 4x4. Nice leather, the interiors aren't as dated as a ZJ/XJ, classy good looks, good mileage, a bit of cargo space...$6K would get a pretty nice one.

I have a 5 gallon bucket of suspension bolts, so I just cut em if its faster.
