Which rig are you taking out there? I enjoyed being close to Moab when I lived in Vail. I visited a couple times just because there was nothing else to do over the weekend.

what tires do you recommend?
87Warrior replied to mjtjnj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Another vote for Cooper. They seem to have the best selection of hybrid tires on the market (at and mt combo). Check out their site and see what would suit your driving style and needs the best. -
sandblasting the frame
87Warrior replied to MancheKid86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Click on my build link in my sig and you can see what I did. I used a cheap Harbor Freight 20lb pressure blaster. I added a moisture trap to the air inlet to prevent the media from clogging the pot. You will need a big compressor or a lot of patience, I had a little of each. I used Black Diamond media, about $7 for a 50 lb bag at the farm supply store. It is coal slag. Black beauty is a similar product I found at the hardware store, but it was priced a little note. I liked the 40/60 grit best. Tried a bag of 20/40 but it would clog my nozzle. Have respirators, goggles, gloves and a long sleeved shirt. A hat helps too as well as ear plugs. You will understand why once you are under the truck with the nozzle.... I ran at least 600 lbs of media through my blaster. I bought 300 lbs of Black Diamond to do my truck and reused it. A tarp under the truck will capture most of the media. If you want to reuse it, buy a kitchen strainer that will fit inside the funnel for your blaster. Makes reusing the media really easy and efficient. Make sure your cell phone is no where near the blasting site. The media dust will get into the speaker and ruin it, it will sound like you are under water. Ask me know I know this....... -
dakota 22 gallon tank and fuel pump
87Warrior replied to 99Manche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you for your research. Please keep us updated on how it works out for you on the road. This seems like the best option to get fuel to the 4.0. What harness did you use to attach to the pump module? -

Repainting the Interior Trim
87Warrior replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Check out the Mopar interior dye spray. It's similar to paint but is applied in very light dustings. I think hornbord used some on a b pillar. The only problem I foresee is that the newer black interiors are not as dark as those of years past, so finding the right color might be a challenge. -
While I am particularly attached to Jeeps and just get sick to my stomach know.the leaders of our country decided this was a good idea, I feel for the rest of the economy that is still being hurt by the C4C event. From the used car dealers to the guy trying to buy a beater car to get around in but can't find one reasonably priced because the govt said it was worth $4,500 and to the small mechanics shops who used to keep those clunkers on the road. Lots of good vehicles met their end with that terrible govt program. Only to help keep two businesses open. There were good pickings at the yards, but the c4c vehicles could only have stayed around so long before being smashed. I hang my head in disgust for those in Washington who thought this was a good idea. That said, HAIL TO THE 4.0. That was very impressive. That just proves they will run upside down, under water with no oil.

I don't recall ever seeing a VIN on the frame rail after I media blasted my truck. I only found some dates stamped into it. It is on the dash, driver door, firewall and front crossmember. The frame rail VIN is really clear on my TJ.

1990 Rebirth ('97 Conversion)

I believe you must retain the same FOB and receiver as there was a change in the way they communicate in late 1999. -
Man that sucks! Good luck with the recovery.

My wife and I have had good luck with her 02 4cyl Camry. At 150k miles the only issue we have is that it will burn a 1/2 quart of oil over 5k miles. While I don't particularly like the car, it is the model of mid sized efficiency. It gets 28.5-30mpg regularly with her mixed driving. Coming into CO from Yellowstone, it pulled 39 mpg on 85 octane. These cars can be found for $6k for a low mileage loaded version.

I have seen them past 5.0L. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. You should really study jeepstrokers forum. From my research, all aftermarket pistons for the 4.0 have a deeper dish than the stock 13.1cc. This is important to consider because once you deck the block to attain the appropriate quench, these deeper dished pistons could make up for the additional compression caused by decking the block. In addition to the basic compression ratio calculation, you must take in account the valve timing. I studied stroker builds till I was blue in the face for my truck. I decided against it and will build my second 4.0. Yes, you can build a reliable stroker. It's been done several times. But the important thing to do is research and make your own decision. Asking for the best stroker build plan is like asking what is the best tire/wheel/lift combo.

I believe Backdraft installed a Ranger 3rd brake/cargo light on his truck. Looks :hijack: good if you ask me.

Intermittent steering creak?
87Warrior replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It sure isn't getting better... I always try to order the parts online and pick up in store. Be sure to use the TRE pulled. Will make your life much easier. And remember, the drag link does not alter the toe only your steering wheel center. -
Intermittent steering creak?
87Warrior replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That will do it. Go with a Moog replacement. Advance auto stocks them and O Rielys can get them. -
Can somebody help out the moron? I just got an Android based phone and am trying to figure everything out. Soooo, what does it mean to 'root' your phone?
-
Dang, good luck. It took less than a week for my KS MJ title to arrive after buying the truck in MO.

Intermittent steering creak?

The upper ball joint should have a grease fitting at the top of the joint. The lowers are not serviceable. EDIT: I am only familiar with the 4wd ball joints. I have no clue about the 2wd beam ball joints. -
Engine rebuild or buy used engine?
87Warrior replied to TyeT's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Back in 03 I bought my TJ, which was hydrolocked. Had two rods snapped in half and had punched holes in the oil pan. The other four rods had nice arcs is them. It required a 0.020 overbore to clean up the cylinder walls. I simply rebuilt the motor and went on with life. This Jeep has no more power than any other stock 4.0. I now have 80k miles on the rebuild. The rebuild did cost me more than the temporary WJ 4.0 I had in there while I was rebuilding the motor. If you have the skill and most importantly, the time, to rebuild I say go for it. It may be more spendy, but you will know what's going on inside the motor vs praying a used unit wasn't trashed. -
AFTERMARKET FOG LIGHTS
87Warrior replied to 88AMComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Send RockMJ a pm and ask about how he wired up fog lamps using a factory switch and wiring. You should never wire electronic accessories straight to the battery, even with a fuse. Volts are not the same as amps. Relays can be a bit confusing at first. Study how they work and you will be doing safe wiring in no time. Jim... :jump:
