Steps in freshening up a drivetrain
87Warrior replied to Automan2164's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Rob I will be doing the same thing very soon. My plan is to replace every gasket and seal, valve stems, replace the rod bearings, and get the head cleaned up/ported. It seems silly not to stroke it since you are so close, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. However, if a 258 crank fell in my lap.... When I rebuilt my Rubi 4.0 I used all dealer seals and gaskets. That was 70K miles ago and the valve cover gasket is just now starting to ooze. I have been debating where to buy the parts for the MJ project as the dealer parts where a tad pricey. I may mix-n-match. Just remember, it is NO FUN to do a head gasket with the motor in the vehicle. 75% of that battle is just accessing the head. My theory is replace what you can on the motor when pulled. Do that and you can expect another 250K miles out of it. -
Body, interior, and floor pan are on their way!

You know, I like it. But not as a permanent fixture on the truck. Rather something to be out up when needed. Never been a big fan of the hard toppers. Did you have to drill any holes in the top bed rail? How does that back window work?

I know AutoZone will scan then give you a print out of the codes with possible solutions. The downer is you have to deal with AutoZone people. In my 03 TJ I can turn the key 3 times and the codes will show up in the odometer.

Maybe if we can get some scaled comancheclub.com stickers made, a Jeep tailgate sticker could be made. Hint, hint... Spencer? I would totally rock a CC windshield banner

Cool deal! Any chance you can snap a better picture of the sticker sheet? I am just curious. Can't wait to see what you do to the body.

I screwed up my Tail lights!

Try a removing agent, then wet sand with 2000 grit paper. Buff with fine rubbing compound. Then polish with one of those headlight restoration kits. I used this to restore a light I have, less the paint remover. Takes a long time, but looks good in the end. -
No progress that is real exciting. I have been carefully been pulling out the dash from the donor so I can access the firewall sheet metal that needs cut out. What was fitted in the truck was a spare dash I picked up some time ago. I have also been researching abrasive blasting methods to clean up the frame so it can be treated with POR15. Also been in contact with the body shop so they can get ready for the rolling chassis. I did get some of the sheet metal set on the front end for fitting. The driver side fender apparently a reproduction piece and does not fit nearly as well as the OEM passenger fender.

Good luck down there... And watch out for the drivers. I swear Crawford county drivers are the worse I have come across. Do not let them play demolition derby with the MJ. My sister spent 3 years down there. Got tired of it and just started her Sr year at KSU. What gear ratio are you looking for?

Craigslist  the guy was a Jeeper too. Longer links are in the box, along with a bunch of replacement parts. Even has headlight housings you can cut into the body. And yes, full price is just crazy talk! Edit: just measured the wheel base, about 12 1/4".

:rotf: Well Rob, this is ALL your fault: Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Picked up this lightly used Axial SCX10 today. Also came with an upgraded steering servo, battery, weighted wheels, and a set of scale super swampers. Cost a little more than I wanted, but less than a new one without the extras. Crawls like a mad man on speed. Now to order that MJ body and interior, then prepare to match my truck!

Has anybody successfully used any of the DIY auto window tinting? I am contemplating about doing it to the back 3 windows of the 2door XJ. No moving windows to worry about. The goal? Some privacy and to keep the interior temps down in the heat of the sun. Can it be done, at home, and result in a quality job? If so, what are the tips and tricks you would suggest? Soapy water and a credit card? Most of the shops that do window tinting seem real shady in my books and I would rather not give them a Jeep to, enjoy...

I have found that the two Jeep specific forums I frequent, Rubicon Owners and CC, wind up being a connection to some long lost family. I have met a WIDE variety of people from these groups over the years and am just amazed at the level of respect everybody has for another. It doesn't matter if you are a newbie in a stock rig or have been around the block in something that hardly resembles a Jeep, we are all here for the same reason and have some secret level of understanding for each other.

I joined, then got my truck. Went from: To this a year and a half later: Sheesh, was just going to be a simple daily driver. Thanks CC

That is pretty neat  Did the previous CC visitor leave you any parts

It really angers me how modern mowers run an open differential. Had a tiny John Deere STX-38 lawn tractor some 15 years ago that was locked. It would flip over backwards before spinning up a hill. It also had gears and a clutch.

10-4 I think so too. September 25th :brows:

I bought my truck while dating. I also started my overhaul while dating. We are now engaged. Just last week she said, and I quote, "I can't wait for your to be done, its going to be so cool...and pretty." :ack: She has always been supportive of my Jeeping passion and has become very addicted to trail riding through the Rockies, probably for the rare scenery and photography opportunities. This is also the same girl who wants to trade her Camry in for a Cummins powered Ram, because it gets decent mileage and can pull the TJ.

Welcome to the club! And a 2 point fair warning 1. Hope you have an updated tetanus shot. 2. Hope you have extra storage space for the 1 MJ you initially buy and the 3 donor rigs following that! - Brett

I might have to get a couple and work on detailing them... for use at a later date.

Do you plan on operating the lights when other vehicles are around? If so, ignore me. I have a set of 4" 6000K HID lights I picked up from O Reilys online a few years back. Now they only sell the 7" variety. Throughout the years I have tried several different lights, and these 4" HIDs are by far the best. These two little lights out-lit my buddy who has 4 Hellas on his rig. See the below picture for an example on a night run up Imogene Pass in CO. If you would like to go this route, contact Josh at http://www.skinnypedal.com He is a sponsor of the rubiconownersforum.com and indicated he could get full metal HID off road lights for a better price than the plastic things I have. You can tell him I sent you.

I dream of making the 6,500mi, round trip, from KS to the Savage Trail outside of Denali National Park in a Jeep. Last year I was in AK on vacation and took a Jeep trip into the Yukon. I was surprised how easy it was to drive into Canada. The guy at the gate only asked for my passport, the driver, and asked if we had any booze or firearms. Getting back into AK was almost as easy, just the guy wanted all of our passports. Have fun and take lots of pictures!

You better NOT post pics... because I will be insanely jealous of your short bed :fool:

Very well said Eagle. I saw on the news tonight that some of the victims families are pushing to get more strict regulations put in place for spectators.

I am quite surprised more of her music has not entered the mainstream. Its not terrible, and I generally dislike female artists.
