I have an AX5 sitting next to me here, it has the black cast iron part between the front half and back half. It is an AX5, AX4 would look the same. It will only go into another Jeep with the 2.5 or the 2.8 V6.
  2. don't CUT THE ROLL BAR! you could re sell it and make your money back! Being in a rust free area, I cringe every time I see a truck like yours. I paid $250 for a running driving 87 , and $125 for a non running rust free 86 MJ. I'm just glad I don't live in Michigan anymore and have to deal with that like you do. Good luck on the bed search!
  3. If you know of anyone who currently sells anything other than a stock replacement cam, please let me know. I found one place a while back that had a listing, but they seem to be temporarily out of business... www.amotion.com They HAD listings for a selection of performance cams, and the website says that the catalog will be up soon, but it was last updated in April. I too want a cam for an upcoming 2.5 build, but have yet to find one. Mopar no longer carries a 2.5 cam either, and no dealers in the country show to have any on the shelf... I checked! Good luck!
  4. Just happened to have this lineup in the back parking lot at work this morning. The first being a 2011 Grand Cherokee, the second being my 1987 Comanche, the third being a 1970 Jeepster Comando. Just thought it was interesting!
  5. There is absolutely no relation between the AMC 2.5 and the Chrysler 2.5. Ive heard people talk about wanting to make the turbo from a Chry 2.5 work on an AMC 2.5, but have never seen one finished. Beyond that for forced induction it is all in what you can make of it yourself. There are a few performance items available though. Clifford performance makes an intake manifold that you could mount a 390cfm Holley 4 bbl carb to, or their own custom fuel injection setup, there are several companies that make headers including Clifford. Ive only found one place that lists a cam for the 2.5, but they have been "temporarily" closed for the last year and a half..... www.amotion.com they have (had) several different grinds available. Another thing for more power would be to remove the engine driven cooling fan and install an electric unit with a fan controller... I did this one myself. A cold air intake might help a little, and they say a throttle body spacer should help a little too, especially on the TBI models. A little port and polish, and a free flow or gutted cat converter and free flow muffler can only help too. There are those that say this will ruin the low end torque on this engine, but Ive noticed none of that myself. Its a great little engine as long as you don't expect too much out of it. Good luck with your truck, let us know what you end up doing!
  6. Even those that have swapped a 4.0 into an 86 that needed firewall mods, the mod was only with a hammer to move the firewall 1/2 inch in one spot.... no big deal. The hard part will be swapping in the 4.0 core support and radiator. But it can be and has been done. Good Luck.
  7. The auto used behind the 2.8 V6 in Cherokees and Comanches was the A904, basically a light duty version of the TF727, but it was used extensively through chrysler behind all its slant 6's and some of the smaller V8's. It is very buildable, and parts plentiful, and can be had with the 60 degree bellhousing pattern needed for that engine. Shift reprogrammers and shift kits are available that would take care of any weakness the OEM A904 might have (I just researched this the other day). Just for your info. Edit.... the A904 used by Jeep was mechaincally controlled.... no computers!

  9. New shocks usually come with new bolts for the bottom mount, but if they don't, the bolts are very common, and the parts store guy SHOULD be able to point you in the right direction for new ones. I'm thinking off the top of my head that the size might be 25-30mm long, 8mm thread with a 1.25 thread pitch. Good luck.
  10. I always find it amazing when driving by an auto dealer seeing a car that says "LOW MILAGE" on the windsheild, only to walk up and look at it to find it has 150,000 miles on it. WHAT GIVES?
  11. And if you know anything about the Mythbusters trys with RC on a fullsize vehicle, you know too how often they wreck them unintentionally, and how many problems they have keeping them going where they want them to. It amazing if you think about it, how many minute inputs it takes from a human driver to keep a car driving straight... thing is we don't think about it, and an RC can't do those minute inputs like a person can. And to think about how really dangerous it would be unless you have an abandoned airport to run it on. People don't do full size RC for a reason.... too easy to get killed or kill someone else. And when you do wreck it, you can't just flip it over with no damage and keep going.
  12. NOPE.... spring perches are different, wheel bolt pattern is different, and its low pinion. Sorry. One from a 98 and older grand will work though. You need to keep in mind your gear ratios need to match too when shopping for one. Good luck!
  13. I'm ready to do the same thing to mine, but my donor is from an 86....also external slave!
  14. I would check the e-brake switch first.... just unplug it, or mess with the contacts and see if it has any effect.
  15. ALL PREVIOUS RESPONSES ARE ASSUMING THAT THE WRANGLER IS A 4 CYLINDER ALSO. If the Wrangler is a 6 cylinder none of this will work. Just wanted you to be sure about this before going too far.
  16. As long as the 2.5 has its flywheel and clutch and pressure plate with it, it should work. Youll need a low pressure electric fuel pump to feed the weber, and somehow to tie in the ignition and starter, other than that Id say youll be mostly fine. Might need to tie some of the sensors into the original harness, like oil pressure and water temp, but if thats all you want to do, should work. But this job isnt far a novice mechanic..... you need a really good understanding of all these systems in order to make them work with each other in non stock form. I wish you luck.
  17. I’m a journeyman technician In an automotive shop I’m supposed to know the answers From the bottom to the top I should diagnose the problem With just a single look And if I fail to fix it You think that I’m a crook When I charge you for my labor You scream and moan And even call and threaten me Upon the telephone But technology in the auto Is advancing every year And for the systems I must know I simply have no peer I must be more electrician Than the man who wires your home For the wiring system in your car Outshines the Astrodome Then refrigeration systems That I’m supposed to know Have more gadgets than your home To make the darn thing go Electronics now have made the scene And more are coming yet The car models already exceed Your television set In hydraulics I have more to learn Than a specialist in pumps There are brakes and shock absorbers To help absorb the bumps Torque converters and transmissions With servos, valves and gears, With models by the hundreds Introduced in recent years Fuel systems of a hundred kinds I must adjust and meter Each far more complicated Than your furnace or water heater The principles of combustion I must know from A to Z And gear trains that will far exceed Most all machinery I’m in welding, I’m in plumbing For water, vacuum, oil, and fuel, Compared to me, a plumber Is a kid in grammar school There’s models, makes and systems Some seven hundred strong And new ones coming up each year To help the scheme along Now compare me to the doctor Whose prices make mine meager Yet folks revere his expertise Ever more impressed and eager The human body hasn’t changed In twenty thousand years And every model works the same From the ankles to the ears There’s years of school in his field And almost none in mine I’ve learned by practicing my trade And I read what I can find There’s new equipment and technology And medicines for sure But this is true in my field too As much or even more There’s lots of books he has to read His procedures to define But for every page in his field There’s twenty-five in mine There’s no comebacks and no wait You pay for what you get And come back and pay again If he hasn’t fixed it yet His mistakes are often buried While mine come back for free And he plays golf on Wednesday While my customers hassle me We spend millions of tax dollars Sending kids to medical school But if you ask for some in my field You’re treated like a fool Everybody has one body But no one has more But when it comes to autos You may have three or four But you’ll go right on complaining Of the way I run my show With no appreciation For the things I have to know And you’ll take your high school dropouts And you’ll shove them off to us And expect them to be experts While you rant and rave and fuss And when your car cannot be serviced I’ll not hang my head in shame So you’d best wake up America And find out who’s to blame.
  18. Our local John Deere dealer has a whole section in their store dedicated to Stihl saws and equipment.... and the prices were suprisingly reasonable considering. My buddy has a Stihl 028..... sure wish I had one. That saw will last forever!
  19. you say the motor was gone..... does that mean not there, or just "bad". If its just bad, re sell the 2.5, and find a camaro 3.1 or 3.4, swap all the 2.8 parts onto the camaro engine with the exception of having the flywheel nuetrally balanced by a machine shop, and drive it. Much easier than trying to make a 2.5 work in place of a 2.8. Any more questions feel free to ask!
  20. The 2.5 is injected and has an in tank pump, the 2.8 doesnt. Also to make the 2.5 work, you would need the entire engine harness, and dash harness, guages and computer for the 2.5 to make it run with its original setup. Also the exhaust downpipe to the converter.... the radiators for the 2.5 and the 2.8 are exactly the same... just a different fan shroud. I would say if you had a complete donor, to go for it, but if you just bought the engine and wanted to bolt it up and go, It looks like youre going to be dissappointed.
  21. To me, 100,000 miles would be low for an MJ!
  22. Lots of questions there. Welcome to the club. First... Ive never heard of anyone using F150 parts to lift an MJ or XJ. If it would work the ride would be soo rough you would want to pull it back off anyways. The Ftruck is much heavier than the MJ and the ride would be horrible. Engine to swap in.... The 4.3 will not work without a full drivetrain swap. You need to look for the 3.1, or 3.4 out of a Camaro. They have the correct bellhousing bolt pattern, and the block is almost identical to your original engine, so all accesories and mounts will swap right over to it and the engine will drop in. One thing though, the original 2.8 flywheel will have to be nuetrally balanced to work with the new motor... no big deal!
  23. You could also add the floor shift and floor e-brake too if you wanted. Would be a little more work to change out the steering column, and add the floor shifter cable mechanism, and brake, but I guess it would depend on how much work you would like to do. I don't think any cherokees came with column shift and foot brake, but I think maybe police versions might have, but I really don't know.... though good luck finding one of those.
  24. I wish I had a garage! :(
  25. I agree, thats the first thing I get for a trailer saftey chain setup. The load bearing type of of those loops like climbers use with the spring loaded closer.... or whatever theyre called. Available at any Lowes on the rope and chain area, or any hardware store for that matter.
