'86 MJ "Graham Cracker" Long Arm build
Pete M replied to Deleted's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
hoo boy, that truck is looking fantastic! I just might have to work on getting the guts to paint my topper. -
that makes sense. I've pulled a couple beds now and it's pretty easy, so I feel I should mention it just in case "perceived difficulty" was the reason.

that should make a marked improvement in drive-ability
-
are you going to paint the topper?
-
ouch. yeah, as much as these engines have an insane reliability reputation, bad things can still happen to 30 year old parts.

there's no end to the work that a 30 year old truck needs. -
so what's up with the engine? what turned out to be wrong?
-
that truck is going to be soooo different once you're done! tiny tires, running boards, bench and a 2 spoke wheel just scream boring old-man truck. I'm sure it can't wait to start its new life as a real head-turner.

Yeah, I spent around 700 and risked my life towing my 88 MJ from detroit to atlanta. then the next year we paid a shipper to haul my dad's Z-28 the same route and it was 600 and change.
-
it's only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Offer it up and if no one bites, try fixing it.
-
if it's from a private page, it may not show up? I usually save the image and upload them directly to the CC. that way we get to keep a copy.

Doesn't have to be your MJ, but what's your favorite "useful" mod. I'm a big fan of the 3/4" plywood I bolted to the rear wall in the cab of my old 88. I can easily attach all sorts of things to it now, for example the fire extinguisher and first aid kit. no pics of it though. I covered it with speakerbox fabric so it really doesn't look much different than the normal rear panel. just use your imagination

holy crap that is looking goooooood...

89 comanche pioneer 2wdrive Death wobble
Pete M replied to Jrwhite3230's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
oh, and look for a crack in the frame right between the steering box an the track bar. It's happened on several MJs. be incredibly careful if you resort to tightening the steering box itself. If you over-do it, you can ruin it. -
this one was harder to find on my own rigs since I've not really ever built an MJ for power or speed. But I'll go with the axle gear upgrades. dang those 3.07s suuuuuuck. 3.07 to 3.55 was my first experience what what a regear could do. man did it put a smile on my face. I would have done 4.10s but I didn't know better yet. Plus the dana 35 blew up and so I had just thrown a ton of money at a 44 with 3.55s so it was doubtful I would have had money for a gear change on top of that. any who... gears for the win!

doesn't necessarily need to be a mod on your particular truck. for some reason that I can't fully explain, I really like the old school racer backs. They don't have any real function, but I like them enough I traded a black interior for one. and yes, I'll add in the pic of mine in a couple weeks once I dig the truck out of the barn.

well, I'll see you next week! we can chat then

can you also post in Tech? it gets a lot more eyeballs than here
