I voted for Taos. I know nothing about the city, but anything in northern New Mexico just HAS to have like a billion places to wheel around it. I mean, Colorado is right there! :D And Moab is only 7 hours away!

Some 31s fit on stock 4x4 MJs if you stick with stock rims. Some rubbing on the control arms is possible at full turn.

The key is to get a feel for how long a 10lb bottle lasts. More than enough for a weekend for me, and I use the impact to swap tow tires and trail tires back and forth. I have a $10 compressor as backup. Not fast, but if I'm truly in a pinch, it does work.

The gold MJ was previously owned by Rick (xjs4ever) who let me tag along on one of his various Moab trips. He loved it like a son and was happy (that's a relative term, he let it go very reluctantly) to see that he could sell it to a fellow MJ enthusiast. I assure you that it took more than just a handful of money to take over the reigns of the Varmint. :D Here's Rick: My truck on the same trip. It's reeeeeally hard to take a bad picture in Moab. :D And no, that's not me. That's my co-pilot Carly. :D

Amen to that! I got my hands on a used lockright to replace the minispool in my front Dana 44. Why not just go hydro-assist? I'm thinking I can do mine for about $100. You could use BrettM's setup and come in under $100 (for the parts). I know you'd need to spend some money to get everything welded... Hydro assist may help with turning the front tires when they bind (which happens a LOT when the traction is good), but it won't help with the fact that even when I get the tires turned, the truck still wants to go straight in the sloppier stuff. I hate doing 3 or 5 point turns. An automatic drop-in locker costs under $300 (used are even cheaper) and when you shift into 2wd, the locker lets go and you can turn no-problemo. Plus, don't forget that retaining the CAD means that you're retaining the little 260 U-joints (unless you go get 95 YJ shafts which would have 297s and the CAD). I personally would get a used locker and upgrade to 297/760 joints and shafts.

Yeah, don't foget about the output shaft length too. There were seemingly random changes over the years.

Probably because it's a buttload of work and if you're going to put that much work into it, you might as well upgrade the axle. Or it could be that a leaf conversion usually ends up in a ton of lift and the Dana 30 was never designed to handle 35"+ tires.

By the way, your pictures suck because the camera is moving slightly as the exposure is happening (and the exposure time is longer due to the fact that you're taking them inside where there is lesss light). Try setting the camera on something to steady it and the picture will be sharper.

What exactly are you parting out? The body is the only thing of any real value. Everything else is available from the gazillions of XJs out there. Sell the thing whole. :brows:

Used is where it's at. I just picked up 4 33" trxus for $75 each, rims included. :D

If someone puts forth the effort to sign up, it's hard to stop them. It's no biggie though, I just delete them. I left this particular post though because the responses are amusing (though I eliminated the link).

Roofing tar also takes FOREVER to even begin to harden. What a mess! :( Don't be so sure you don't have a leak somewhere. When I pulled the carpet from my latest MJ, the stench was unbearable, but very similar to the smell that came from my first MJ. I think it's just the smell of the underpadding after it's been wet for months or even years.

So far I'm keeping mine red. Hides the rust better. :D

Measurements from the ground to the fender won't be on much help since the tires will likely be of different sizes between different trucks. Measurements from the center of the wheel to the fender would be more helpful. :D
