Depends on which seals are leaking. The rear main seal requires dropping the oil pan (and use of a torque wrench) and is generally a very messy and sometimes frustrating procedure. Changing the valve cover is pretty straight forward, but there are no guarantees when screwing around with 15 year old gaskets. I haven't done the oil filter O-rings yet.

Unfortunately, you can't remove the tranny from the bellhousing without removing the bellhousing from the engine. The bolts are only accessible from inside the bellhousing.

My Co2 tank has a non-adjustible 100psi regulator and no guages. :D It works great and was pretty darn cheap.

It is also theoretically possible that 86 (maybe even early 87) MJs could have the T-4.

They are at the top of the bellhousing.

The 2.8 was 86 only, so you'd better verify what exactly it is for sale. Take a small magnet with you to check that fresh paint for hidden bondo. It may look nice now, but will it still look nice a year from now?

sounds exaclt like my mom's 95 XJ... except its a auto 2wd 4.0 with 198k on it and it leaks like a seive. While the engines are certainly capable of 200k+ (all 3 of mine are), alas the seals are not.

Could have been swapped. :hmm:

E-12. I highly recommend replacing them with long studs. They help with putting the trans back in. :D

I voted for Taos. I know nothing about the city, but anything in northern New Mexico just HAS to have like a billion places to wheel around it. I mean, Colorado is right there! :D And Moab is only 7 hours away!

Some 31s fit on stock 4x4 MJs if you stick with stock rims. Some rubbing on the control arms is possible at full turn.

The key is to get a feel for how long a 10lb bottle lasts. More than enough for a weekend for me, and I use the impact to swap tow tires and trail tires back and forth. I have a $10 compressor as backup. Not fast, but if I'm truly in a pinch, it does work.

And I've wheeled with that Comanche! :D (Though not on that particular trip, nor with it's current owner.) :hmm: I can see that first pic, though it took a few seconds to load. The gold MJ was previously owned by Rick (xjs4ever) who let me tag along on one of his various Moab trips. He loved it like a son and was happy (that's a relative term, he let it go very reluctantly) to see that he could sell it to a fellow MJ enthusiast. I assure you that it took more than just a handful of money to take over the reigns of the Varmint. :D Here's Rick: My truck on the same trip.
