If the emblem has raised letters, clean it up well then spray the whole face with a light coat of rattle can satin black. Before it dries, you use a parer towel damp with mineral spirits and lightly rub off the paint from the letter face. Repeat for a second coat. When completely dry, coat all with poly clearcoat to seal it. The emblem below was machined aluminum with no paint when I purchased it. I've also done the Comanche emblems the same way. Works well when you take your time.

A few years ago in a local muffler shop just up the road from you, I had a new 2.5 exhaust system installed from the header collector pipe all the way back for a bit less than $200. This included a stainless glasspack to replace the cat, new Walker performance muffler w. one inlet / two outlets, and dual tailpipes exiting under the rear bumper. With new hangers and all welded. Would probably be less than $300 today. So yes, check with your local shop.

Your 1988 had a non c-clip axle originally; they switched to c-clip D35s in 1990. I don't see the c-clip channel on the splined end of your axle as below either, so you did not have a c-clip D35.

I've been considering one of these kits also. Jeepman, did your transmission issues start after you installed the kit? How did it actually affect the shifting?
