  1. some of the older 258 cj motors had a plastic cover on them.they were crack prone and i don't know if they would interchage with a 4.0 or not.
  2. i would fix the gauges and see what i'm really getting.my mj with 160k 4.0 and a/t gets about 16mpg.it didn't get much better than that when it was new.my gas gauge when i fill it up takes 100-125 miles before it moves but is accurate when it hits empty.you can't trust the gauges in these trucks.mine is a bad sending unit.
  3. i got the hesco pump as well.expensive but a very nice piece.
  4. i've used the right stuff sealant with alot of success.it is alittle expensive but it's still cheaper than a $35 valve cover gasket and you can make several gaskets with it for less than $20 a tube depending on where you get it.advance and federated auto parts both carry it.
  5. i did this swap as well.it has all but eliminated my blowby in the breather box.the downside is that i'll have to oil my k&n filter now instead of the engine doing it for me.i think i spent about $20 for a cover and used a fitting i had in my tool box and a can of therightstuff sealant.money well spent.
  6. i bypassed mine as well.after the 3rd valve went out in 10 years i got tired of it.i also used the newer cherokee hoses.i have more heat now than ever and no more control valves to worry about.like everyone says all the valve does is cut water flow off when the a/c is on but my a/c died years ago so it doesn't matter to me anyway.
  7. mine has only 160k.i got it from my grandmother who bought it with only 7k miles on it.the drivetrain is all original.it doesn't run as good as it did 21 years ago but i would take it anywhere.i feel sure it'll make it to 200k.
  8. my 88 did this as well.when i upgraded to a cherokee tach style cluster my volt gauge reads much higher.it's still not 100% accurate but it's alot closer.
  9. thanks.actually i would need the 34 or 35 tooth as i have factory 3.55s.i think i'll order both gears to be on the safe side.once again, thanks guys.
  10. my 88mj came with stock 215s and i went to 235s.i would like to change the gear to make the speedo right.does anybody know the # of teeth that came stock?it has a 4.0 /a/t.i figure 1 tooth less would make it right.i'd like to be able to order one without taking mine apart first.
  11. in va. there is a 0 deflection in ball joints for most vehicles.the exceptions are listed in our state rule book.when i check them for balljoints if they have only a few thousands of movement i let it go but do tell the customer that in the near future they'll have to be replaced.we ususally use spicer parts in our shop and it's odd to see ones with play with that little time having gone buy.you could try the old grease them right before you take it and get it inspected trick to try and tighten them up first.
  12. i only use mopar sensors on my truck.when i worked at the jeep/dodge dealership 7 years ago i used my employee discount and replaced every sensor except the knock sensor on my truck.i have seen several different crank sensors fail or not work at all from the aftermarket.i to this day still use mopar plug wires because they're not that expensive and are better than anything in the parts store.
  13. my 88 has the 23.5 gallon tank as well.the smaller tanks used 2 straps to hold it up where the bigger used 3 straps.funny thing is that before i replaced my tank is when the gas light came on it would have 4-5 gallons left.after i replaced the tank it comes on when there is only 1-2 gallons left.
  14. is the hesco waterpump worth the money?i replaced my w/p with a mopar one about 10 years ago when i worked at the jeep/dodge dealership and it just noticed started to leak when i was replacing my belt and alternator and had thought about upgrading as well.i have also done the closed to open conversion as well except i removed the heater control valve as well.i have never used and hesco pieces and was wondering if it's worth the money.if it is i may get one for the g/f's 95 grand as well.
  15. i've did mine twice.the first lasted 4 years and i just replaced it again 3 months ago.
  16. it's common for 2.5 and 4.0 heads to crack there.
  17. i am upgrading my cluster to one with a tach and will be taking my gauge cluster out.it has gauges but no tach.let me know if your interested in it.i'll let it go pretty cheap.
  18. man that truck looks just like mine.same color and pioneer package as well.i also inherited mine from my grandmother 10 years ago as she bought it with only 8k miles on the clock.it's starting to get a little rust above the rear fender flares but it has served me faithfully for 10 years and i wouldn't trade it for the world.good luck with your project.
  19. i'm also interested in this as well.
  20. i think i'm going to try the pcv swap mentioned in the last post unless someone can find the tj write up.
  21. i was also wondering about changing mine to a pcv system or something better than the old ccv system.i remember reading somewhere about how to convert to pcv but can't remember where i read it.does anybody else know where i could find this?maybe we could make this a sticky.
