  1. Ditto.
  2. Check your control arm bushings. My lower control arm bushings were all cracked and destroyed only after 80k and about 5 years old. They were causing horrible death wobble above 60mph, but only after I hit a rough patch in the road or bump. Replaced with adjustable control arms since I was planning a larger lift in the near future. Fixed my problem. Your bushings are probably shot all to hell after 20 years.
  3. Kinda neat but definately british. I'm partial to a couple british cars such as a Triumph but I'd pass on this one. I'd much rather have a Willys/GPW or M-38. To each his own I guess. :D
  4. Sorry to hear about your troubles. So they would sell you another engine but only with your remaining 8 month warranty? What kind of business only warranties their engine for 8 months? Goes to show you they don't have faifth in their own work. If I was in your place, I tell them to ship back my original motor at their cost and to stick the other engine where the sun don't shine. If you get your original back, I'd look at getting everything rebuilt and build a stroker
  5. I climbed Mount St Helens a few years back. I was dead tired by the time I reached the top but the view was well worth it. About half way up where it gets really rocky, you tend to get mobbed by squirrels. They obviously are hand fed because they will try to climb up your pants. :D
  6. So today was one of those boring Sundays and for some strange reason I was craving soft pretzels. Now I usually go by "jack of all trades, master of none" which isn't completely true. My real whiz is in computers / networks but I also enjoy to turn wrenches (obviously) :D I can also do basic house stuff, floors, electric, simple plumbing etc...Long story short my hands are usually pretty decent at creating things like computers, closely spaced .45 holes in paper at 25 yards :brows: , or miscellaneous little projects. Apparently, my hands aren't that great at making pretzels :rotf: I'd roll the stupid things out and they would almost instantly "self-roll" into a ball again. What a PITA but they sure do taste good. You can tell which one was my first attempt, top left corner. :fs2:
  7. I remember reading a technical thread somewhere a while back that had a response from a tech working for New Venture. He said a full synthetic 5w30 oil could be substitued for the NV-3550, the 5speed that came with newer wranglers and cherokees. Tried it once in our 2000 TJ when local stores ran out of redline and other M/T synthetics. Seemed to work just fine, didn't notice any difference in shifting or operation.
  8. I use mostly Redline synthetics for my driveline. Royal Purple is really good stuff too. I would just change the fluid once with a good synthetic, I doubt using regular gear oil is going to do much of anything. If your transmission is acting up it is probably just showing it's age and 183k of wear. Might want to keep a rebuild in mind for the future. I use Redline MTL for all my jeep manual transmissions.
  9. DakineJ, which company where you with? I was with 6th Engineers for some time at H&S Co. Small world huh? :D
  10. I think $800 would be a good price if it was done right. The real trick to getting a quality rebuilt transmission is to find one of those grizzly "old guys" that have their shop out in the country somewhere. :D One guy nearby does great work and rebuilds nothing but jeep transmissions and axles.
  11. CJ's use the same style foot operated e-brake. They are also in short supply though you can occasionally pick one up on ebay. Few years back I got a remanufactered unit for $5 due to no bids. Seller came through with completion of the sale. Hats off to people like that.
  12. That just screams "please mr. officer, come over here and look for my disabled parking permit". People park in those spots all the time here in town with no permits. Rather ballsy and quite annoying. For some people an extra 10 feet I guess is too much.
  13. Double check and make sure that bolt isn't stainless steel or look like it is about to fail. When I was restoring my CJ7, I replaced the old bolt which had almost no thread left with a new bolt that came with a stainless steel fastener kit. Big mistake. The heat from the engine block ruined the bolt which I found out the hard way. Day after putting in a new carb and HEI distributor I took it out for a spin. Pulled over to adjust the timing a bit and when I was loosening the bolt the head twisted right off. I didn't even have it completely tightened down either since I was constantly adjusting it. Luckily I was close to home but had to have it towed because I couldn't get the broken thread out. 50 cent POS bolt cost me $50 tow. :fs1:
  14. Got about 30 seconds into the video and I had to close it. What a bunch of idiots...someone needs to put that poor jeep out of it's misery.
  15. I grew up in a city with a population of 250 and we had 0 officers. Hell, we would be lucky to see a county car once a month. Coming from a law enforcement background I'm having a hard time reading this. At first I thought this was a joke....what a disgrace to those of us that really work hard to serve and protect. :fs1:
  16. Swapping the hard drive is actually fairly easy. It isn't complicated at all and any 2.5" IDE drive will work. I agree with you about wiping everything and starting new. Assuming the copy of Windows XP is a legit legal copy, you can re-use the serial / cd key to re-install a new copy. Either buy a "cd only" copy of Windows XP [home / pro] (which ever version you have), or download a copy. You can retrieve your existing serial / cd-key by using the software below. http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ Again, this is assuming the existing copy is legit. If not, you might be better off (legally) to purchase a retail copy, or go with a free opensource OS like linux. Probably more than you want to deal with. :D
  17. There won't be any programming unless you are talking about the configuration. (tcip/ip settings, channel, name, security settings, etc..) If you aren't comfortable taking the laptop apart to make the ebay kit work, I'd just look at an aftermarket card with a small or internal antenna. Something like below http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WPC54G
  18. If you can get that wireless card off of ebay (the one you linked) that would be a good setup. Cisco doesn't make cheap products.
  19. Nice to see a "manly" garage that is organized and clean........compared to one that is filled to the brim with the wifes priceless crap. :rotf: did I just actually post that?
  20. I have all kinds of field experience using that exact model. We had a number of CF-28's while I was in Iraq back in 2003. They are decent laptops and are TOUGH but they are so well built & enlosed they don't operate well in hot environments. (Go ahead and throw it on the ground, :brows: j/k)They aren't ventilated very well and overheat pretty quickly in 90+ weather. We didn't use Wi-fi so I don't know what to tell you there. For $50 you got a heck of a deal. Personally, I'd remove Windows XP since that laptop was designed to work on Windows 2000. 800mhz and 248mb of ram is pretty low specs for running XP. If you are going to intall any type of mapping software I would definately upgrade the RAM, 1GB would be preferrable. If you decide to buy an aftermarket Wi-fi card, go with a PCMCIA version. USB version will do nothing but suck what little cpu power you have on that.
  21. I'd take a manual transmission over an automatic anyday regardless of the vehicle. I also look at it this way: I do my own maintenance and spend extra money for high quality synthetic oil for my driveline. Manual transmission = ~ 2 qts Auto transmission = ~ 8 qts :D
  22. I live right smack between the state capital and Portland. I see comanches all the time wether I'm in the city or country. Most of them I see however are usually in fairly bad shape. I suspect a lot of people own them and could care less that it is a jeep. (let a lone a rare jeep) :(
  23. Sounds like your Windows installation if FUBAR. At this point I would go with the other suggestions and just start from scratch. Best way to fix ANY Windows installation. format c: :D I would also test your RAM to be on the safe side. On multiple occasions I've encountered bad RAM when I thought the problem was a corrrupted windows installation. Free memory test software is available below. http://www.memtest.org/
  24. 87Comanche, run SpyBot Search & Destroy if you haven't already. It will detect and remove any malicious BHO (Browser Helper Objects) that have taken control of your IE toolbars. As Pete mentioned, Firefox / Mozilla is a great way to avoid a lot problems to begin with. I use both IE and FireFox, but anything that deals with personal account information, online ordering, credit card numbers, banking, etc..I leave to FireFox.
  25. I remember at one point WalMart never checked reciepts. Fry's Electronics does this too which is annoying and by the way completely illegal. (I'm not a lawyer but have law enforcement experience) A business attempting to protect it's inventory and sales through cameras and instore security is one thing but searching your person or belongings is ridiculous. They can ask to see your receiept, and you can voluntarily give it to them, but that CANNOT search you or your property. Walmart never checks my receipt anyways, but Fry's does. Just walk out, they can't do anything, worst case is they say "have a nice day" which they have done before. ;) Another reason why I buy my electronics and software online.
