Yes, all Dana 30's in an XJ or MJ were high pinion before 2000. ZJ's and WJ's all have low pinions D30's. If you're not going to run ginormous tires, the D30 will hold up fine. The CAD HP D30's are a little stronger in the axle tubes due to the extra mass of cast iron around where the CAD is. I'd suggest Chromoly one piece shaft replacement in the CAD 30...

Lots Of Questions On 1986 Mj
onlyinajeep726 replied to SBpunk's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't believe the transfer case from the Torque Flite tranny will work on a newer AW4... Besides, the NP207 is okay, but a 231 is much more favorable. Also, if you're swapping everything from a donor XJ, you will need one that is 4WD because the 2WD AW4 and 4WD AW4 are different. On an '86, you will likely have to smash the firewall back some and the headlight buckets will have to be modified to accommodate the 4.0L radiator (which means cutting, welding and fabricating brackets to hold the rad in place). The tranny cross member will also have to be custom bolted on because the '86 wasn't pre-drilled or pre-studded with places to bolt to for the different drivetrain packages from '87+. The wiring harness from the XJ will have to be swapped to the MJ. Since the one in question is a 2.8L, you'll have to find an MJ fuel sending unit or fabricate an external one to work. There's a lot of information out there on the web for this kind of swap, so I'd highly suggest doing your homework before you start. I did a 4.0L/AX15e swap on my '86 to replace the 2.5L/AX4 I had. If you decide to pursue this, here's some links to my build with lots of pictures. Naturally, there will some differences but good luck you to sir. http://comancheclub.com/topic/39492-the-truly-custom-86-mj-custom/?do=findComment&comment=397509 http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/86-comanche-dd-159524/index3/#post2533898 -
Factory Skid Plate
onlyinajeep726 replied to TheDirtyJeep401's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, it does. -
That is strange.... Go back and grab a pic of the diagram and the VIN! I want to know more. To be sure no one was stupid enough to swap in a 2.8L and all associated work into something that had the legendary 4.0L...

The one for an automatic is even cheaper... Works the same, just an extra plug. -
No Start Without Using Starting Fluid

Awesome! Glad it's fixed. -
I have one that is 31" compressed... It's from my donor XJ that had the AW4. I've already attempted to use it but it's too long. Just for comparison, the same length drive shaft is on my XJ with 4 inches of lift and it's barely extended out any further than the stock spot. I also have the skinnier one like you have at the bottom of your picture and that was the MJ's original one from the 2.5L/AX4 combo. Thanks for trying though. My search continues on that front.

Right now, I'm running the stock sized 225/70R15's. When I bought the truck back in January, the PO had just recently put new tires on it so I can't justify changing them out any time soon (plus the money isn't there lol). With 2" of lift, they don't look tiny or funny. Eventually, I will probably go to 30" x 9.5"'s. I've got a set of turbine rims that I will one day refinish and that'll likely be when I make that step up.

Alright, let me know. $300?! They better be threaded with gold fiber and embedded with diamonds for that kind of mula... lol

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the MJ! Lots of useful info here and helpful members. You're at the right place.

You could clean up and paint your existing trim with Krylon Fusion for Plastics. Get a good adhesion promoter like Dupli-Color's. That's what I'm currently doing right now.

Thanks! Still got a lot more to do. But you know how these things are... never ending. For a 2" lift I used coil spacers and Chevy lowering shackles. The shackles netted me the two inches I sought after, but the coil spacers rest on top of worn factory 4.0L springs from my '88 XJ. Realistically the front only went up about 3/4" inch, so it's got a bit of rake to it. Plan to level it out with either 2" lift coils or low mileage V8 ZJ coils + the spacers. Then it'll be a matter of new shocks.

Yes, it will start and run without the TPS, but like PFC said, it's not recommended and the ECU needs to know the position of the throttle for optimum performance and MPG. Otherwise, it has to rely on the O2 sensor and MAP sensor to sort everything out...

Manifold bolts may need tightening. I know that sounds crazy, but check this out: http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/154-1005-jeep-cherokee-xj-problems-and-fixes/

A Copy Of The Parking Brake Recall?
onlyinajeep726 replied to XJs4Ever's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well this has turned into quite a messy thread... I thought this was supposed to be a friendly forum to help one another... Anyway, since there's so much debate on something no one here has tested, let me ride up to my local stealership sometime in the coming weeks and test out how far I get. I'll let you guys know how it goes so we can get back to the main point of this thread. Until then, can everybody just get along? This seems hardly worth the back and forth $#!&. -
A Copy Of The Parking Brake Recall?
onlyinajeep726 replied to XJs4Ever's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, I still plan to get my issue resolved. I have email records (as I've presented here in previous posts) that show where the Chrysler Customer Service rep stated I had open safety recalls on my model. That being said, I realize that parts may not be available anymore and will cross that bridge when I get to it. But, no matter what, something will get done about it, if I have to drag this out for another 28 years... I'd be fine with a retrofit of another parking brake assembly so long as the end result is functional and safe. -

Bad tach in the cluster you got. Get another one. This is all assuming the SunPro one was reading correctly before all this. -
