Rear Main Seal Repair gone bad
mvusse replied to robfg67's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If oil is leaking out of the starter, you have to find out how that oil is getting INTO the starter, as there isn't supposed to be any. Could it be leaking onto the starter from the oil filter bracket? -
Filling coolant in a closed system
mvusse replied to james750's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have filled mine through the upper hose a number of times now. I take the cap off the expansion bottle, and fill through the upper radiator hose until the bottle is about 3/4 full, then hook the hose back up to the thermostat housing. Never had a problem doing it this way yet, and have never needed to burp it. -
I was going to ask the same question, due to the same squealing, on the same off road trip. You beat me to it. Before lunch I got pebbles stuck between the dust shield and rotor on the driver's side, and the passenger side dust shield itself had gotten bent up against the rotor. Pried them away from the rotors and dropped out the rocks and I was good again. Within 15 minutes back on the trail the squeal was back. This time the passenger side had pebbles stuck in there and the driver's side the shield itself was touching. I intend for them to be gone before weekend is over.

Couldn't remember, so I just walked to the street corner to take a look. $2.18 and frikkin cold outside.

Mine has just a stock muffler, then a glass pack to make it to the next hanger, then a downturn in front of the axle. Got some deep resonating rumble at just above idle (my daughter says it sounds like a stereo), then quiets down with more throttle.

About 6", maybe. I believe they are still SUA. At least the black one is.

Yeah, 4 MJs, 4 XJs and a TJ. We didn't outnumber, but we weren't outnumbered either.

A fresh rebuilt will burn oil for the first few hundred miles until everything is seated properly. That will cause smoke out the tail pipe. The manifold area leak I can't help with.

Not my taste, but I can see how a 16 year old can feel proud to have personalized his 20 year old truck like no other.

I'm glad you managed to make it home. I saw some of your troubles yesterday afternoon, and heard some more last night. That water pump sounded awful. Thanks for the tow out of the hole on those mud flats, though. And to the OP: Sorry about the hi-jack.

On a 400 mile trip today (640 km) I averaged a touch over 24mpg (60-65mph the whole way, ~100km/h). I have a 23.5 gallon tank in my lwb Comanche, so that would be 24x23.5=564 miles, or 902 km on one tank of gas. I'm pretty confident of the 24mpg, because I got the same to within less than 1 mpg on the same trip back in July.

30 minute fix for a soft break pedal and lack of e-brake
mvusse replied to BPB's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The two wheels are mirror image. One is left hand thread, one is right hand thread. So while counter-clockwise will press the shoes outward on the one wheel, on the other wheel is will be clockwise. But a screwdriver through the access hole is easier indeed. -
I run 4.5" with adjustable short arms in the stock brackets. The ride is a little harder (stiffer might be a better word) than stock, but not bad. On a lwb, a SYE is not needed for 4.5". Dunno about swb.

On the way home from Badlands I paid $2.19 at exit 66 off I74. 6 hours or so later I filled up again for $2.29 at home (300 feet from my house). 19 mpg to badlands following my buddy at 70-75mph 24 mpg on the way home between 60-65mph. Less breaks, took the same amount of time :D The lift does not seem to have affected mileage at all.

If you look between the bottom of the truck and the ground, it actually sits level. The front wheel openings just go up higher (way higher) into the fender.

All I know is I miss my shop. I used to have a double attached garage (20x24) and a 24x36 pole building in the backyard with a double garage opening toward the alley behind my house. Then the wife left me and I had no hope of making the mortgage payments on my own. Fast forward 3 years and I live in a 98 year old 2 storey house on a single lot that I have been remodelling for 2 years now. It is in town, close to school and walking distance to my daughter's friends. Those were all the requirements I had, but man do I miss my garages. After she's moved out I plan to sell this place and buy some land out of town. Start by building a 24x36 buckeye barn. Downstairs will be 3 stall garage with radiant floor heating, upstairs will be living space. If that can't happen, plan B is to build a triple garage in my backyard.

Should my overflow tank be "boiling"

My bottle was cracked; the plastic seems to get a little brittle after 21 years. I ordered one of Ebay, and it's worked fine for me so far. -
The older couple with the white one has BLACK buckets. :nanner:

On my truck, before the lift, unloaded the valve was horizontal, and the more weight I put in the back, the further the arm on the valve moved up. I zip tied it about 60 degrees up and every time I hit the brakes the rears locked up. I now have it a little above level and the front and rear lock up at about the same time with the cap on the back and maybe 200 pounds of weight in it. Need to get a longer rod so I can hook it up properly again.

Well, my Rock Krawler adjustable ucas were on the back porch (thanks MO) when I came home from work yesterday, but I spent the rest of the afternoon in a Benadryl induced coma. Don't you just hate allergies? Tonight I'm cleaning and doing laundry, tomorrow night I'm packing, so they will not go on until after the Fall Crawl  The idler pulley from Autozone did not fit, but luckily TSC had a bearing (6203) to replace the old one. Got lucky, though, as officially a 6203 bearing is 17mmx40mmx12mm, but there are hybrids floating around that are 5/8"x40mmx12mm. 5/8" is less than 16mm, not 17mm. Pictures next week.

That's not a "woops". That's an opportunity to upgrade to a 44.

I have never heard of a thrown rod having been caused by the engine overheating. Now a blown head gasket would be a different matter. The only time I've experienced a thrown rod (as a passenger) was a Chevy K20 running 100mph/160km/h for 3 hours straight (4 am in Saskatchewan, Canada). And the temp gauge ran a perfect 190-210 the whole time. It came right out the bottom of the oil pan. The problem there was that a 15 year old 350 is not meant to rev 3500 rpm for 3 hours straight (4200 was red line). The owner was not very happy when he found out.
