You're running rich. Start by replacing the air filter, O2 sensor and coolant temperature sensor. The one for the computer, not the one for the dash gauge. Oil change and new spark plugs can't hurt.

Weld it. Not all states allow a riveted floor. -
Thanks. Grinder, chisel and hammer made quick work of it. Wheel is back together!

Well, went to install new driver side axle, ABS axle I took off a 93 Grand Cherokee. Turns out ABS axles do not fit on 89 and older hubs as the ABS sensor ring interferes with the hub. Is it possible to press the ABS ring off the axle? If it is, would I probably still foobar the axle trying to do so? And why are the 90 and newer hubs $100 when the 89 and older are only $70?

I had the clips off, and had the one cap completely out of the knuckle. But it wouldn't come off the cross. Clamped the cap in the vice, rotated the axkle until the cross was up against, then tried to rotate the axle more, forcing the cross to come with it. I could not budge it. Either the cap twisted out of the vice, or (with the vice tightened down more) I was hanging feet of the ground and still not breaking loose. 3 foot axle shaft x 200 pounds is 600 foot pounds of torque and not breaking loose. I then tapped the cap back in and through to pop the other side out of the ear, same problem. I got them out now, though. Cut the seals off and sprayed PB Blaster in there repeatedly and tapping with a hammer. Joint is out, can of PB Blaster is about empty. I have removed 4 u joints from Jeep axle shafts before, and never had this problem. Usually the problem is the caps not wanting to come out of the knuckle very easily. It's bedtime now.

Found a local store that sells Spicer u joints and has a bunch of 5-760x's in stock. Got one installed in the new driver side shaft, having a bit of a problem getting old joint out of passenger shaft: 2 caps are so badly rust welded onto the cross I can not break them loose even with 3 feet of leverage on the end of the axle. Currently soaking in PB Blaster. If they still won't come loose tomorrow I'll let the whole thing soak in a tub of transmission fluid for a few days.

Nothing wrong with spider bots, like Google or Yahoo. They just index the info on the site.

I consider myself stuck if my vehicle can not get out of wherever it is under it's own power without outside help and without a winch.

Posi-trak is a registered trademark by Eaton for their clutch based limited slip differential used in GM cars only.

I could pop the dash bezel off my 94 XJ to triple check tomorrow.

He most have broken a shaft before, as CV shafts were not stock in Comanches. They belong in Grand Cherokees, but are a direct replacement fit. And blown spider gears? I've never seen that. I have always had the ring and pinion gear fail before the spiders. -
OH, I KNOW, I KNOW! Camjeep3, the OP. :rotf:

Surface Prep, Acetone or Denatured Alcohol?
mvusse replied to mknherhappy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I used the scotch brite pads, or 330 grit paper on an orbital sander. -
Those are stock leafs. They have been re-arched at some point in the past. Going by factory specs they ride 1" higher than stock 4wd leafs, 2" higher than 2wd leafs. I'm going to play with it tomorrow.

After reading this thread I checked it out for myself. No slowness noticed. Firefox 3.07 under Linux on a 1.5Ghz Celeron M lap top, 2 GB RAM.

Yeah, for $45 plus $10 shipping. $55 for one Spicer U joint is about twice what I'm willing to pay.
-
Who all here uses 5-760x u-joints, and where did you buy them? Autozone doesn't carry Spicer, Advance doesn't carry Spicer, can't find them on NAPA's web site, but will check the store on Monday. And then there are two independent stores here, Ohio Light Truck Parts, and Dover Brake. If they don't have it it will have to be mail order.

Advance Auto Parts has new replacement sockets in the help section. They are listed as being for a Ford, but they work. The color coding on the wires is reversed, though. -

I have always used the thinner/reducer recommended for the paint I was spraying.
